Love, Death & Robots: In Vaulted Halls Entombed (2022)
Looks great but super dumb
Spoilers ahead.
So you're in a cave system with thousands of spider/crab things that have just eaten your squad mate in a matter of seconds. Why are stood still shooting at this unstoppable wave of individual creatures instead of tuning away as fast as possible? Then when a squad mate staggers out of the cave after being torn to bits and literally falls apart ... another squaddies goes "I could of helped him!" ... how exactly?
Bluey (2018)
Possibly Australia's greatest cultural export.
Genuinely hilarious for parents and engaging for the kids. I know treat my kids as pillows and pianos.
Outside the Wire (2021)
American peace keepers in Europe
The text exposition in the first minute of the film states that an American peace keeping force has come to quell a civil war in Eastern Europe. Not an army from Germany, France, the UK or even Italy ... no, of course for some reason the Americans are here. Turned it off as it's obviously just going to be more cookie cutter action rubbish. Gave it 4 stars as that's the average so far.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Wow! I cried, I laughed and I almost vomited with giddiness.
This episode alone has redeemed Star Wars. Loved it.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
So much with so little
On a Friday night my wife and I watch Star Trek Discovery and The Mandalorian. The contrast between the shows is so stark, STD packs in so much dialogue, noise, emotion and is visually dense but to no real effect. The Manadalorian is simple, paired back, often quiet and it's all the better for it. This episode alone is better than the last 3 films and all of STD.
Skyline (2010)
A guilty pleasure
This movie is terrible, it's a couple of runs above being one of those Megashark vs Volcano films from the Asylum. The actors and acting are horrid, Donald's Faison will forever be Dr. Turk from Scrubs and staring at leading man Eric Balfour's crescent moon face is just off putting. All that said, the film is entertaining and if I ever come across it while flicking channels I'll happily sit and watch it. Amusingly the character with the most charisma and the only one you even remotely care for is an entirely CGI stealth drone who valiantly weaves its way through a cloud of enemy fighters.
Another Life (2019)
Good lord
The most critical mission in the history of the human race and they send a crew full of unprofessional, bratty a*seholes.
Final Space (2018)
Gives me the feels
My wife and I gave this a go after we finished Rick and Morty. At first we found Gary a bit annoying but we kept on and by time we'd finished the season we were in love. There are moments that leave you in stunned silence and the music score is just brilliant. Can't wait for season 2!
Airplane vs. Volcano (2014)
What? Hang on??? Wait... no what?
Oh my good lord. Even by the amazingly awful standards of the SyFy channel this is terrible. I hope this isn't the first things Aliens ever come across about the human species. Who green lights this kind of hilarious rot? Get drunk and watch it. So you're going to go outside the plane to dislodge a chunk of super hot lava from a giant engine using a hammer that was in your carry on luggage while wearing an oxygen mask that isn't connected to any oxygen? You think this is a good idea? How big is this volcano? You've been flying at 500mph for over an hour now and you're still in the middle of it?! By the end of the movie it just starts steeling lines from Star Wars (Red 5) and Independence Day (let's plow the road). Just terrible if sober.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A triumphant, goosebump inducing hair raising journey back to what we all love about Star Wars
I'm in my 30's, brought up on the original trilogy and I try to pretend the prequels don't exist so I (and my brother and dad) had such high hopes for this film. We left deliriously happy.
Yes, the story doesn't stray very far from what has gone before but that doesn't matter at all. The new cast are all excellent and spar off each other brilliantly, BB-8 is a joy in every scene and the film just delivers everything you want ... capable acting, a strong lead, drama, action, lore and fan service ... everything that the prequels failed to do. It feels and sounds like a star was movie should with CGI never taking centre stage over practical effects or more importantly, the acting. The original cast are used well, again with the focus clearly being on moving forward in the saga. One thing I really liked is that the First Order were a credible and real threat, something that needed to be stopped with urgency.
As a stand alone film it's great. As an addition to the Star Wars universe it breathes new life and washes away the stink of I, II and III.
