Fire Danny into the Sun
slak96u22 July 2022
The last couple episodes haven't been unwatchable, but they also haven't been good. The show has just been so....boring and flat. I get the need to build characters, especially as the series moves on to new ones, but where is this going? Everything is so dour and overwhelming. Where is some levity, where is the hope, what happened to the fun and excitement? Half the characters are unlikable now, give me something, anything to root for....

Also can I just say, over 3 seasons, the Danny storyline has been the absolute worst one over its entire run. I'm. So. Over. It. Make it stop, please....

Enough with the Melodrama
BoomerFan24 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Someone should have shoved Danny out an airlock without a spacesuit ages ago. Depending on Ed's fate and whatever that end-scene disaster means for the future of the Helios base, he is either going to have to step up and be the hero, or take the whole Helios-Russian venture down with him; what kind of deal will Karen have to make with NASA to save them all? Meanwhile, Margo, mourning her doomed Russian love, can't avoid getting exposed in the leaked engine plans scandal for much longer, not with her protege Aleida still sniffing around like a dog with a bone. Speaking of brewing scandals, how can Ellen's Presidential motorcade just show up outside Pam's house without attracting attention?

Note to the writers: a little less soap opera-ish melodrama, and a lot more space drama. Please!

Sick of Danny melodrama
steelebecky22 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So the drug-addled psychopath just happened to be the only one paying attention during a critical stage of drilling for water? Sure, why not. At least the episode ended with some action reminding them and us just how dangerous space can be. Otherwise, I am SO over any storyline involving Danny. So far, I haven't enjoyed this season nearly as much as the first two. Despite some soap opera elements even then, there was way more focus on the space race, space exploration, and the dangers and moral dilemmas involved.

Danny suicide fast please
user-3558327 July 2022
This storyline is tired and annoying. Please make it stop now. Focus on the good stuff and do not let it become Peyton Place on Mars. Too many good stories to tell.

so many pointless storylines make even mars exploration boring
q-83817-65499022 July 2022
Whats the point with stealing statue storyline? Whats the point with president is gay storyline? Whats the point with kid going crazy storyline? Remove all these useless filler and show some mars exploration. Spend more time on how they build a drill to extract water, or how serge modified their blueprint to make their russian rocket, what experiements are they doing on mars, or at least something related to space and not just drama.

Probably the worst episode in the series because it makes no sense.
charlieedmond31 July 2022
Why is a man that is clearly challenging personal demons left in charge of the command console? Why did the Commander think it a good idea to not confine him until he comes to his senses? If you want a good Mars story go and watch M A R S by National Geographic, it has decent actors, a really good story and an excellent documentary esque to it between story segments.

Just like with the Moon shooting, the ending scene here has that same lack of logic.

Filler
chrisforeman-0192025 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Felt like one of those mid season fillers. That occurred in season one and two. Its not unwatchable but apart from the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes you could skip the middle bit. I agree with most of the other commentators that the Danny arc just doesn't really work. Seems a bit predictable. Everything else is ok and we are clearly being set up for a rip roaring finale .

relevant to current times
farmerboy20 September 2023
The episode and story arcs are unfortunately very similar to current events. Even something good like space exploration can be brought down by partisan politics, disinformation, conspiracies, extremism, homophobia, etc.

Problem is, we are surrounded by all that every day on TV and social media and the very reason I watch a space exploration show to escape exactly that if only for a few hours.

Space Exploration, especially with an alternate timeline is very appealing to me as I can't help but imagine... "What if ?" When the current reality is "too" present, it has the opposite effect.

That is why I rated this episode a little lower.

Great show, lame episode
dramses7927 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have been thoroughly enjoying the show so far, but the Danny subplot has become really annoying, soap-opera-like and unnecessary.

All of a sudden, the whole future of space exploration is jeopardized due to the actions of a mentally unstable "teenager", who apparently has been able to fool hundreds of people, left completely unsupervised (even when beginning to show signs of instability), and with the (lack of the) press of a button brings the whole thing down...all of it just because he was in love with the ex-wife of his father's best friend.

I mean...in love the show, but they've really screwed up in this episode.

Takes suspension of belief to whole new heights
mcctocso25 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's been said many times that the way these people act should result in all of these catastrophic failures. Every step of the way idiocy has reigned supreme. Danny is a terrible character and I don't care to see him redeemed. Here are all the things we are meant to believe to this point:

1) That Helios and NASA would allow so many personal connections for one of the most critical and dangerous missions in human history. Apparently CRM isn't a thing in this timeline.

2) That NASA allows direct news feeds to be broadcast from Mars to Earth, unmonitored.

3) That they would approve a known substance abuser with personal connections to the Flight Commander to take a mentally and physically exhausting mission.

4) That highly addictive medicine, and apparently all of the ships medicine, is easily accessible and not highly controlled and counted. Apparently that giant ship has no professional flight doctor.

5) That time and time again there are no fail-safes or procedures to ensure redundancy. "I gotta go off comms to run the numbers" is the most laughable beat. When I was a flight communication operator you had about 5 people on comms for routine operations in the air. Redundancy. But these terrible writers hate redundancy.

6) Drilling for water...on the edge of a cliff.... 7) No pressure failsafe for the drill.

8) Kellys attitude and drama with her father again would never happen because she wouldn't be there...also how was she a pilot + a top tier microbiologist? You can't study microbiology at Annapolis.

9) Ed would put his life in Danny's hands after berating him and having multiple conflicts...again I guess Helios has no CRM procedures.

10) Helios has no procedure in place in case someone suffers from space madness/becomes disruptive to the crew.

This show has lost me. Too much is sacrificed for the sake of manufactured drama. There are plenty of ways to introduce drama. But clearly the production team values everything else besides a good script. Done with this mess.

45 minutes of filler 5 minutes of space
bluejays-8804525 July 2022
I waited 6 episodes into this season for the characters to get to Mars. Now that they are on Mars all we are focusing on is the President's gay husband, Danny's brother, Danny, Margo and the Russians etc. My mistake, I had thought once man had reached Mars for the first time ever we might actually do things on Mars and see things on Mars and have action on Mars. This is lousy, boring, third rate filler and a waste of everyone's time.

Do better.

Get rid of Danny
jp-20625 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was really enjoying season three but the Danny storyline is just bringing down the entire season. The writing in this episode became lazy and predictable. We were doing good up until this but this episode is barely watchable.

Stop the Danny
anders-ohlsson-sthlm23 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously. A good show spoiled by a Danny side story that has no meaning at all. Do think I will continue my subscription of Apple TV.... Let's hope Danny will be confined in his quarters for the rest of the show.

The stupid parts outweigh the good parts
bonniewarford-3798823 July 2022
I like this show, but the Danny subplot is really trying my patience. I know Helios is a private company and mission, but really, are we to believe that they would let Oxycodone (a CLASS II NARCOTIC) just sit on a shelf where anyone could get it and gulp down as many as they want? At the very LEAST, it would be locked in a cabinet, and ideally two different people would have to verify counting the pills and dispensing it. Because, y'know, not only is it a HIGHLY ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE, if they were to run out they err, uhhh, ARE ON ANOTHER PLANET AND CAN'T GET ANY MORE.

Also, if Danny was taking only one at a time, his latest ingestion where he was shown to shake at least eight or nine tablets out of the bottle and swallow them all at once? He wouldn't have had to worry about feeling out of sorts and ill-tempered, he would have had to worry about continuing to breathe.

Finally, it's time, and past time, for someone to call Ed out on his "be a man" macho bullcrap. Although I suppose that's a testament to Joel Kinnaman as an actor, that he can make Ed a selfless professional one minute and a toxic jackass the next.

I love the overall Mars storyline, but some of the characters have turned into idiots this season.

Off the rails
michaeljamesmerritt24 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Initially loved this series but now I'm expected to believe they'd leave insane Danny unsupervised on the mission...it's to create drama but at the cost of any reality or believable action. Don't get me started on the unbelievable plot regarding the Soviets who would be eliminated as a threat immediately after the nonsense they pull in every episode lately.

Please hit the reset button and get back to writing a believable alternate reality.

okay episode but danny sucks so much
tylervt23 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really have no issues with any of these other side stories i see a lot of people complaining about all the time, and overall this episode wasnt that bad but honestly why is danny is still alive??

His character really just sucks all around. No redeemable qualities. And i have no doubt that even the show gives him some sort of redemption that there is nothing that would make me feel for him, or like him all of a sudden. No matter what he does now, everything hes done so far just sucks and makes you hate him just for the sake of having a terrible character.

And now danny being a little bitch probably just got like 4 people (all relatively likable characters) killed and we now have to deal with at least one more episode of danny sucking for no reason.

And with a show with less, and less, likable characters every season, its just annoying. I really want to skip everytime danny is on screen.

...and the lazy writing continues.
BLAlley22 July 2022
Watching Apollo 13 or even The Martian could have benefited the show runners and writers greatly. Space exploration is wrought with challenges and dangers, making it unnecessary to inject forced drama and tension by including psychopaths and snowflakes on a mission to Mars, while ignoring science in favor of nonsensical patches for said lazy writing. Perhaps it would have been better had they hired real technical advisers rather than Star Trek nerds. It's not a coincidence that Star Trek has suffered from the exact same issues since 2005.

No Human has been out of visual range of Earth, and the communication lag means a Mars crew will be isolated like no one else in our history. That is already far more compelling than dumbed-down melodrama. They even hinted at the moral dilemma of possibly wiping out indigenous life, but immediately dropped it in favor of the aforementioned moronic tropes.

They literally drilling for the water on the edge of the kliff.
joejetloky24 July 2022
It fits perfectly with the general characteristics of this series. This series is aimed at a specific viewer and this is definitely not someone who knows anything about space travel, Mars exploration and the chances of finding water several meters from the cliff.

Bad writing and uninteresting side stories
srbntymv22 July 2022
The bad writing become more and more apparent with each passing episode this season. The behaviors of some of the characters in this episode is sometime so questionable, you start to wonder how any of these characters managed to get into the positions they are in. The side stories are again, same as in the previous season, cringeworthy and uninteresting.

Not believable
jonasmattsson25 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This story with Danny is not very realistic... Danny gets to be in control of the most important mission on Mars to date when he is a known addict and not in control of himself? And no one is even watching him? Like wtf???

Mars sure is boring
juliancpoole24 July 2022
Along with the previous episode it sure seems Mars atmosphere makes for stunningly boring television. It feels like the scriptwriters have given up. There is a whole planet on the other side of door but no, let's keep them inside the Mars lander and enact scenes that would befit a Hallmark TV series.

The script and storyline is as desolate as Mars itself.

Frankly - shame on the scriptwriters and to kill a show in this way.

I just don't understand why season 3 emphasize so much on personal feelings, emotions, and relationships. There are so many stories to tell, they are going to the mars.

95% of this episode sucks
phelectric22 July 2022
Only interesting part is like the last 5%. After watching the painfully boring show "Invasion" I'm starting to feel as if this show is going down hill in that's same fashion, bad writting. More space Sci-Fi would save this show but they focus more on suuuper boring story lines, but worse than they is the way they execute those story lines. Need to get back on track or this show is dead to me as well. Better have a talk with your writers or find new ones.
