iconic 60s comedy whodunit
6 August 2022
This movie is awesome. It keeps a fun energy all the way through and clouseau is hilarious and iconic. All the little quips and gags keep you invested and the spookier tone in the third act really gives you fun murderer mystery vibes. Just a super fun 60s detective movie.

awesome based chick flick
20 July 2022
Legally blonde is just a great movie. Not just because it's funny, because it's girly, because it has good drama and iconic characters...legally blonde is also great because of what it stands for.

Hyper-femininity is often mocked or criticized. Pink sparkly stuff is BAD, it's GIRLY, it's a STEREOTYPE. And many stories of girls becoming strong or empowered involves them becoming more masc/androgynous or abandoning girly stuff. But legally blonde argues that femininity and strength/dignity aren't mutually exclusive. You can be a bombass powerful lawyer AND wear cutesy dresses. You can be a harvard student AND like spas, doing your hair, makeup, etc. Power and traditionally feminine things can go hand in hand. And I like that idea.

goofy, energetic and self-aware
20 July 2022
I usually have very very low expectations for these random action comedy movies that come out all the time. They're usually incredibly cringey, dull, unfunny or forgettable. But I was delighted to discover that this movie is not one of those.

Really the only way to go about creating a sequel to Jumanji starring Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black is not to take yourself seriously. This movie only works because the entire time it is marveling at how stupid and over-the-top it is. They make fun of themselves, they mock the plot itself at points, and nothing in the story is taken too seriously. So you're both laughing AT the movie and WITH the movie. It knows that its own existence is pretty dumb. And that's how it's able to be fun instead of cringey!

Also, the action is pretty good. Everything is exciting and fun and, like I said, very self-aware. The comedy is also actually pretty good for what you'd usually expect in these kinds of movies. Lots of the jokes were genuinely funny and the way all the actors made fun of themselves and hammed it up was pretty entertaining.

So yes! Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a success in my book. I have lots of respect for it.

cozy and entertaining
13 June 2022
I watch this all the time actually. It's very cute. I love the suspense and the stakes that slowly grow over time. I also love all the different places david goes and the antics he gets into, it all feels immersive and pacific-northwesty.

If I have any criticism, it's a little boring sometimes since the plot is a bit thin and they have to pad time by weaving in random clips of military jargon in the control center thingy. That and I wish the romance was just a bit more developed or themed, even though the two of them are very cute together.

But overall it's a fun time and the whole falken/joshua storyline is so cute. Also matthew broderick is a total babe in this movie, it is SO MUCH FUN to watch just for him :)

Leap Year (2010)

I really wish I liked it
13 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Every time I come back to this movie I remember it better than it is.

The plot itself has really good potential: a girl gets stuck in the middle of rural Ireland and has to enlist the help of a local to get her to her destination, but the two fall in love along the way. The problem is this movie just fails to be romantic and enjoyable.

First off this movie is just SO CRINGEY. All the chemistry and jokes are just awkward things happening to the main character instead of fun, romantic things. You just run out of steam when every single scene is another embarrassing moment we're supposed to find cute or funny.

Second, the characters have no good romantic chemistry. They have really good chemistry as regular characters bantering in a non-romantic sense, but they clearly aren't meant for each other. They don't get along well and they have completely different interests/lifestyles and so their romance and their decision to get married at the end just doesn't make sense.

Along with that, her fiancé didn't deserve to get dumped like that! They may not be a power couple but he's a generally nice person and for her to just ditch him for mr. Ireland on the spot is pretty rude. AND in all honesty the two of them were better suited for each other than her and declan (is that his name?).

So I really wish I could speak fondly of leap year but it just tries too hard in its cringe comedy and not enough in true emotional connection that it's just hard to watch. It's very sad given the plot had so much potential :(

on the better side of netflix rom-coms?
28 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was on the fence on whether to give this movie a 5 or 6, but I'm in a good mood today so here we go.

I'm usually pretty cringed out by these modern netflix original rom-coms, but based off the trailer this one actually seemed like it was going to be more interesting and not as bad. I'm also a sucker for time travel movies so I had to see this one to see how they did it.

I was afraid this movie was going to be hard to watch since adam devine always plays obnoxious, unlikable characters, but in here his humor is a little reeled back and played as more charming and dorky than loud, and he's actually pretty tolerable, even likable at times. You do want to root for him so that's good.

Someone described this movie as Groundhog Day meets 500 Days of Summer, and I completely agree. I'm glad the time travel dynamic isn't heavily explained with a magician or some culturally insensitive evil old woman. Instead it quietly tells the viewer what happened and how it works. And a photo booth is actually a really cool idea for a time machine.

What I really like is how the movie actually flips a convention on its head by making the main character accept that he can't get the girl, and that manipulating time won't actually change her feelings for the other dude. There's one point where noah makes one expression right as he figures this out, and it's kind of a cool scene. You understand his frustration and sadness, and also like him more because you know he's going to do the right thing and be a morally cool dude.

But on the flipside, the other girl that they try to set up with him as the "real" love interest is kind of annoying and she feels forced. I didn't really pick up on any connection between them at the beginning so it feels like a hodge-podge pairing. She's not really all that likable and i think the movie would be much better if either 1) they developed their relationship much more and gave them more chemistry, or 2) just removed her from the equation and have noah end up a single dude at the end, still happy that he's learned something and is ready to move forward. Idk.

The other problem with the movie is just the obvious: it has that slapstick, pop-culture reference kind of humor that's just too cringey and embarrassing for me to take the movie 100% seriously. Instead of a good rom-com with a cringe flavor, it's a cringe rom-com with a good flavor. It's on the much better end of these weird movies, but it still has enough modern cringe vibes to prevent me from liking it much more.

Other than that, there were actually a few pretty good jokes (angus young hopping away angrily made me genuinely laugh out loud) and the rest aren't so bad as to be insufferable or painful at all. I expected a cringey, un-romantic millennial movie and was pleasantly relieved that it was a little better than that. It's worth a watch.

Hello, Dolly! (1969)
10/10
the PERFECT upbeat, feel-good movie
2 March 2021
I was going to say musical in the title but Hello Dolly is also just a perfect movie, not just a perfect musical.

My heart was literally swelling towards the end because of how much I had fallen in love.

All the characters are quirky and likable, Dolly is an incredibly charismatic and iconic protagonist, and they all have lovely chemistry with each other. The songs are AMAZING. So beautiful and fun to sing with a good beat and some really really nice instrumentals like all these old movies tend to have. So many memorable scenes, complicated and animated choreography, and an adorable plot. Literally everything about this movie is fantastic and lovely and by the end you're just left with this incredible feeling. It's awesome.

If I had one complaint, the movie is like two and a half hours, so it's not very convenient for a little tv session. But given the enjoyment and the quality of every single scene, the length is actually just another bonus.

Instant favorite. Absolutely amazing.

Frozen (I) (2013)

way better than I remember!
15 February 2021
I think a lot of us were pretty jaded around 2013 when frozen first came out and we were all bombarded with merchandise and olaf quotes and let it go on repeat for years on end and we hated frozen as a result. but the movie itself is awesome!

it's not perfect but there's so much to love about it. the characters are super dynamic and entertaining, the animation is beautiful, and every single song is incredibly memorable. i'm not surprised it was an instant classic.

if there's anything to critique, i guess some of the songs are a little musically lazy or cliche, and the whole weasletown subplot was kinda mashed in there. but otherwise it's super fun. would watch anytime.

Suspenseful psycho horror >:)

This is such a fun movie to watch. The air of mystery and uncertainty, the subtlety of Michael Myers and the POV camera, the atmosphere... I watched it with a bunch of people in the room so it wasn't so much scary as it was just tense and really interesting. Super well done, aged really well. Would watch every year for Halloween.

Super fun action thriller >:)))
16 November 2020
I love this movie so much because it's exactly the kind of movie I would want to make- an action romance with thriller elements and tons of fun scenes. I love the relationship with Kyle and Sarah and unlike a lot of other movies, their romance is actually necessary to the plot and makes sense. I also like how they respect dogs.

If there's anything to criticize, the gore was a little hard to take (granted I'm never a fan of that anyway) and the final chase scene special effects didn't age very well. Still has that lovable 80s charm to it, though, so it's okay.

All in all I love it. I thought people were hyping it up too much but I actually really understand why it's so popular and well-loved. Would re-watch anytime.

BRILLIANT psychological romance
4 August 2020
This movie is amazing. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're ready for a movie that will make you say "whoa..." like 10 times and leave you thinking about it for the rest of the day, l o o k n o f u r t h e r. All the actors and the different drama tied together is awesome, and the soundtrack also slaps.

This is the movie that gave me respect for jim carrey, in case any of you think he's weird and can't do serious roles. he totally can.

Happy Feet (2006)
5/10
sexualized musical penguin fever dream
4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Now I don't want to hate on Happy Feet and all that just because I gave it a 5, because I don't hate it at all! However, the only positive feelings I have for the movie are downplayed by everything else.

Where do I start? I guess with the one positive about it that stands out: the music. it's FANTASTIC. It's a mix of stevie wonder and other groovy songs with a little bit of hip hop, and I LOVE IT. And the score actually ties in with this instead of being awkwardly side by side with it, like many movies do that try to include both instrumental and pop. I remember once, the score used the same bassline of a stevie wonder song and casually blended into the actual song: it was actually brilliant. The songs themselves are often pretty sexual, forcing the movie to laughably attempt to PG-ify the lyrics in a Kidz Bop fashion.

Come to think of it, a LOT of this movie is really sexual. And I don't point this out as a "children shouldn't be exposed to this!!" sort of way, it's just fairly uncomfortable and unfitting at times. I mean, it explains how music is used in their culture, but sometimes it makes no sense! Like, Mumble's mom calls her husband "daddy" and I guess I didn't pick that up when I was a kid? And then there's Lovelace, and I don't even have to explain that one. And then one time Mumble and Gloria accidentally fell on top of each other on the ice, and they went into like 3 p o s i t i o n s before sorting themselves out. Anyway that was just a weird part of it.

The main thing I want to say is that this movie really wants to be a musical. And you could basically qualify it as one. But the main difference is this: Unlike movie musicals like Disney, where the songs are original and move the plot along, the Happy Feet numbers feel much more like a stage performance, going into dances and even all facing the camera on one plane, as if they were on a stage. This makes a lot of sense on a stage but as a movie it feels as though there's a lack of plot because these songs replace it. If Happy Feet were a stage musical I could see it being much more comfortable.

Finally, the environmental aspect of it. I always forget about the second half of this movie because it's so weird. Except for a few moments of them mentioning fish depletion, the movie barely brings up human interference until the Lovelace part, which if i remember correctly is pretty far into the movie. Then there's the whole zoo scene, which was really depressing honestly. And then he comes out and teaches everyone to dance and the ending feels very weird. It makes sense on paper, like: "Penguin outcast ends up saving the penguin population by using what makes him unusual." But played out, something feels off about it.

There are a few things other than music that I do really like about happy feet. Elijah wood does a great job making the main character feel personal, and if you close your eyes while Mumble is talking, you can hear that his voice acting is actually really good and sounds natural. A few of the jokes are actually pretty funny, and I admire that they managed to take the most boring, uneventful place on earth, antarctica, and turn it into a really fun terrain with caves and slides everywhere. Additionally, there are a few moments where the animation and music hit just right and it becomes really dramatic and cool-looking, which I wish took up more time in the movie.

Overall, I can't hate happy feet because it's so much fun to talk about. but removing all ironic viewing from it makes me have to give it a 5.

also i thought the main character's name was "mambo" for years because nobody in the movie decides to say "mumble" correctly.

the ice queen is a chester

Nothin' GRAPE but pretty decent. I wanted to watch this after seeing harry potter and lotr thinking it was gonna be a similar experience of fantasy film franchises. This a l m o s t got it, but it's kind of missing something.

Edmund is probably the best character because he goes through a lot emotionally, while the other kids don't really change all that much from start to finish. All of the kid acting is pretty good for kid acting and I love all the characters (ESPECIALLY TUMNUS HE'S A DREAMBOAT). The CG is mostly okay? but sometimes it sticks out a little and at first I wanted to give it a pass since it came out in 2005, but then I remembered that LotR and 4 harry potter movies had come out before then and looked way better. I'm not saying Narnia can't be good because they did it better, but it could've been a lot more polished.

Everything else is pretty good and it makes for a fun fantasy movie to watch with a friend. My sister and I were cheering and yelling the whole time at different points (especially when the ice witch was basically sexually harassing edmund, my god), and it's good enough for what it's trying to do.

dreamboat edmund, peter, and tumnus btw

Yu-Gi-Oh! (I) (2000–2006)
8/10
ICONIC 2000s anime
24 July 2020
Now I have a huge amount of bias for this show because I've been watching it as long as I can remember.

I don't usually like anime, with its overly-sexualized girls, obnoxious personalities and seemingly arrogant tone, but there are a few that I've seen that I totally give a pass (I'm not saying all anime is bad of course, just that many seem to fall into annoying conventions that I hate). I absolutely love Yu-Gi-Oh.

The characters are fun to see interact with each other, the drama and events that follow are really grabbing, and I love that it's all about friendship. The English dub is amazing and it's honestly such a great show to rewatch over and over. I still watch Duelist Kingdom again every once in a while.

Anyway, it's definitely not perfect but Yu-Gi-Oh has a special place in my heart that it can never leave. Dreamboat bakura.

Robots (2005)
6/10
*insert robot joke*
23 July 2020
I completely underestimated the energy of this movie. I expected the right amount of quality that it would be, based off my memories of watching it when I was a lot younger.

There is literally a robot joke every four seconds. I'm not joking you. You could pause the screen at literally any time in the movie and either a robot joke would be in the middle of being said, or several are currently going on in the background with animated extras. Literally. If you took a shot every time there was a robot joke, you'd be dead in the first fifteen minutes.

Excluding a lot of CRINGE and some jokes that just didn't work, I was surprised to see that my parents were enjoying a lot of it. And I have to admit, a lot of the little lines they sprinkle out that aren't being shoved in your face are actually hilarious. It's like they had 500 robot jokes and they were all just TOO GOOD not to keep in, so they're all crammed in there. Anyway, the more subtle jokes are the ones that make you laugh.

If you ignore the cringe and can get with the insane energy of Robots, you can appreciate the fun characters and the really satisfying ending. So yeah, I liked it.

Not bad but kinda generic
1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to watch this not just because of tim curry but ALSO because I was hoping this would be a hidden gem, an underrated animated movie that I could tell everyone is actually good. FernGully didn't totally do that, but it still manages to be a cool animated movie.

Like I said, the movie is pretty generic. What I mean by that is it's completely made up of insanely overused movie cliches. To name a few:
  • The whole "you lied to me" scenario
  • environment good, tree cutters bad
  • Old wise person who's the main character's mentor
  • "What are humans like?"
  • Everyone is safe in one area and not allowed to leave because "It's dangerous out there"
  • Main character wants to leave and explore just cuz
  • Old wise character dies and motivates the main character

It's like a mix of several movies: The fairy/human interaction like Epic, environmental conflict with lumberjacks like Rio 2, and the "Tell me about your kind" dynamic like Avatar, Thor, Wonder Woman, Atlantis... to name a few.

But despite all the cliches, everything else is not bad! The animation is actually really cool in some areas, the music and songs are pretty good, and Zak is a dreamboat. In fact, Zak is probably the best thing about the movie because he has the most personality. Overall, it's not bad but I wish it was good enough for me to tell everyone it's underrated.

Good- but NOT A LOVE STORY
17 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to watch this because I heard a lot of people talk about how good it was. I was surprised to hear narration in the beginning, something most critics hate in a movie, narration that isn't even a character, but I could forgive it because I don't mind narration in movies. One thing I probably should have listened to more is the narrator saying "this is not a love story".

Since the movie ends with them breaking up (haha spoiler), I guess it's trying to let you know that this is gonna be more of an analysis of a failed relationship rather than a happy-ending love story, which I would totally be up for as long as I was ready for it. I think a better option would be to show them breaking up (the 500th day) first in the movie, to let you know that it ain't gonna work visually instead of telling you. I think I wouldn't have had my hopes up if I hadn't falsely remembered a spoiler saying they would get back together. I don't know where I got that from.

Anyway, once you remind yourself that this isn't meant to be a romance, this movie is really fun. It's super funny and I love some of the gimmicks they do, like telling you the day of the relationship, flipping back and forth in time, and that one musical number in the middle (which is no doubt the best scene in the whole movie). I like how they accurately portray emotions without making it too gloomy or over-poetic, which a lot of "oFfbEaT rOmAnTiC cOmEdIeS" tend to do. Overall, this is a great movie that I think everyone should watch, and I think there should be more movies made with this style and energy.

Oh yeah I think this goes without saying, but...dreamboat joseph gordon-levitt.

Not that good but doesn't deserve the hate
17 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this when I was younger and defending it as time went on and people criticized it, remembering the movie better than it actually was. I remember dreamboat logan lerman and pretty good costumes and CGI.

Upon returning to it, it's not all that good. The thing is, though, people treat this movie like it's the worst thing ever, a complete mistake, and embarrassment, an insult to the book series, and it's not! People are overreacting.

The CG is kind of laughable at some parts, and other times it's pretty decent. Some of the acting and line delivery is pretty awkward, but logan lerman makes up for it all with his character alone. It's fun to watch when you accept that it's not gonna be perfect, and instead involve yourself in the story and cheer/laugh/shout at the screen with a friend.

One thing I will not stand for is ANNABETH. So insanely unlikeable. She almost kills percy and then we're supposed to LIKE HER? She gets a fat F in my book and if I had the choice, I would make percy kill her when he had the chance instead of politely giving her back the sword. Easily my least favorite character in film history, EVER.

Anyway, if you forgive the movie for all its faults, you can get some genuine enjoyment out of the story, so I give it a 6 for good fun.

A delicious slice of bread
17 June 2020
Listen. No one watches an adam sandler movie for an experimental oscar-winning film, okay? But if you're a gen x'er or you like adam sandler movies, this is great!

It's like a slice of bread. Nothing gritty or of nutritional value, but it's highly enjoyable. This movie was obviously built upon nostalgia, and I can get behind that! We'd all love to go on an outdoor weekend at some expensive lake house and have a jolly good time. We all love gettin' outside electronic-free and having fun.

This movie is a guilty pleasure. It's one of those movies you can't tell people you love. One that, when you watch it, you have to lie and say "oh I love it cuz it's so bad it's good" when in reality you don't think it's all that bad, and you're not laughing AT the movie but WITH the movie. And that's not bad. I watch this whenever I feel down or stressed out, because it's a lot of fun. I speak for all closeted Grown Ups fans.

enjoyable rom-com fun
20 May 2020
I watched this movie a long time ago, and I remember it being really cringey with the Thriller dance number. And then I watched it again the other day with my sister and we spent the entire time swooning over mark ruffalo and making commentary about the characters and outfits.

If you like rom-coms, this one's a classic. And I love the ending so much. Y'know what? I was gonna give this a 7, but the ending alone with everything else makes this worthy of an 8. maybe i'll just leave it at 7 though.

Very very good 80s aesthetic netflix original
18 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I LOVE those small-town mysteries with the kids solving it and all the drama and stuff. It's REALLY good.

I'll say this: The seasons start to get worse as they go on. Season 1 is AMAZING. Easy 9-10/10. Really, really good. Season 2 is pretty good too. Lots of fun moments, but not as good as the first one. Also there's that section where it really wants to be a CW show for like 2 episodes, but just ignore those episodes because they suck. Oh and Maxine is the worst character ever. I hate her guts. Season 3 I didn't finish because it didn't seem very good. All the zing and the magic and mystery of the first season is lost. And the whole "I dump your ass" thing is incredibly stupid. Some little miscommunication and Eleven goes all feminism because the plot wants her to.

Anyway that sounded like a rant. Please watch the first two seasons. You'll love it. It's really, really, really good.
