A Decent Movie Despite the Same Formula
spasek11 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Hallmark's screenwriters must have a template hidden somewhere, so that they can simply substitute new names, settings, etc. Don't believe me? In the "Christmas Cottage," here's what we get (just like most other Christmas movies).

Estranged Couple - This usually goes one of two ways: you get a former couple who are reunited (like with this film), or you get two strangers who meet and click. Here we have Lacey, a workaholic woman who returns home for her best friend's wedding. On the other side of the table, we've got Ean, a cook who enjoys traveling the world and is the brother of the bride.

Setting - a small, quaint heavily decorated Christmas town. Once in a while, you get a large city setting, but most of these films are in a small town.

Activities - In the small town setting, you invariably have: sled riding, Christmas tree lighting, snowman building, decorating, going for rides in a sleigh, cooking/serving for the under-privileged, etc.

Rival - There is almost always a rival in these films. In this case, we have Roger, who happens to be Lacey's boss, and is totally business driven, much like Lacey.

The Shift - This is where the one person (Lacey, in this case) needs to find the magic of Christmas. Of course, the magic of Christmas is the catalyst to helping someone change. Here, you have to just "go with it." These movies aren't supposed to be realistic, as most people don't simply change so easily.

Second Thoughts - This is where someone, or sometimes, both people are contemplating their "new situation/new feelings" and are unsure about what to do. Usually within the last 7 minutes of the film, an epiphany strikes, and one/both people are in a situation where they can confess their undying love for each other.

My favorite Hallmark films are those that take a chance; where the writers do something different. "Finding Father Christmas" and "Engaging Father Christmas" are two films that do this really well.

The performances in Christmas Cottage are good, and despite the formula, it's still enjoyable to watch, for the most part. However, because it's so formulaic, the ceiling is set very low, which means that it isn't likely to stand apart from the other films that have the exact...same...formula.

Hallmark needs to hire some creative writers who can come up with some new plots and characters that don't adhere so strictly to what should be called, "The Hallmark Christmas Formula."

You're likely to enjoy this film, but find yourself saying at the end, "new movie, same story."

Great Steve Lund movie!
lyndavanleeuwen11 November 2020
Watched this because hubby likes Merritt Patterson & I love watching Steve Lund!! Satisfied both of us: Steve Lund's Ean role was quite appealing, nice to see 'Lacey's' role evolve! Pleasant setting, but the bride character was annoying. Glad we watched it!

I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 400 ( C H R I S T M A S ) MOVIES AND SPECIALS.

PLEASE BEWARE OF SOME REVIEWERS THAT ONLY HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW. WHEN ITS A POSITIVE THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE PRODUCTION. NOW I HAVE NO AGENDA! I REVIEW MOVIES & SPECIALS AS A WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN! I HAVE DISCOVERED MANY GEMS IN MY QUEST TO SEE AS MANY " C H R I S T M A S " MOVIES AS I CAN.

I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 400 ( C H R I S T M A S ) MOVIES AND SPECIALS.

Lacey has already given up on love. Her heart's been broken too many times, and now she concentrates on her career as an interior designer in Raleigh, North Carolina. When BFF Ava Callahan asks Lacey to be her maid of honor, she must take on a few responsibilities, including making sure the Callahan family cottage is perfect for the honeymoon. Legend has it that if newlyweds spend their first night there, everlasting love and happiness follow. Lacey isn't sure she buys into that notion. Still, when she finds herself snowed in there with Charlie, Ava's brother, Lacey has to reconsider if the little house may hold some romantic magic after all.

The film would not be bad had it cast someone else as the male lead. Steve Lund can not make his part come to life. Merritt Patterson however makes the most of what is given to her.

The hidden message however in this film is "Women who are never married will never be happy".

The film does nothing original. The fun thing to with this movie is to see if you can figure what other Hallmark Movies were filmed at the same locations that were used here.

Name confusion
slentner17 August 2018
Lacey first addresses her boss/boyfriend as "Walter" in an early scene, but refers to him as "Roger" later. I thought Roger must be someone we had not seen before, but--when the man appeared in Oregon--he was clearly "Roger". Somebody let that slip!

A Bit Too Many Platitudes
Jackbv1239 April 2020
First, to put this in perspective, know that Merritt Patterson is one of my new favorite Hallmark stars. But this movie did not contribute positively to that viewpoint. I thought she was flat and the chemistry with Steve Lund was meager. Certainly, the character she was playing didn't help. But the idea is supposed to be that her character changes due to love. But other than her soul searching and the conclusions she reaches as a result, that change in character was missing in action.

The story was equally flat. There was very little tension other than the rivalry between old and new boyfriend, and Roger was a dud from the start.

Side note as to production values: with Hallmark, I frequently note some questionable make-up moments. In this one there was one that stood out for me. During the reception, Lacey goes from an almost subtle lipstick, to bright red, and back to the more subtle, all without scene change. I don't know for sure if it was makeup or lighting angles, but the result was notable.

About what you'd expect, another enjoyable Hallmark Christmas movie
jacobs-greenwood10 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Christmas Cottage is a story about coming home, nostalgia, and a love rekindled through the magic of a family cottage, where any couple that spends a night there together will find an everlasting love.

The story begins in San Francisco, where Lacey is a hardworking home designer striving with Roger - also her boyfriend - to land their first big project, a huge multi-million dollar opportunity that will set their firm up for years to come. They've designed a model "living space" that accommodates work and fitness under one roof, a functional home with wall panels that are projected with whatever season or scene the homeowner desires, even adapting the scenery's lighting automatically to owner's sleep patterns.

However, before the deal is closed, Lacey insists to Roger that she must return home to fulfill her maid-of-honor duties for her best friend Ava's wedding, promising him that she'll finish the designs for their proposal to the client while she's away. While that was clearly Lacey's intent, Ava won't have any of it, insisting that her maid-of-honor participate in the activities and tasks over the time leading up to the wedding. This includes decorating the cottage, which has been in Ava's family forever, was a big part of their growing up together, and has the aforementioned legend attached to it.

Enter Ean, Ava's brother, who used to date Lacey before their different worldviews caused their split. While Lacey believed in a life ordered around work, Ean believed relationships - and experiences - were more important. Lacey and Ean grew up together with many shared experiences, with Ava and in the family cottage. Both are creative: Lacey channeled hers through drawings and sketches that were business related, while Ean became a world traveling chef. His running off precipitated the split, and cemented Lacey's belief that he could never "put down roots".

The next day when Lacey goes to decorate the cottage, Ean arrives to help. Whereas she has designated 2 hours to the task, he is in no hurry. Not only does Ean suggest that Lacey "warm" her efficient design idea with more color, he reminds her that there's more to do than she'd planned, like purchase food etc. As evening draws near, it begins to snow such that the two must spend the night in the cabin together, on separate couches near the fireplace when the power goes out. Hence, the cabin's legend is engaged.

Most of the rest of the narrative involves Lacey and Ean reconnecting while reminiscing on what worked in their previous relationship. Of course, the Christmastime atmosphere and some prodding by Ava, who wholeheartedly believes the legend because of its impact on her family since her great grandparents, doesn't hurt. Inevitably, Roger arrives on the scene and the rekindled romance between Ean and Lacey is delayed, but not for long as the story proceeds as expected. The highlights are the wedding toasts, first from Ean and then by Lacey, which are really given about and to each other more than they are for Ava and her now husband Mason.

More giggling
LtlHippo28 December 2019
Why do the Hallmark women giggle so much like they are in middle school? Story was ok, had all the checks marked off the checklist. Just glad it wasn't the standard Lacey/Danica/Candice women again.

Pleasant and enjoyable
charlesvine-7596815 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, it was Hallmark's same tried and true formula, but you know that before watching in most cases. In this instance, Merritt Patterson is the hotshot designer who left her small home town for a designing job in the big city. Upon returning home, she almost immediately runs into her old boyfriend. Her past feelings soon return as does her yearning for the small town life she had in the past but she is tied to her big city boyfriend. After spending a snowbound night in a "magical" cottage, the two old flames reunite for another happy Hallmark ending.

Some actors/actresses just seem to be cut out for casting in these Hallmark feel good movies and this time it's Merritt Patterson. At least in my opinion, Merritt and Jen Lilley are perfectly cast in these roles and are extremely likable, resulting in an enjoyable movie, albeit with the same old premise.

Everlasting love at Christmas
TheLittleSongbird4 January 2020
It was not as if 'The Christmas Cottage' didn't have any potential from the get go or doomed for failure before it even began. It did sound as if it wasn't any different from the usual festive Hallmark formula, albeit with a few tweaks, but it also sounded like a charming and pleasant way, without being much special but never offending, of spending 90 minutes or so. Besides, not every festive Hallmark film is bad, some of them are surprisingly decent.

'The Christmas Cottage' was a case of being neither among the best or worst of them. Somewhere in between more like. It fits the distinction of being a likeable enough diversion that didn't irritate me, but it did contain some major flaws and was nothing special at the end of the day. If asked as to whether it is worth a look, my answer would be a small yes but it is a long way from a must see and more a one-time watch to be seen for festive Hallmark completest sake.

Beginning with the good, 'The Christmas Cottage' looks nice enough. Liked the scenery particularly, which was suitably idyllic. Music in film, television etc. is very important for me to talk about, being a musician, and it has some well chosen tracks and fits nicely. Not over the top or used too much, both of which can be annoyances, while the scoring doesn't come over as too syrupy even if at the end of the day it doesn't stick in the brain for long.

Writing-wise, 'The Christmas Cottage' has its moments. It flows more than other Hallmark Christmas films and doesn't take itself too seriously or too much like a joke. Likewise with the story, which does show signs of a warm heart and charm and is not hard to follow at least. Some sweet enough moments in the romantic chemistry. Merritt Patterson and Britney Wilson are appealing and the supporting cast support them competently.

On the other hand, was less impressed by Steve Lund. He never disappeared into his generically written character and looks quite bored. The romantic chemistry has its moments, though more for Patterson and Wilson, but would have been far more convincing if Lund's performance was much stronger and if it was more plausible as to what they see in him. The direction isn't amateurish but can be a bit by the numbers.

Furthermore, too much of the dialogue is cheesy and lays it on too thick with the schmaltz. The story, even for formula Hallmark, was contrived and in serious need of more creativity, because there is the running out ideas and recycling feel which is quite lazy if you ask me. Something that was more obvious in the pace, which did lack energy at times.

Concluding, not bad but a long way from great. 6/10

Not the best
psu-7462920 July 2021
I watch a ton of Hallmark movies and I especially like the Christmas ones even though they pretty much all follow the same pattern. But in this one there was very little chemistry between the characters of Lacey and Ean. And Ava, the bride, was soooo annoying. She is an adult but acted like a 5 yr old with the constant jumping up and down, giggling, and clapping her hands to show excitement.. it was something that I couldn't even watch.

A Tradition
donschumacher-0120123 July 2022
I've only seen a couple movies with Brittany Wilson in them, but she's a standout as Eva. OK, she's hot. It's unfortunate I haven't seen any where she's the lead.

Yeah the movie's predictable, but the journey is fun. A rustic cabin, roaring fireplace & snow all put you in the Christmas spirit. Nobody's winning an Emmy here, but it's feel-good entertainment. I recommend it highly.

Horribly Written and Wooden Acting

This story is contrived to say the least but the writing, like the acting was lazy. Many details don't make sense. The leads have potential but never realize it.

Too much giggling
bookandcandle28 November 2020
All the actors were great in this heartwarming Christmas story, except for Ava played by Brittney Wilson. She giggled and smiled overtly throughout the entire movie, which became annoying and ruined the movie for me. Act natural, not like a jumping, silly, screaming schoolgirl.

Most Underrated Christmas film
MovieTVRomanceFan8 March 2021
I remember when I first this saw film the previous year when it just popped up on TV. I didn't watch it right from the beginning, but it wasn't long until I really got into it. Finally after recently properly re-watching the film from start to finish I can honestly say it's one of the best feel good Christmas films ever!

The Christmas Cottage is a great movie, instantly making one feel good about themselves almost immediately after watching it. I love the Christmas spirit and atmosphere of the movie and the main couple, Lacey and Ean have excellent chemistry. I also love the storyline on how Lacey begins to let love, life and colour back into her life after being reminded how great it really is and is truly creatively inspired once again. Lacey was all business and no fun in the beginning but gradually she is soon reminded of the magic of Christmas and true love. Plus a Christmas wedding made the movie all the more better for it.

Overall, anyone who sees this film will instantly fall in love with it as I have and it's the best film of the day.

nice
Kirpianuscus22 December 2019
As many Hallmark films, "nice" is the fair word for define it. Because it is exactly a cottage with all eexpected ornaments and furniture and story and with a drop of magic. Romance, sentimental life in low fall, an old friend and a sort of boyfriend and a wedding. All in the familiar package. So, just nice. Against the not convincing acting and saved by secondary characters, the cottage being the first.

Cottaging at Christmas (snigger).
adamjohns-425752 February 2021
I've seen better versions of this story, but it was likeable enough. However, I did not like the lead female, who definitely didn't deserve the lead male. I think she should have stuck with the guy back in the city as they were perfect for each other. It would be nice actually, if just once, they learned something by going home and took it back to the city and corrected their existing relationship instead.

I liked the lead male and hoped he would get a romance that he deserved. I didn't buy that she had changed enough or would be changed for long. Also, the bride was irritating as all hell.

It's ok as these stories go, but put it on your list of films to watch when you've seen the rest.

This is based on a book written by Samantha Chase. The only things that are similar are character names. The rest of the story in the movie is so different from the book. The book was amazing which is why I watched th movie. Bad move Hallmark.

Good acting and great Christmas setting
julia-slrr23 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very typical Hallmark Christmas movie, but that doesn't mean that it's not enjoyable. I actually have DVRed this movie two years in row, because I find it sweet, and fun to watch. Merritt Patterson and Steve Lund have genuine chemistry, and who hasn't had the elegant-vs-fun Christmas tree debate? With the exception of Aunt Sarah hating on white Christmas lights one too many times, this is a solid Christmas choice. Not too cringe-y, just sweet enough, and full of people who seem to enjoy being there. One of my favorites!

Average and predictable...
Thanos_Alfie20 February 2023
"The Christmas Cottage" is a Comedy - Romance movie in which we watch a maid of honor spending the night in the Christmas cottage with the bride-to-be's brother, and everything will change for her and what she believes about love.

I have to admit that I did not have high expectations from this movie so, I was not disappointed by it. The plot was very simple and predictable, something that made the movie a bit boring at some points. The interpretations of Merritt Patterson who played as Lacey Quinn, Steve Lund who played as Ean Callahan and Victor Zinck Jr. Who played as Roger were average and followed the same pattern of the movie with no surprises or something extraordinary. Lastly, I have to say that "The Christmas Cottage" follows the pattern of any romantic Christmas movie so, I advise you to read or watch the trailer before deciding whether or not you want to watch it.

Liked a lot except...
robsuey11 November 2020
I liked MOST everything about this festive movie except for the cheating aspect. Lacy and her boyfriend Roger are an established couple, yet she continues to get involved with her ex-boyfriend Ian more and more each passing day. Instead of being honest with Roger she seems to be sneaking and cheating. This is not a moral value to put across for Hallmark.

Noone cared enough...
niepodam-451331 January 2023
I get the feeling that noone cared enough about this movie to make it stand out in a tinyest bit.

The script is a run of the mill Christmas themed romantic movie. I refuse to call it a comedy cause it doesn't have a single scene that would make you laugh. The main characters are unoriginal and blend. The acting is mediocre. The plot is predictable. The background characters are just there, the groom has like 5 lines in a movie that revolves around his wedding. The other couple that hangs out with the bride, groom and the main characters doesn't say a single word and noone says a word to them.

Also the locations seem really empty. The lighting of the tree which is supposed to be a big deal for the town has like 20 people around. The Christmas fare is the same. Talking about budget cuts.

You can give it a try, but I guess you won't remember it in about 10 minutes.
