Loved It

Best thing I've ever seen Stallone in. The supporting cast is brilliant and well chosen, especially Garret Hedlund, Jay Will & Martin Starr and The writing is comical and I've a few lol moments I like it's the story so far. I love the dry humor, Stallone trying to figure out life on the outside after 25 years. But also, despite the technological advancements, he also, within the first 2 episodes, see why he was an established Capo, back in the day. The driving test cracked me up.

I'll watch pretty much anything Sheridan puts out there, and so far, I haven't been let down. Starting Mayor of Kingstown tomorrow.

It Feels Fresh: Really Entertaining First Episode
panagiotis199324 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I never expected that I would watch a tv show with a 76 year old Stallone but here I am. Going back to a life of crime after 25 years in prison is definitely interesting. Stallone's acting is hilarious in a good way, I like his vibe. The interaction with the cab driver was hilarious. The whole scene in the cbd shop was super funny. And now the cab driver will be his new driver? I expect some hilarious moments from these two, love it. Dwight really needs a smartphone asap lol. I love that he wasted no time getting to know the people of Tulsa, finding new allies.

Even Stallone eating an ice cream is entertaining to me haha. The woman rejecting him for being too old was kinda harsh but I get it. The woman works for the police? What a twist! ''From this point on, this city and everything in it belongs to me'' Great way to end the episode. Dwight is a lonely criminal, old-fashioned with a very cool attitude. Stallone does a great job portraying the character. I will definitely watch the rest of the season. Great introduction and first episode overall, it feels fresh. My rating is 8.5/10.

Good, It Gets the Job Done, Slightly Flawed

Dwight Manfredi, a capo of the New York Mafia, is released from prison after serving 25 years and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma, by his boss. Although the idea isn't very original-after all, we've seen stories like this before-considering it's created by Taylor Sheridan, one of my favourite television directors currently, I was very much looking forward to watching it. Although "Tulsa" falls short of my expectations, it is too soon to cast judgement, and there is time for improvement. In contrast to his other works, Sheridan's "Tulsa" seems to lack his trademark style or pacing. Stallone looks tailor-made for the role, and the rest of the cast is decent, but the episode felt somewhat underwhelming. The opener isn't bad, but it could have been done with more polish.

Rating: 7.0/10.

Finally Sly as a Gangster, Sorry Industrialist!!!!!!
irishmen698113 November 2022
I'm glad Stallone is able to prove any and every person wrong that said he didn't look Italian enough or didn't have a Mafia look to play a Mafia character. This 1st episode made me think of the beginning of every Grand Theft Auto game when the character starts to build an empire. I like the little funny parts that make you think he's lost his mind but easily shows you that he's been in prison for 25 years. This has the makings to be a great show. I just hope the higher ups don't screw up a good thing for us viewers. Congratulations Stallone to a great start and hopefully more seasons to come.

My Jury Is Out

I can usually tell after the first episode if a series is going to be good and if I'm going to like it, however with 'Tulsa King,' I'm just not sure.

Stallone is absolutely perfect for the role. Taylor Sheridan has a great, but not perfect, track record. Some of the producers, directors and actors are from 'The Sopranos' and 'Boardwalk Empire.' All really good Indicators.

The premier is funny and the premise is unique. My problem is, can they develop this premise and make it work without being cheesy, dumbed-down, or worse, ludicrous.

But I gave it a solid 8 and I'm looking forward to seeing what develops.

Better than expected
thevegastourist-0122 December 2022
Ok, its a television show with Sly Stallone in it. So from the start you know reality has no part of the writing or production.

You should also know is that I have NEVER been a fan of anything Mr. Grunt has ever done. Ever.

So to see that he made a TV series made me wonder just how desperate Netflix has become for shows or Sly needing to be in the press again.

With all that said, I was presently surprised in his ability to actually act and see that he can read a script that has more then 3 words in it!

Yes, most of his actions are very stiff (all those years of hanging out in jungles and fighting in a ring can do that to a guy) and his one liners are all delivered with deadpan accuracy, makes this an enjoyable show to watch.

Yes, it has violence in it. It is a Sly Stallone show after all. Yes, some of the scenes make no sense and why Tulsa? Remember, this is a Sly Stallone show so its not suppose to make sense.

Watch it for the pure entertainment value of it!

In the end, I would have to say this is one of the better "fish out of water" shows I have seen in a long time and looking forward to watching more.

Surprisingly Sly!
nicktusk-9559116 March 2023
Tulsa King . Following Slys social media you see him in shape , gray hair , wearing suits and ties . Like wtf is Stallone up to . Pretty much watch his new series and it reintroduces you to the old Rocky , Rambo , Cliffhanger cliche, but wait a minute , except you guessed it , a ex mafioso. Some familiar faces . Also writers and directors. Taylor Sheridan , hmmm hell or high water ? Sicario ? Also Allen Coulter ? Terrance Winter . Sounds suspiciously like some old Sopranos Writer and director . Lol Then we see Max Casella aka Benny the criminal mastermind. You can see where I'm going with this. So far, I'll be honest I am shockingly blown away of how good I think this series will be. And how good it is so far! Enjoy.

Sly and the Family...
gensbill21 November 2022
Sure, the business aspects of the show along with his takeover of the weed store strain credulity. I don't think I have ever seen a movie or a series where the writer understands what's involved in laundering money -- the mechanics of how it's done and the resulting hit to the aggregate dollar figure of what needs to be cleaned by the process used. Heck, neither did the guys from the neighborhood back in the day.

Yet, Sly must have done some hanging out with Caan, Chazz Palminteri, Burt Young, and the made guys at il Boschetto in the Bronx because he has the attitude, mannerisms, and style of the successful guys who survived their youth.

Simply said, Stallone is great, and the show is well worth the watch. I've only seen episode one but if they don't ruin it with wokeness and political propaganda I think it will be a "can't miss."

I know I'm not going to miss it.

Go West, Old Man
Prismark1018 November 2022
Sylvester Stallone enters the world of comedy drama in Tulsa King.

Creator Taylor Sheridan takes time out of his Yellowstone franchise and goes a bit lighter.

In the opener Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is a mafia lieutenant who has spent the last 25 years in jail. He took the fall for his New York mafia don and kept his mouth shut.

He has lost his liberty and his family. Now he expects his reward after being released from prison.

Instead the new don has exiled Dwight to Tulsa, Oklahoma to build up a criminal empire there. It feels like a road to nowhere for Dwight.

Soon as he lands in Tulsa. Dwight befriends the taxi driver and takes 20 percent of the takings from a legalised cannabis pharmacy.

There are rich pickings in the new frontier and Dwight is going to seize it. There are storm clouds ahead though. Rival gangsters and the FBI.

For Stallone this is an attempt to be a tough guy and a fish out of water comedy. He is a 75 year old man in a world of mobile phones, apps, Uber and legal drugs being sold.

The first episode plays to his strengths. Tough but also surprisingly tender. Dwight is a driven man who is going to show his New York bosses that he should had been treated better.

It does take a bit of swallowing that Dwight is shocked by lega drug pharmacies but knows about who owns the drug farms. Also that there is no organised crime once you leave the big cities.

Has Dwight never watched Yellowstone in prison?

Intriguing setup to the series
grantss20 May 2024
After 25 years in prison, New York Mafia capo Dwight Manfredi has been released. He is expecting a reward from his boss for not rolling over on them but instead finds that time didn't stand still while he was inside. His boss and friend, the man who he can rely on to look after him, is now only nominally in power. His son makes all the decisions and doesn't view Dwight as favourably as his father. He sends Dwight to Tulsa, Oklahoma, as he views it as an untapped market. Dwight has nothing: he is going to have to build a crew and the Mafia's presence in Tulsa from the ground up.

I initially wasn't interested in this series but once I noticed the writers behind it, many of whom were involved with The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, I gave it a go. After one episode I'm glad I did though it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

Episode 1 is an interesting, intriguing start to the series. We see Dwight's backstory, his personal sacrifices and how he is treated, the dynamic with the other Mafia senior members.

His initial steps into setting up a Tulsa operation are quite entertaining (though not entirely plausible).

Not sure how I feel about Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. I know he's there for his star status but I kept thinking he's way too old for this. Turns out that's the look the producers are going for: he's literally playing his age!

Overall, a good start and I'll be back for Episode 2.

Stupid and lazy writing
wagnercol21 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sheridan is being presented as some kind of master story teller, and at one time he may have been. Unfortunately Tulsa King is simply thr latest of a string of stupid premises supported by lazy writing. Old gangster gets out of prison after 25 years and proceeds to piss off all of the new guard in his old gang, punches one of them and walks out alive. Ok, if you say so. Goes to Tulsa where he just happens to meet the one cab driver who is morally ambivalent enough to help him. They drive by a marijuana dispensary and he decides to just walk in and take over. Sure, whatever. Then he appoints his cabbie as his official driver and gives him 50k cash to buy an SUV, which he can't because the dealership thinks he's a drug dealer (not to mention that a transaction that size would require to be reported) so the Tulsa King punches the owner and the deal is done. Whatever. Then he hooks up with a woman who's out on some kind of hen party who just happens to be an ATF agent. Now you are just wasting my time.

This is just bad story telling and sad, lazy writing. And across the Sheridanverse it is just getting worse. I won't be wasting any more of my time on something this contrived going forward.

Okay...ish
esma-2244715 November 2022
I'm a big fan of Mr. Sheridan. At the same time, there were some really big problems in this pilot.

Dwight strong-arms a legal weed dispensary. And the owner? He basically shrugs. It's a legal business so the owner is entitled to local police protection. But here, the owner just agrees to hand over 20% of his income. Why on earth would a businessman, even a stoned one, do that? There are about ten thousand smarter way to leverage him.

Dwight doesn't know what an iPhone is but he knows that grow farms (that became legal when he was in prison) are fronts for cartels. Okaaay. They hit this one on the head a lot, he's a fish out of water. Except that fish out of water has to be startled by the changes and slyly adapt. Can't be both a fish out of water and someone who knows the underside of a system. Pick one.

Every problem is solved by a punch and a wad of 100s with no consequences. Lacks nuance of the really good mob shows *coughSOPRANOS*. Made Dwight feel very one-dimensional. That's usually the function of family or surrounding characters to draw out that other side of the character but here, all Dwight has is a sometimes-around driver. I realize it takes time to build that universe but if you watch other pilots, like Yellowstone, you see it fully fleshed out in the pilot so viewers are already attached and don't have to wait.

Was this just fast-tracked or is no one giving Mr. Sheridan notes now?

Episode 1
bobcobb30130 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A little bit of traditional mob stuff, a little bit of comedy thrown in, this is exactly the kind of show Paramount+ needs. Not the strongest start, kind of like Yellowstone, one of the other Taylor Sheridan series, it is going to take a little while to get going, but there is enough here to stick with it.

Sly Stallone doing a regular TV role is a good get, and seems to be trying with this role. He is never going to deliver a Masterpiece Theatre quality acting performance, but I also feel like he is surprisingly believable in this role.

This show will surely be a hit and I guess I can say deservedly so.

Old Man chasing his youth
Pritchie451 February 2023
Sly Stallone is a wonder to watch in a long form medium. His talents are put to great use in this tv series however the plot surround it hinder hims. Seeing a 75 year old man sleeping around distracts from what I thought would be a story of an old dog being taught new tricks. The gangster element is rushed and unbelievable because of its modern day setting. I have no idea how a man can just walk up to a dispensary and just get access to all the accounting and take 20 percent all by himself.

Other than the plot I like the side characters and the world surrounding this old gangsta. His driver, the bar and it's patrons are inviting. Less romance, more family, more business, and a slower building of how relationships with gangs are formed is what I'm hopeful for after this mediocre episode. One person doesn't make a gang, show us the engine that allows him to be confident with his action and how he doesn't suffer any consequences for his illegal activities.

Lazy writing: too unrealistic. Entertaining though
JustHavingALook9 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The premise was solid. What happens after 25 years spent in prison, with no life and the world changed?

Stallone playing a mafioso in his twilight years is an excellent choice.

Locations wise: smart decision to be in the middle of nowhere. Not only it helps to keep the budget in check but gives the illusion of some kind of originality.

Unfortunately the writing is sloppy and unrealistic, dialogues made me mostly uncomfortable / cringe.

The story moves on with Stallone using his hands with pretty much everyone he doesnt like (his mob family, weed dispensary guard, a car's dealer, club client) and no consequences!

Entertaining: heck yes! Stupid? You bet.

The mob family would have him whacked in no time, the weed store owner would have called the cops, as well as the car dealership. But never mind, since our good old Stallone doesnt ever flinch.

It's just lazy writing. The scene of the mob reunion is particularly bad. Acting, blocking, dialogue and camera movements made my head spin.

Also: not even clear what Stallone character wants. Money? Recognition? A family?

The rest of the cast is flat/one dimensional.

Cannot recommend it.

Not "The Sopranos" That's For Sure
robbenn6921 November 2022
When I saw the promos for this show, I was excited to see an older Stallone embracing his heritage, and playing a mobster. I cannot believe he has never played one before this show. He certainly looks the part of a Mafia goombah. The premise of the show is that after spending 25 years in prison and keeping his oath of Omerta, Stallone's character, Dwight David Manfredi has nothing to return to. His wife divorced him, his daughter disowned him, and his Borgata aka Mafia Family has moved on. They suggest he go to Tulsa, OK and start some kind of organized crime syndicate there. Why Tulsa? I don't know. It is an odd choice of Western cities to send him to. It looked like an ironic, comedic Sopranos in the New West. I thought it was an interesting concept. However, it doesn't work, at least the way it is currently written. First off, no Italian family would name their kid Dwight David (after General Eisenhower). The very concept of an Italian Mafioso with a name like Dwight is laughable. Italians from the generation of Dwight's parents would only choose a Catholic saint's name for their son. Then the concept that he comes out of 25 years in prison not knowing about anything of the present day is ridiculous. He doesn't know about Uber or smartphones? Did no one from his crew ever visit him? Was there no TV in the prison that the inmates watched? The next stupid thing is that he bullies and threatens the legal pot dealer into paying him extortion money. Why didn't the pot dealer just call the police? His product is legal and his business legitimate. The minute Dwight left, I would be on the phone to the cops. Yet, Dwight goes around assaulting and beating up everyone yet no one calls the cops. Here's another stupid bit of writing: He askes the lady at the front desk of his motel to call him a cab and she says they don't have cabs, just Uber. That is nonsense! Tulsa, like most places, has some form of taxicab service. How did they survive before Uber? Dumb. The only redeeming quality is Stallone. He plays the Italian mobster role very well. The show has a lot of promise but the writing needs to be better. The dialog is completely unrealistic, the supporting characters are uninspired, boring stereotypes and the situations Dwight and Tyson get into are ridiculous. I hope it gets better.
