racism will be done

Warning: Spoilers
1. Alfred gets free clothes 2. Darius eats jollof rice 3. Earl and Van stay at a hotel

This episode was interesting. For a larger part, it took a jab at non-profits, particularly black-led ones of how they were exploiting the guilt and the racial topics. This felt particularly apt given the controversy surrounding the BLM nonprofit organization as well. I think that ANY nonprofit for any purposes should be carefully scrutinized as they can really just help those who lead it, rather than the ones they intended to help. But again, it's a difficult space to navigate because everybody has to eat, got ulterior motives, and exploitation is rampant both ways. Alfred's involvement with the leaders of these nonprofit orgs were hilarious and honestly Brian Henry always pulls off the role perfectly.

Outside of that, we see Darius' disgust with how a white person took over the traditional Naija restaurant and gentrified it. It does feel wrong on many levels but this happens so frequently that it's not even surprising anymore. We also get to see more development between Earn and Van's relationship after how Earn got Van out of trouble and got a free stay at a fancy hotel using his newfound skills as a manager. But I don't know why they did our girl Van dirty like that by indicating that she actually stole the wig. I feel like she's been reduced a lot in this season and been hindered her potential as a character. At this point, she's just like a confused floater that has little impact on the overall story. It feels like a waste of a character. I guess that could indicate her character development because she is indeed a complex character who seems to be going through self image issues. I just wish they spent more time on her.

Not the best of the season

Warning: Spoilers
Overall this is an excellent season but this episode wasn't the best. As a previous review noted, it's a bit preachy and obvious. The Naija food thread with Darius was the highlight - but I was confused, he wanted Jollof but ended up ordering Moin-Moin? Acting is always on-par in the show. It's a bit cynical, this episode.

Eh...

The commentary is too obvious for a clever show like Atlanta, it felt like they were preaching at me. The absurd plot doesn't really work here, in my opinion. As always, the acting is great. I liked Darius's small adventure.

This season has kinda been lacking. I don't know man, it feels like something that would have come out in that weird ass George Floyd-era mediascape.

As a Nigerian, I loved this

Atlanta has it's history of making good, thoughtful episodes. I loved how this episode focused on each character of the gang and also , I loved the correct Nigerian representation in the restaurant scene too...

How can you not find jollof rice in London?

If you're going to make a plot where your characters go to another country and introduce this wild new exciting thing to the locals, maybe don't make that thing be something you can already buy on every street there. Mimi's restaurant has that Uber Eats hookup you know? You don't have to go out on a special trip just to find it.

Neither good nor bad. Just disappointing.

Not convinced by this one. I think it's the low point of the season so far (I actually quite like the anthology/side episodes that most others seem to be a bit sceptical of). This one felt like an episode of a tired sitcom - the kind of fare you might see in season 8 or 9 of Frasier or Friends where each character goes off on a little adventure before a very obvious moral materialises semi-abruptly out of nowhere at the end of each of their mini-arcs.

It all feels too simplistic and unrealistic to me. Just rewatch the press confence scene: Paper Boi tries to be vocal about what he really thinks and then gets cut over and "rescued" very unsubtly; the audience seems not to notice anything strange, instead, they rise up to clap ecstatically at the on brand, blatant corporate nonsense spewed by those sharing Al's platform. That's not how audiences, especially ones composed of journalists, behave in real life. I use this small example, but I could use many others. There is a tackiness that runs through the whole episode. Give me an invisible car any day, but mawkish writing, regardless of the correctness of the morals, isn't why I'm interested in art.

Cancer Attack remains the season high so far.
