I really wanted to watch this not just because of tim curry but ALSO because I was hoping this would be a hidden gem, an underrated animated movie that I could tell everyone is actually good. FernGully didn't totally do that, but it still manages to be a cool animated movie.
Like I said, the movie is pretty generic. What I mean by that is it's completely made up of insanely overused movie cliches. To name a few:
It's like a mix of several movies: The fairy/human interaction like Epic, environmental conflict with lumberjacks like Rio 2, and the "Tell me about your kind" dynamic like Avatar, Thor, Wonder Woman, Atlantis... to name a few.
But despite all the cliches, everything else is not bad! The animation is actually really cool in some areas, the music and songs are pretty good, and Zak is a dreamboat. In fact, Zak is probably the best thing about the movie because he has the most personality. Overall, it's not bad but I wish it was good enough for me to tell everyone it's underrated.

- The whole "you lied to me" scenario
- environment good, tree cutters bad
- Old wise person who's the main character's mentor
- "What are humans like?"
- Everyone is safe in one area and not allowed to leave because "It's dangerous out there"
- Main character wants to leave and explore just cuz
- Old wise character dies and motivates the main character
