When horror-ambience is done right!
MyGodThesePeople29 December 2019
I'm a great fan of the podcast, TMG. Thus, I was very excited to see that Noel Miller had published his first short film with a semi-professional production.

What really stood out to me was the emotional ambience during the action scenes. The police raid and eerie distress caused by Suki's crimes worked really well with the dystopian music theme and almost psychedelic visual editing. In generel, the visuals were quite pleasing and exciting throughout the entire run-time.

However, I found the dialog to be a bit stiff and emotionless. I don't think it matched well with the themes in the film. I also think that more could have been done to establish Suki's character. It did not have to be much but a bit more character development could have been done quite inexpensively (monetarily and creativly wise).

With that being said: I really enjoyed it. Taking into consideration that it is Noel Miller's first short film. I attend film school in Denmark. A lot of submissions at school are far less impressive than Suki. I will definitely pass this around to my fellow film enthusiasts.

Keep at it! You have got the talent, Miller!

This was an experience unlike no other. Noel's directing debut was something out of a fever dream. Good stuff, dude. Dark comedies are in right now!

Great first impression with room for improvement
gwynethc29 December 2019
My immediate reaction when watching was to notice the incredible cinematography, it is really very well filmed and edited and it has an aesthetic appeal you don't see in million dollar productions. However, while I see a meaning beyond the basic scenes, I feel the characters could be more developed through dialogue or some sort of backstory. I would describe it as a snapshot from a longer film, and I would love to see a larger storyline in the future.

Overall an amazing first short film, good job to Noel (and cast and crew), hopefully we'll see even more from you in the future! :)

Disappointing
davidcarlos-4505929 December 2019
I just want to say that I don't think many people could do better with a first short film with the budget it had.

I think this movie looks incredible and I think there was a lot of hard work and thought put into it.I thought some of the visual jokes were funny and the overall idea was pretty cool.

But on that note I think there's a lot that this fails to do.The dialog is pretty awful and the tone was just all over the place.I know that he said that he was okay with the pacing but I just don't agree.i think the some scenes went on for too long.i don't think there was need for the 20 seconds of the detective walking around the desert.I Also Feel as the editing was a bit off.In the podcast Noel mentioned that he was very inspired by "The end of the fu#*^% world" but I really don't see it. Overall I don't think you wasted your money if you decided to contribute in the go fund me .If for some reason you haven't seen it yet and decided to read this review first definitely go watch it and form your own opinion.

Close to perfect

It's not completely like Death Note, but I still like it. It has some niche details that make me remember it, but yeah, ryuk wasn't there, L was missing. Didn't see a single apple. But overall, good movie.

Stunning, gripping and straight up fun.
lollospre29 December 2019
An amazing ensemble of Tarantinoesque gory scenes and typical Noel Miller humour, I can't quite decide whether I'm more amazed by the stunning visuals (especially considering the budget) or the gripping plot. In just 10 minutes of short movie you get thoroughly attached to the characters (albeit in a weird, twisted way) and can't help but wonder what's gonna happen to Suki? Why is she doing this? Amazing cinematography, great acting particularly by the main character, and again, amazing cinematography. This movie is beautiful.

Directed well, story needs some work
wbuttle13 May 2020
Being a fan of the TMG podcast and pretty much anything Noel Miller and Cody Ko do, I thought I'd check this short movie out. Overall, I thought it was quite for a YouTuber short film. The direction was surprisingly good and was shot pretty well with lighting and the overall tone was solid and consistent.

My only real concern with the film is the story, I like the idea of this innocently looking women being a serial killer, it's a funny horror movie story. But there isn't really any development. I understand how it can be quite hard with the runtime to really create a true character arc, and if they decide to make a feature length movie, it might be something they work on. But does need work.

Overall, I think they have potential. I've always said very few YouTuber's would be able to make the jump from YouTube to making working in a movie or TV business and I think Noel Miller and Cody Ko could do that, some of the very few that could.

Tough First Attempt
ericchapman-1803316 February 2020
It has to be taken into consideration that this is Noel's first project. He demonstrated an eye for captivating shots and vibrant lighting which is great to see.

This being said, the plot was unclear, the comedy was forced, and no characters demonstrated any growth throughout the short. It seemed like Noel felt obligated to include comedic dialogue which diluted the plot, and made certain characters unlikable.

Definitely a tough first attempt, but I am excited to other projects coming from him soon.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know why, but while watching this it just made me like suki. it made me like think she's a badass but also a little scared of her because she doesn't seem to talk the whole time and i don't understand her kill pattern yet. I love this short film though one of my favorites.

a promising directorial debut, but story needs serious work
evanjustrocks6 January 2020
I love noel miller. i have a huge amount of respect for him and it is clear that he is extremely passionate about this project.

that said, i am reviewing this subjectively. suki is well shot, but lies pretty empty in character development and storyline. who is suki? why does she kill? its not a sin to leave questions unanswered in films, but this seems more careless than an artistic choice.

this film doesn't try to get very deep, and i respect that. but in a film about a killer, i would suggest to focus more on them than suki does.

Suki was well worth the wait. Every shot was gorgeous, the score was hauntingly perfect. I might be a bit biased as a fan of Noel, but I sincerely think Suki is a masterpiece.

Horror in Broad Daylight
relleumlehcar29 December 2019
This movie is a stunning contrast between dark, gore filled shots of death and beautiful sunlit nature. The seemingly normalcy of the killings and how bold Suki moves is chilling. The cinematography is beyond what the budget affords and is the most beautiful film I've seen in 2019.

A confusing amount of fluff with little to no substance.
quincywolfe27 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted this short film to be good! I had been following it with Noel's updates and progress on how the film was turning out but sadly, I'm quite disappointed. The direction of Suki seems to be all over the place at times and watching this short several times, it felt like the director(s) were even confused on where it was going. This short is labeled as a dark comedy, but the "comedy" just doesn't fit and even goes on too long. I love the way this film looks, and the sounds and music give off an incredible atmosphere; the music alone delivers great story telling and it makes me very happy seeing the utilization of expressing what is going on without having explicit narration. With that being said, the story is nonetheless, very hard to follow. The audience is not given enough information about Suki, or any of the characters. The most troubling issues were that the questions of why she kills people, or how she continuously manages to evade capture were never answered.

The story leaves bits and pieces of things unresolved to the point of creating plot-holes and inconsistency. The conclusion of the short feels extremely rushed; the ending also manages to create even further confusion regarding Suki's motives for killing the detective as he was already off the case? I want to understand the character Suki, but I can't help but feel like we were dropped into a film at the very end. I understand that this is a short film, and I understand that this was Noel's first, but going forward I would recommend slowing down, understanding the direction you want to go, and focus on building a comprehensible story and not so much on the visual aesthetics. This film had moments that I thought were shot extremely well, and I might even be bold enough to say that this film would've done better if there was no dialog at all.

A miss
tbmountford4 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't really understand most of the decisions made in this short. The scenes all occur in a disconnected sequence that provides little context to what is happening. Suki is never really given traits except for being slippery? We know that they cannot find her but we are never shown why or how she keeps getting away. The policeman character raids the wrong building but why? Did suki lead them there? Did they just get the address wrong? And then the following scene he is at the correct building with no context given as to how he found it. The only thing that there is real set up for is the blender which is introduced and then never paid off. The only character who really speaks is the main police man and he just says a collection one liners that don't make sense. He goes on about the format and publishing company of the book that he thinks will inevitably be written about him and then says that "college students will eat it up" are college students notorious for liking True crime novels? And then he makes the weak comparison to Yoko Ono which just doesn't land. "Yoko ono but instead of killing bands she kills people" yikes. There is also the fake out moment where he almost catches Suki at the right house but for the sake of dramatic tension they change the time of day twice within the police officers shots. When it starts it is the late afternoon and then it's pitch black when he enters the cabin and then late afternoon again when he leaves. The montage of news paper headlines also strikes me as odd. The headlines are all supposed to be funny? But the attempts at puns come at the expense of realism when depicting a realistic news story. Not to mention that the premise of a massive scandal arising from the police investigating an incorrect lead seems unrealistic to me. My theory is that the creators had in mind a collection of aesthetically pleasing shots and a passing familiarity with Quentin Tarantino, but no real desire to tell a meaningful story with motivations and plot. It's not even clear to me why Suki unceremoniously stabs the disgraced police man on his lawn. There are witnesses and a huge amount of blood on her and on the lawn. Are we supposed to believe she gets away with it? And why did she do it at all? Since she has no established motivation it's unclear if she is seeking revenge or trying to stop him from investigating any further. This was bad. I cannot lie. Sorry Noel

Absolutely excellent. Super creepy and kept me glued to the screen the whole time. I mean just wow. Not a huge fan of this guy, comedy channels aren't really my thing, but I hope he keeps on doing stuff like this.

First off, the obvious, it was so well shot. The coloring and filmography was so appealing. The comedy in the movie was subtle and not overdoing it. I personally think it fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the film without feeling like each joke was taking you out of it.

i still love you noel
khoneygosky28 December 2019
Noel, I love you so much and you're an incredible person, which is why this hurts me so much. The skill you truly have deep down and your ambition to be a great filmmaker shines through very bright no doubt. That being said, this just didn't hit me how I wanted it to.

First, I would like to point out the one thing that worked perfectly. The cinematography was interesting and just beautiful. The stark contrasts between colors in each scene and each montage is almost the only reason to keep watching. One more smaller detail I absolutely loved was the v.o. while we were shown several articles detailing the raid.

Now for the things that didn't work so well. The story line and the dialogue. I don't even know where to start. It was apparent the moment the words, "Now remember, she's a nightmare" came out of that god awful actor's mouth. It felt like I was watching a 5 year olds passion project. Not to mention that there was a very small amount of information on any of the characters, and there wasn't any character development. I get that 12 minutes isn't a lot of time to portray an entire story, but it is essential to try.

The last thing I would like to talk about is the editing. Noel, I'm assuming, has gotten most of his practice from editing youtube videos. Judging from his other content alone, you would assume that he is a pretty experienced and skilled editor. However that does not come across in Suki. It feels like an attempt to be artistic and creative that unfortunately failed. The sheer amount of crossfades made my skin crawl. It made an already fast-paced film feel even faster and at certain points, very cluttered.

All in all, please go watch Suki. While I may have just criticized it for entirely too long, Noel Miller is a great guy, and for his first short film, funded by gofundme, it's pretty damn impressive. I'm excited for the next one.

Purely Mediocre.
badyaka-5011729 December 2019
Noel Miller shot out with a bang with his first professional short film. With this sense of professionality comes these new responsibilities to uphold. For the most part, Noel keeps this up with continuous story and little to no dark patches, but he also makes several mistakes that should not be done with a work of art on this level as "Suki" is. I am not saying that there are no bad things about the short film, it is shot very well, the contrast of colors and the brightness of Suki's clothing compared to every other character shows herself as a more "out there" person. The special effects are done well, there isn't much to say about that. The main problem, and hardest to avoid is the writing. There is a plethora of plot holes in this film, but one can expect this in a short film thats about 9 minutes. Still, the writers should have avoided as many of these as possible. Another thing that was very annoying were the characters. Suki's character was fine, but everyone else was very hard to like and support (especially the detective). Some smaller thing that annoyed me was the dialogue. If someone told me it was from Kill Bill Vol. 3's leaked script, i would believe it. This film feels very kill bill-ey. The plot differs most of the time, but still manages to go back to its blatant inspiration.

I would like to end this review off with a good note. The ambience and the settings were exceptionally chosen. I like where this is going, but Noel and his future teams need to tighten up the loose ends. It is especially stressful to do these short films with an audience of over a half a million people watching it and criticizing it. All in all, "Suki" directed by Noel Miller combines a block buster horror concept with House Cinematographic elements. Neither of these elements overpower the other, and it leaves the whole experience, just meh.

an outstanding debut from this director
josuematlopez29 December 2019
Not to say that i ever doubted noel miller's ability to deliver a decent production, but suki really went beyond my expectations. xinyi cui killed it as suki. her performance and the ambience created by the cinematography and sound design made a character that could have turned out one-dimensional and flat interesting and striking. every aesthetic aspect of the film, from the color grading to the music, was memorable and stunning. these choices weren't made to create pointless aesthetic value, to have edits of the movie made by fans who simply liked how it looked. it was purposeful, creating a haunting atmosphere around suki, and enhancing the great mystery that she is. it is surprisingly funny ('i thought the whole point of being a mathlete is that you get beat up all the time'), delivering a rare form of horror comedy. where other films of the genre play down and relish in their gore, 'suki' acknowledges and gives weight to its violence. where others would forget the comedic aspect and simply have a festival of blood on screen, 'suki' finds time to slide humor, which for the most part don't harm the tone of the film. the script is not too strong at times, but this short film is mostly effective, short and sweet, and an astounding debut for noel miller.

Meh
SimonsRants7 February 2020
I'm a big fan of Noel Miller's comedy and after seeing some of his work directing TMG music videos I was excited for a more serious turn by him as a director. And I have to say, the cinematography was compelling, Noel certainly has an eye for art. Unfortunately, that was the only good thing about it. The story was completely lackluster, the tone was off putting and uneven, the acting wasn't professional - which, to be fair, should be expected - and the overall project was only okay at best. It's under 15 minutes long, but I was bored by it in that short amount of time. The biggest encouragement Noel should take out of this is that his talent for directing was evident. It was raw and needs some honing, but he has a lot of potential.
