AMAZING! OLD FLASH VIBES!
mysticalviper-665365 December 2018
Please please give this episode a watch !! I have never an episode of TV with a milestone episode as good as this. Scenes with the old Harrison Wells might have been some of the best in the entire series. Not a long review but please give it a shot.

The Timeline is Malleable
ThomasDrufke5 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So here's the thing, I have spent the last 7 weeks of this show bashing its lack of guts and originality because it has been nothing short of awful this year. But if they go through with what I hope they are going to do in the second half (and what this episode set up) then I will have made a complete 180 on this season. As I'm sure most of you did as well, as soon as Sherloque Wells said "Clever girl" to Nora, something clicked in my mind. I immediately wrote down in my notes, "what if Sherloque is secretly Eobard Thawne undercover once again?". Not that it makes any sort of logical sense, but something felt off about that moment. And it's not at all like they revealed what I wrote down to be true, but Thawne did in fact appear, and is working with Nora herself! Or at least it sure seems like it.

This completely changes my outlook on this season. To me, you can't possibly have this just be a throwaway moment that will only play out for a few episodes. Now, you have to find a way to make Thawne the main villain of this season once again, and yes, push Cicada aside. Does this mean that Thawne gave Nora the idea to send Barry back in time to somehow help his cause, or could it be that because Nora and Barry went back in time tonight and Thawne found out her name, that he somehow recruited/convinced her in the future to work with him in some way? It's this type of Back to the Future time travel that is both fascinating and terribly confusing. Either way, it's ten times more interesting to watch it play out like this then to us go through a similar arc with Cicada every single week.

So back to the episode itself, it was a cool idea to have the 100th episode deal with Barry going back in time to find parts of their villains past to build a device to stop Cicada. I'll admit it's annoying that it's Cicada they are doing it for, but still, I was constantly entertained, and I loved that it didn't spend too much time in any one particular year. And come on, wasn't it pretty cool watching the accelerator go off and show each person or group of people that it impacted with dark matter? The only part that felt anticlimactic was the Cicada fight. I really would have loved for that fight to feel final, and then we just move right on to Thawne for the second half. Oh well.

Overall, this was the best episode this show has given us since, what like season 2? (aside from the crossovers that is). But seriously, I loved this episode and what it may mean for the season going forward. Reinvigorated!

I don't understand...
garabedian1235 December 2018
How can this 100th episode be of so much higher quality and written so much better than any of the CW shows or Flash episodes. I mean wow. Where are they keeping the good writers that they only use every once in a while. This episode raised the bar.

An Instant Classic
dcolyer6 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
When I found out Todd Helbing was one of the writers for this episode, and Tom Cavanagh was the director, I was pretty confident we would get a good episode. I was hesitant to consider that we may get a great episode since those have been in short supply since season 3; however, that is exactly what we got.

Todd Helbing is one of the best and most prolific writers of great The Flash episodes. It's no wonder he is The Flash's Showrunner. It's just unfortunate that he can't write them all. Oftentimes when he pens an episode, we get a classic with just the right recipe, such as this episode. Its quality above the other seven episodes of season 5 is starkly noticeable, and it's in another league than almost all of the season 4 episodes. It seems, more than any other writer for The Flash, Helbing "gets it"; I only wish the other writers and story editors would get it too.

This episode was not perfect, but man it was good. There was no cartoonish-ness, no lame attempts to make the show a faux-comedy; no soap-opera drama; it was just another excellent episode that contained just the right level octane. One could argue that the reuse of old clips from prior seasons was nothing more than a cheap way to rehash those moments and steal from the glory days of the show, but I think this misses the mark. Time travel is a trademark of The Flash comics, and even though something similar has been done in film and TV before, this episode did it with the same flair and uniqueness that has made the show endure for five seasons, and to great effect. It could have been poorly done, but it wasn't. Helbing, Cavanagh, and company charged back into the rich history of The Flash with great passion and reverence, and it paid off nicely. It was fascinating to see Barry and Nora become flies on the wall as seminal events played out in Barry's past. The way Gustin and Kennedy played these roles as largely unobtrusive observers was spot on.

When they got to Thawne, an already solid episode suddenly exploded into brilliance as Cavanagh reanimated his legendary role. The script was powerful, but so was the powerful acting of the three players Gustin, Kennedy, and Cavanagh. The episode was firing on all cylinders here. As Julian might say: "Brilliant!"

The scene in the time vault with Thawne, Barry, and Nora was certainly one of the tensest and more commanding scenes than we've seen on The Flash in a very long time. It was refreshing to see. It reminded me of how the show used to make me feel on a pretty regular basis during seasons 1-3. Remember when we used to feel this way almost every other episode on The Flash?

This week again, Blake Neely and Nathaniel Blume did a fantastic job with the musical score. They found a sweet spot, updating classic score pieces from the early seasons, evoking comfort and fondness from earlier episodes, yet making them fresh at the same time. The score added just the just the right touch to make the scenes sparkle. Bravo.

I only have a couple of things that in my mind that kept the episode from being even greater. The most glaring thing was the appearance of the speedsters when traveling through time. In my opinion, the fake running needs to be replaced with the players actually running (I noticed Cavanagh did this for the race between Nora and Barry, and it looked great). Surely this cannot be more expensive to do this? This was one of the good little subtle things about season 1: Gustin actually ran then, and it just looked so much better.

The other point is minor. I felt great satisfaction when the team had, for all intents and purposes, defeated Cicada. It feels so good to see Barry win. But then, victory was snatched away once again, only to see Cicada escape. It seems it might have been a bit more fulfilling for the audience to actually see Barry and his team defeat Cicada and take him into custody. This would have given everyone a great sense of victory (and then in the back half, perhaps he could have escaped; it's not as if meta-humans haven't escaped from custody before). I think it's important to let Barry win, but I can live with how it went down. It was cool to see that Cicada is not so easily defeated. This did have a way of letting us know that he is quite powerful beyond what Barry and his team imagined. Cisco cannot be faulted for thinking he had sufficiently breached the dagger. The true connection between Cicada and that dagger was a surprise both to Team Flash and the audience.

The ending of the episode certainly suppressed any minor, nit-picky qualms I had with the episode. We already had suspicions that Nora was working with someone, and the ending of the episode slammed it into our faces in a powerful way. This was the best cliff hanger in a long time on this show. Well done.

This episode, with all its grand moments, and the powerful ending certainly have us wanting more. This is what every great episode does. It impels us to want to see more with great anticipation; we want to see how this grand imaginary world in which we're indulging advances to the next chapter. This episode also gave us hope; it gave hope to every long-time fan of The Flash, hope that this show can once again rock. This episode certainly rocked.

My score: 9.3/10 Grade: A

Best episode of the show so far
gradd_pipas5 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had me yelling with amusement all along. All these scenes from s1 s2 s3 and even s4 were absolutely phenomenal.

The only thing that i disliked was the Cicada's plot armor during the battle. They managed to make the device work and depower cicada's dagger temporary but then when Cisco breaches it away, he chooses outer space instead of a dead earth where Cicada's powers would prolly be unable to call it back from. I really dont understand why they write a flawless episode and then do something that makes no sense what-so-ever and ruin a fight that would be the end of Cicada.

My honest opinion, this should have been the final episode of the season, where Barry risks it all by traveling back in different times to construct this device and ultimately defeating Cicada instead of this.

Redemption, finally - The best episode of Season 5
asb_deutsch6 December 2018
2018 hasn't been the best of years for the Flash. Viewership has declined and so did my ratings. 😅 What else can be better and bigger than this episode? Else wait for ElseWorlds but I still feel so overwhelmed that I viewed it twice as I have learnt new terms like hack-time! The Once and future Flash was also directed by Cavanagh. He is not only a wonderful actor but one of the best TV directors. If anybody deserves a seat in the director's seat, it's Tom Cavanagh for TV just like Nolan for movies. He finally removed the soap opera drama and fused the entities of previous seasons. The optimistic, pessimistic, and pensive tunes fall at the right places. I wish WB would hire him more often as he understands drama 10x better than other directors. Plus that twist turn at the end....wow!

Absolutely loved it but have so many questions, somebody help!
astrobot5 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So many questions about this episode.

1). Barry and Nora messed up the timeline so much (told Thawne that he wouldn't make it back home and got Zoom to be caught by the wraith) but the future/present didn't change at all? How so?

2). Is Nora faster than Barry and the time wraith?

3). Is the current Barry still slower than Zoom?

4). Why the heck did Zoom come back to Star Labs where he caught Barry and Nora?

5). Savitar and the then Barry literally jumped over the current Barry and Nora and still didn't bother to stop or think about who they are? Lol.

Or is it one of those episodes where you just enjoy without thinking too much.

But in the end, what a fantastic episode and it covers so much. I have a feeling that this season is going to get really heavy and could match or out do season 1.

One episode combined with the best that flash can offer.
patrickgamer69025 December 2018
A classic flash episode which has twists and turns every minute. Coupled up with great acting from Jessica P. Kennedy and Grant gustin and of course the great Tom Cavanaugh and good directing this episode is one of the best the Flash can offer. I bet any flash fan will enjoy every minute of it.

Please! If you were stopped watching after s4 please give this episode a chance. It won't dissapoint. 10/10

100th episode and one of the best
Holt3445 December 2018
Right the second Ralph put on Back in Time I knew I would enjoy this episode, time travel have always been my favorite power with The Flash and here we get a whole episode with that. I enjoyed all the events that they traveled to, Eobard Thawne was the most interesting and epic but everything about the episode was epic. It has to be one of the best The Flash episodes, everything was just perfect.

Tom Cavanagh third time directing an episode and also his best, showing off true talent. He's also one hell of a good actor, it's interesting to see him act with all the different characters. Jessica Parker Kennedy is also a great addition to the cast, she makes Nora interesting and has great chemistry with the others. I really like what they got in store for her, seems like a great story arc.

How to build things up nicely and fall flat
rsathyanitt5 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
For a good part of this episode, things were crazy (and I mean this in the best way). As you may have seen in the trailer for the episode, they go back in time and it's, at the very least, a nostalgia trip, and during parts of it, super exciting!

Just when you think things can't get better, they don't get better and they fall back to old ways - the usual let's catch the villain and let him run away for really no reason (except that it's not the 23rd episode of the season). Basically, everything that you liked about the episode and everything they do gets undone and the 100th episode turns out to be an anti climax, especially because how tame/bland the villain getaway was. Yet another instance of unfulfilled promises by the Flash writers.

Clips Shows at Their Finest
jaydenbandy006 February 2019
Honestly, I'm not a fan of clip shows and until the final moments of this episode, that is all Episode 100 of The Flash had to offer. Extremely disappointed by the lack of creativity that this episode had to offer. Cool premise, terrible execution.

Finally a Great 'The Flash' Episode!
EddyTheMartian0075 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
(Minor Spoilers): I'm not gonna lie, I haven't been liking this season. It's full of filler, it feels bland, and honestly it's been kind of boring for me. The main villain was interesting at first, but honestly he became very comic booky (not in a good way) last episode, and I felt like the actor couldn't carry the main villain role. However finally we've gotten a genuinely great, honestly amazing episode! This is definitely one of the best 'The Flash' episodes in a long time. I don't remember the last time I was so hyped about an episode, and so engaged.

The episode revolves around Nora and Barry having to go back in time, so they can find some specific items to essentially stop Cicada's Dagger, and... well win. My biggest issue with this episode would probably how quickly things are resolved. I'm pretty sure the time travel stuff only took up a little over half of the episode, with the other 15 minutes being the set up, and them using the device. That did make some of the time travel stuff a little underwhelming, but it was still really well done, and it had some genuinely exciting moments for me. We saw a ton of cameos, and it had some great moments with Nora and Barry. Barry show's that he has a much darker past than she believes. That was a very good scene between them. Also Props to Tom Cavanagh playing 3 or 4 characters this episode. There was also a really great moment with him. I did feel like there were a few things that were resolved too easily, and also there's a few things that seem like they would've affected the timeline. It was great to see all the villains again though, and different perspectives to some of the moments. The episode was very fast paced which made it really enjoyable. The final bit with Cicada was pretty good. It had a great twist at the end, which sets up a very exciting second half of the season. I just really enjoyed this episode and I think it's definitely one of the best episodes in a long time. It did have some issues, and I felt like some things were underwhelming, there's definitely some plot holes, but I'm just happy to be enjoying The Flash again. Hopefully the second half of the season improves, and this isn't just a fluke. (9/10)

Best Flash episode in years!
ngonzalez-699446 December 2018
Whenever Tom Cavanagh directs an episode, you know that it is gonna be great. The last two episodes he directed, 03x19 and 04x04, were some of the best episodes of their respective seasons. This episode proved that if anybody deserves a seat in the director's seat, it's Tom Cavanagh.

This episode brought back the old-school Flash feelings that I haven't felt since Season 3. And I'm not just saying that because they brought back the old villains. Seeing Barry and Nora working together gave me memories of Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin working on the show. No Iris, Ralph, or 4 copies of Wells. Just Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin. If they can bring back that dynamic, this could be the best season since Season 2.

AND THAT ENDING THO. I'm not gonna spoil it, but I don't think I've seen a better cliffhanger in years. Once again, the best episode of the Flash in a long time. If they can keep that Vibe (pun very much intended) for the rest of the season, this could be the best season of the Flash in a long time.

Time for a villain change
hawkins_saints_rock6 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
What an incredible episode! I always expected a high quality episode being the 100th of the series (quite an accomplishment by the way), but I never expected it to be this awesome!

In order to stop Cicada, Barry and Nora go back in time and have interactions with all the previous seasons. Savitar, Zoom, and of course, Thawne; the star of the episode.

The best parts of this episode were the interactions between Nora and Thawne, and these moments felt too big to just be a one off. In fact, we find out at the end that it seems like Nora has been working with Thawne somehow. So please, please, please Flash writers, make Thawne the main villain of this season. I have enjoyed Cicada, but there's no denying that this seems like the perfect time to reintroduce Tom Cavanagh's Eobard Thawne for his second stint as the main villain. I thoroughly believe that if they go down this route, the back half of this season will rival both season 1 and 2.

Oh and P.S - Tom Cavanagh is awesome. Sherloque, Harry, Thawne and Dr Harrison Wells portrayed to perfection all in the one episode. Amazing.

Just Amazing
Sam_Morningstar5 December 2018
'What's Past Is Prologue', The 100th Episode, is the best episode of this Season. There is a lot of references of the previous seasons and some new. Tom Cavanagh's Directing was amazing and on point as usual. We saw the return of a familiar face from Season 1. The emotions were also on point. But possibly the most shocking and best part is the ending which was amazingly executed and allows us to think and speculate about it.

A time traveling journey.
cruise0112 July 2019
The Flash 5.08 (3 out of 5 stars).

Barry and his team come up with a plan to stop Cicada. Which involves him and Nora travelling back in time to place some dark matter in an area were they can confront and stop Cicada in the present. They come across some past enemies and events which tests Barry and Nora.

Decent action, boring story, and the showdown with Cicada does have some surprises. The end does leave in a cliffhangar.

Reusing Old Footage
kap-crp24245 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
To fill out this episode's time slot, there are numerous minutes of film used in previous seasons. Been there, seen and done that already. Watching Nora and Flash in the speed tunnel, slowed down to see their hands pumping up and down as they're running, is hysterical. That "time wraith" is incredibly bad CGI and it's another "bad guy" rehash. Nora continues to be trouble, always opening her mouth when she needs to be muzzled. The only good part of this episode is the acting of Tom Cavanagh.

The Flash had a rough start this season but it might come back ever since this episode. This episode brought back the feeling of the old seasons of the Flash. It was great to see the villains from past seasons and the battle with Cicada is intense.

What an achievement to be in 100 episodes!
