Chapter Six: The Spy (#2.6)
ComedyFan201021 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It was pretty fun to watch Dustin work with Steve. They were a great team and also their talk on how Dustin should attract Max was kind of funny. The funniest character though is Lucas's little sister. Love her. It got pretty intense when Lucas and Max joined Dustin and Steve and especially when all those dermogorgons started surrounding Steve. Will helping everyone to figure out what is going on is also a nice part of the story. I liked Nancy and Jonathan in previous season but in this one something is missing. That whole thing about them being friends or in love didn't feel very good.

This episode is crazy. as all the story collided together. The story is good. but some character's logic is weird. like, why did they have to do that? It is not necessary for them.

I'm trembling in fear even now. Scary stuff for a TV show.

The dark atmosphere, the horror, the screams, the monsters - all amazing, all mind-blowing !

My heart's full of tension.

I spy with my little eye, something beginning with 'D'.

Warning: Spoilers
Dustin gets Steve to help deal with Dartagnan the demogorgon, which has tunnelled its way out of the storm cellar. Nancy and Jonathan get it on. Will clearly has a symbiotic relationship with the shadow monster, suffering ill effects as a result. Max opens up to Lucas about her past. And Dr. Owens' men explore the subterranean tunnels.

Lots more going on in episode six, with just as many unanswered questions to ensure that you keep on coming back for more. The quieter, relationship-driven drama is, as always, handled very well, but for me the highlights of this chapter are the exciting showdown against the demogorgons (yes, plural!) at the junkyard, and the finale, in which Owens' men are attacked by the creatures as the doctor helplessly monitors their deaths on a screen (a scene reminiscent of the xenos attacking the marines in Aliens; Paul Reiser must have felt right at home).

This episode was dark and exciting! The pieces that were set up are moving with great effect! The foundation is laid for a great finale!

Nice homage to Aliens near the end!

They're Almost Here!
Hitchcoc31 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My goodness! What intensity! Once Dustin allowed that little slug to take over, a price has been paid. It appears that this is only one of the many creatures that have taken over underground in this little town. Will is the carrier of the virus and he is at the center of everything. His family cares about him, but he is incredibly dangerous. He speaks for the prolific life form that seems intent on a taking over. In another plot development, El has moved in with her aunt. That leaves Hopper out of her life. His volatility has caused this, but that's just the way he is. Nancy and Jonathan finally connect in a way other than two people facing evil. Information has been fed to big newspapers to set the groundwork for some serious investigation. The boys, along with Mad Max, take on the little monster, and they are about to become lunch when something directs them to a meeting place. Will has the way. He is at the beck and call of this life force and it brings about death.

See no evil
TheLittleSongbird9 November 2021
Netflix has really varied with its shows, but 'Stranger Things' to me is one of its hits. In their prime, it, 'The Crown' and 'House of Cards' (despite its terrible final season) were absolutely brilliant. Season 1 is excellent and Season 2, while a slow starter (unlike its first season) and with one of the show's worst episodes in it, was very nearly as great on the whole and did quickly build momentum. Season 3 on the whole felt like a different show.

"Chapter Six: The Spy" is one of the best episodes of Season 2, very like its previous episode and on the same level in brilliance. It is also one of the best, most exciting and most intense 'Stranger Things' episodes, that builds upon what the previous episodes showed, progressed both the mystery and the characters and also leaves one pondering with questions waiting to be answered later on. Nothing filler-like here at all and leaves one excited for what's to come.

Everything is superb in "Chapter Six: The Spy". The production values are superb. Very stylish and atmospheric, with some truly beautiful images that one can't believe such high quality comes from a Netflix show. Not to mention the highly impressive special effects that put a good deal of big budget films in recent years to shame. The music has a wonderful 80s nostalgic vibe while also being quite haunting, enhancing the atmosphere beautifully.

Also incredibly impressive is the beautifully balanced writing. That has a lot of thought and intrigue, with the usual brains and heart. The storytelling is tremendously engaging, atmospheric and never simplistic or convoluted. Loved the intimate and un-noisy relationship writing (had no problem with Nancy and Jonathan's story here) and the episode also shines in the suspenseful and intense action. Especially the showdown and the ending, which is one of the most intense of the whole show. It is rich in affectionate nostalgia (reminiscent of Stephen King's depiction of childhood), poignant emotional impact and suspenseful turns in the more mysterious elements.

Furthermore, the character writing is spot on. Dustin and Steve have really progressed as characters and very quickly. As is the acting, particularly from the younger cast.

Overall, outstanding. 10/10.

Chapter 6
bobcobb3012 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was the best episode of the season to this point. The right amount of action, a cliffhanger at the end and even some romance thrown in. The show has always been about replicating the 80's style of movies, but this was like a mini 80's movie in its own right.

The season hasn't quite matched Season 1, but this was a step in the right direction.

Why?
Abdulxoxo18 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Why are the main characters from the first season sidelined? Eleven, Mike etc have little screentime this season.

and where is Eight, the one that was introduced in the beginning. she's no where to be found. isn't it time we got a little insights about her?

I'm totally not a fan of Nancy and Jonathan's storyline. it's just unnecessary. there's just too many disjointed storylines this season but I'm still curious as to how they will converge to form a single storyline with Eleven and everyone else.

Demogorgon hunting
TheDonaldofDoom12 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Dustin and Steve get some development, which although it comes during a mundane Demogorgon hunt which doesn't carry any tension until near the end of the episode, it is nice to see Steve is actually transforming into a nice person. The showdown with the Demogorgons is intense and seeing there's so many of them is a real shock. Where did the others come from?

Will's scenes are even more gripping. What's so clever about it is how Will suddenly appears to know how to hurt the creature without being hurt himself and tells the scientists how to do it. It feels like it's going to be a fairly predictable plot, until you find out he was setting a trap for them all along. Will is the spy. The only way that final scene could have been improved is if some characters we actually care about had been killed by the Demogorgons.

Other character development isn't as good. Jonathan and Nancy's subplot has been out if place and it's hard to care about it. And the scene where they kiss is... it's as if the writers tried to think of the most cringey way possible to execute that scene. Elsewhere, the real surprise about finally finding out May's backstory is how mundane it is.

Can't wait for the epic final battle
funnycommentor7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, the ending was totally unexpected and as it seems, the final battle might start on the next episode.. The most intense scene of that episode was, on the bus, where Lucas, Dustin, Steve and Max had been trying to capture the creature. Eventually, nothing happened. Also, now I'm sure that Will has been possessed by the shadow creature. By the way, I feel so sad about Joyce, about all the things she's going through.. Last but not least, Dustin and Steve was an unexpected duo, that we need to see MORE! Another thing I noticed about that episode was, that we didn't saw anything about El.

S2.E6 - Monsters Everywhere [9/10]
panagiotis19935 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S2. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 6 ''Chapter Six: The Spy''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Damn, what is going on with Will? Time to kill Dart! Dart escaped? That sucks. Murray is weird but also cool. Nancy and Jonathan have good chemistry. And... they kiss, so cute. Will doesn't remember Bob? What is going on? He also doesn't remember Jim, that's so sad, I feel so bad for Will. I was expecting to see only Dart but more monsters came, insane. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Will come in the laboratory. Murray find that Nancy and Jonathan are clearly more than friend. Luca find Dustin: Max and luca become closer. Nice episode with some interesting scenes: so funny the part with Murray, Nancy and Jonathan. We see the relationship between luca and max become more serious and we can understand some stuff with Will and his visions and his link with the up side down.

Bad Dialogue and Character Development
Samuel-Shovel14 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Chapter 6", Steve, Dustin, Lucas, & Max set a trap with chum, leading Dart to a dump in the hopes of destroying him. They quickly realize their mistake as Dart has grown and attacks them with some newfound friends. Meanwhile, Nancy & Jonathan help Murray make copies of the tape to release to the press. They spend the night at Murray's and end up in bed together. The Hawkins Lab can't figure out how to fix Will, although they now realize the full extend of Will's connection to the Upside Down and the monster creating the tunnels. He feels its pain and helps the monster set up a trap, killing the men sent into the tunnels with Dart & friends and a fog machine. They appear to be heading for the lab as we hit credits.

The dialogue in this episode was atrocious. The scene where Max & Lucas have a heart-to-heart on the roof of the bus was painful to watch; people don't talk like that, they don't reflect like that, especially children. There is no subtlety in this scene. It's suppose to develop the characters further but the Duffer brothers have no trust in their audience and decide to spell everything out for us so we don't have to do any critical thinking. Max's lines are unbelievable.

I'm not sure whether I love or hate the character of Murray. Brett Gelman is feeding us a enormous ham sandwich in his scenes; it keeps things interesting to say the least. But maybe his overacting is exactly what this show needs.

I feel like every episode I grumble about this but the 80's references and nudges need to stop. I was pulling my hair out when Nancy & Jonathan were doing the Indiana Jones bit where the two love interests talking to themselves, distraught in their rooms, only to emerge and see each other. Ugh...

Steve Harrington has a bulge, and you're gonna know about it
FestusNord8 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode was good. Just wondering if the bulge was an esthetic choice by the production, or implying the character of Steve stuffs a sock in his pants to go demogorgon hunting.
