A sweet Lovecraft-ian spin on modern war and sci-fi
Amthermandes21 May 2022
It's a chilling story of a group of spec ops soldiers in pursuit of their goal. A cave, insurgents, a hostage, a harrowing discovery that turns into something, if your imagination allows it, that is supposedly supposed to drive any man insane at the mere thought.

It's really cool. A bit mundane of an ending, but what a cool reveal.

Ending killed this episode for me
detlic23 May 2022
Or rather, lack of ending... Pretty decent one, not a bad story, decent way the story is told, well established characters for something this short... BUT... Too many questions left unanswered and eventually makes you ask yourself "what exactly was I watching here and why"?

See no evil hear no evil

Warning: Spoilers
The last scene brings together what seems like a huge mess. When walking out after meeting 'evil' our main character has no ears or ears. An interesting take...

I love these kind of stories but too many clichee
sumtim3s00n22 May 2022
I really like stories where theyre discovering something ancient coupled with adventourous scenes constantly moving forward into new and unknown.

That, this ep had down 100%.

However as others have said, it was a bit silly at times. Why do they always stop and just stare and wait. You cannot destroy an enormous swarm with a few soldiers with rifles.

Aside from that I had hoped for more of a payoff at the end. I know within the episodes timeframe you can only tell so much of a story. But I think they couldve done better, it just felt kind of flat.

Raw

Warning: Spoilers
Episode with very realistic graphics and exorbitant violence and rawness, the atmosphere it creates is very nice and makes you anxious, too bad for the ending which is a bit meaningless because logically it could have ended slightly better.

The Ending is Awesome, Just Too Subtle
johnboyegay24 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So I've read reviewers here seems to have missed the point. And in my understanding it wasn't the evil who took her eyes out, rather it's herself for getting too many disturbing, horrific visions of the future she's gotten from the evil. Basically she's a hero for not giving up on humanity after seeing all those things the evil can cause. Pretty cool.

A satisfying taste of eldritch horror
Don't let another ensemble US marine cast cause your eyes to glaze over early.

What starts as a routine hostage extraction in the Afghan mountains takes an eldritch turn as the squad finds themselves venturing deeper under the mountains.

With slick visuals, great voice acting, and an ending that will scratch an itch for fans of season one's Beyond the Aquila Rift, "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" is an engaging taste of eldritch horror.

Leaves me craving more
aprocks-1687220 May 2022
So far I've been very impressed having binged this season the moment it came out. Personally this is one of my favorite episodes of the season just by the sheer brutality found in this one. Makes me feel like I'm in a call of duty cutscene which I LOVE. Although predictable at times, the ending really opens a window for so much more exploration, just like many of these episodes making me crave for more. What these animators are doing is one of a kind, and I really hope these short of animations motivate future shows in a similar format because I for one would binge those in a heartbeat.

dark pictures house of ashes meets hellboy 2 and cthulu
MiloSuperSpesh27 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So we have the hot headed cliche army group, watching some stuff happen and then suddenly in a tomb with somewhat mechanical bone eaters, and then cthulu wanting to be free.

The set up is right out of house of ashes, but in a fraction of the time.

Hellboy because of the bone eaters devouring people quickly.

Once you put aside the shocking amount of dumb decisions they make, how do people not work out the ending ??

The woman is holding a bloody knife, and she had no bullets, so it's pretty obvious if you've paid any attention to this episode she removed her ears and eyes herself to stop cthulu controlling her.

Classic, calm and horrifying

Warning: Spoilers
Starting as alien copycat but turning into a good eldritch horror. The ongoing feeling of curiosity is what made the episode great in my opinion. Last scene was butter on the bread...

Cool Chthulu rendition
Blade_Baron17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
OK, someone has imprisoned a badass-looking Chthulu deep in this mountain (not deep enough) and surrounded said prisoner with various forms of deadly mayhem to keep people away.

Lots have pointed out the dumbest actions, like trying to solve the spider problem by shooting them. How many could you get even if you spent every round? 1%? Less. Dumb, nobody would do something so dumb. And there's more of that kind of thing. Did he really think he could take out a 2-foot thick iron chain with a grenade? The only question is whether it would even leave a mark!

I don't trash the ending though. It's a tough thing to wrap up. Let him escape confinement to bathe the world in blood and horror? Or not. I think she gouged out her own eyes so he couldn't mesmerize her into trying to release him. Like someone said, maybe also to try and end the horrible images Chthulu sent her way.

TL;DR The dumb stuff in the script is too aggravating, but if you like giant monsters (I do) it's worth that 17-minute look.

First Major Appearance of a ''character'' i always wanted to see.
someoneelseskyfall22 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I actually screamed Cthulhu! When i saw it. Yes it's a nothing plot but the ending is a dream come true for many of us Lovecraft fans. Also i could see this made into a movie which will be a big plus in my opinion.

Not necessarily bad, but...
Riddler9120 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"God is dead"? Wtf is that supposed to mean? Such a stupid line, completely out of nowhere. Probably just a way for the writer to shout what his "beliefs" are. This type of stuff always pulls me out of the tension of the moment, if only writers didn't need to always insert their social/religious views in every thing they can.

Fantastic Animation, However...
jimhaney-1222421 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What a crap premise, suicidal characters, and just half-assed 'plot'. Why shoot at orange/apple-sized SWARM of killer robot things? Just run away, oh wait no, lets turn at shoot at them! Okay, someone died? IMPOSSIBLE, stand around and stare so we lose ground. THEY FOLLOWED US? NOW RUN... oh wait...

Neat Unreal Engine Demo
holy_big_sandwich27 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Doing an homage to Lovecraft is like covering Led Zeppelin. They're both super popular, endlessly emulated and almost no one gets it right. The reason is, for zeppelin, those 70s hard rock jams are packed to the brim with subtleties and complexity (a tad plagiarized but that's another conversation). Most bands will learn a song or two but can't combine all the pieces together into the real deal. No drummer sounds like Bonham, singers can't sniff Plant's range and the virtuosity of Page and JPJ are one of a kind.

Lovecraft is all about atmosphere, dread and the most cosmic of cosmic horrors suffocating your thoughts with every step into madness. What "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" tries, is a weak attempt at ripping off "Predator" where the predator is Cthulu. This doesn't work for a thousand reasons. So many faults any man would gouge their eyes out to avoid the horrific cosmic mediocrity.

All-American marines stumble into a cave somewhere in not-Afghanistan hunting not-terrorist and find little glowy bacteriophages that turn their battle brothers and sisters into purple soup. From there, deeper into the cave we find the ancient prison of a lovecraftian dark god who uses its cursed tongue to control the seargent forcing the lowly private to put her beloved CO in the ground before he unleashes an apocalyptic evil.

There's some tension and some brutal deaths but thats about it. With only 15 minutes its tough to set up the tone while slowly building dreaful atmosphere. But much like the marines, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Lovecraft is the opposite of a straight line. So we get carboard gun people getting killed with little regard and the only moment of fear is what might become of our world if this dark god is finally released. But thats quickly silenced and we're left with an almost comical conclusion of our "hero" self-blinded wandering the desert tripping over rocks.

What keeps this short from total failure is the use of the unreal engine. My god does this ever look good. Lighting effects, facial animation, atmosphere effects, dust, debris, liquids, solids. It really blows me away and excites me for what game developers are going to do with this technology.

Anyway, now you know why every cover you've heard of black dog sounds like trash.

A lot of people are hating this episode but I personally loved the cliffhanger. However, I agree that it was a bit silly at times, other than that it was a very good episode overall.

Stop Making Afghanistan shorts

Why are writers obsessed with Afghanistan and or military? They are boring AF. It's was a stupid war that should only be spoken of in shame by the US.

Hits and misses in this derivative Lovecraftian horror
jamesrupert20145 July 2022
A Special Forces team tracking kidnap victims enter a cave where an ancient horror awaits in chains. Unfortunately the interesting premise and striking ending are marred by the clichéd 'bro-banter-tough-guy' wisecracking soldiers and the sometimes ridiculousness of their actions. The imagery is good although not overly imaginative.

Did they have to show the last shot...
thefoochie20 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, and I thought "bad travelling" was disturbing. This episode will probably give me nightmares. Don't get me wrong, all of the soldiers' deaths were horrifying, but by far the most disturbing part was the ending. The two main characters are lured into finding this monstrosity that looks like Cthulhu, and when it opens its eyes, they see flashes of it ravaging the world. It tries to force the woman to release it from its chains, but she doesn't listen to it. So... the monster decides to... rip her eyes out. God, that was so disturbing. If I her I would have just shot myself instead of trying to shoot the Cthulhu looking thing. Great episode, 8/10.

The Doom Eternal that Came.
southdavid18 August 2022
Netflix's "Love, Death and Robots" series returns for a Third run. Overall, I enjoyed the first two seasons and wrote short individual reviews for each episode and I think I'll take the same approach here.

A special forces team are tracking a hostage across the mountains of Afghanistan. They track and follow the terrorists into a cave system and, after discovering some skeletons, stripped of all flesh, discover that the dark holds a threat worse than any they were anticipating. But as they head deeper and deeper in, they discover an ancient horror, imprisoned, but yearning for freedom.

I often like the idea of the usage of Eldritch horror in media, more than I end up liking the execution, but this was, I thought, pretty well done. It's not extraordinary visually, but about par with higher end video game cut scenes - which makes sense if it was made in the unreal engine. The characters played by Joe Manganiello, Jai Courtney and Christian Serratos looked like the actors enough that I recognised them without the voices. The vocal performances are fine though, even if there's not much in the way of emotion to display and the dialogue isn't up to much.

It's a solid little short story combining an initial genuine threat with the more psychological aspects of the ancient evil using it's powers on the survivors to try and get out.

Love Death + Robots does good mil-scifi
anthonyduffy5 June 2022
My only problem with this is that I'd love a series of it. The animation was breathtaking. The air of menace was incredible, unashamedly Lovecraftian. Love death and robots just keep on pumping out excellent military Sci-Fi. We love it. Clichéd or not. It's what works. The snobs will give out about a formula. But they work.

Looks great but super dumb
stephenbrown-5072721 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers ahead.

So you're in a cave system with thousands of spider/crab things that have just eaten your squad mate in a matter of seconds. Why are stood still shooting at this unstoppable wave of individual creatures instead of tuning away as fast as possible? Then when a squad mate staggers out of the cave after being torn to bits and literally falls apart ... another squaddies goes "I could of helped him!" ... how exactly?

This one needs its own show for sure.
tonymatthewsjr6 June 2022
After watching this short I'm craving more. I have to know how it started how it's going and how it will end. The creative mind behind this episode has definitely exceeded my expectation. Hopefully netflix will read this and put this episode into a full production animation series.

A fantastic idea with little time.
watters-0309423 May 2022
I loved the idea of this episode. It had such an amazing progression that I definitely did not expect. The beginning of a seemingly normal military mission turned sci-fi in the best way possible. The only flaw, of course, is the time. Everything wouldn't feel rushed if it had even 10 more minutes. Honestly, this is a story worthy of consideration of a full length film. Definitely worth a watch, either way.
