Every time I come back to this movie I remember it better than it is.
The plot itself has really good potential: a girl gets stuck in the middle of rural Ireland and has to enlist the help of a local to get her to her destination, but the two fall in love along the way. The problem is this movie just fails to be romantic and enjoyable.
First off this movie is just SO CRINGEY. All the chemistry and jokes are just awkward things happening to the main character instead of fun, romantic things. You just run out of steam when every single scene is another embarrassing moment we're supposed to find cute or funny.
Second, the characters have no good romantic chemistry. They have really good chemistry as regular characters bantering in a non-romantic sense, but they clearly aren't meant for each other. They don't get along well and they have completely different interests/lifestyles and so their romance and their decision to get married at the end just doesn't make sense.
Along with that, her fiancé didn't deserve to get dumped like that! They may not be a power couple but he's a generally nice person and for her to just ditch him for mr. Ireland on the spot is pretty rude. AND in all honesty the two of them were better suited for each other than her and declan (is that his name?).
So I really wish I could speak fondly of leap year but it just tries too hard in its cringe comedy and not enough in true emotional connection that it's just hard to watch. It's very sad given the plot had so much potential :(
