Don't compare this show with the movie.
ferrybijl29 March 2019
I see a lot of reviews comparing this tv show with the movie. Just don't. This is a totally different thing to watch and it's very good.

The acting is perfect, the cinematography is also very well done and there is a lot a thrills going by in one way or the other.

And Esme Creed-Miles (Hanna)? Where did they find this actress. She is so good. I Knew Joel Kinnaman allready from Altered carbon. But Esme did it here. Mireille Enos as Marissa also did very very well.

I'm at epdisode 5 now and i wanted to wait with my review till the end but i couldt resist cause of all the negative reviews. Mostly after seeing the first episode only and comparing it with the movie. Just don't and watch it like somthing new.

Just watch and enjoy. I think this is Prime's best show till now.

Greetings from the Netherlands and excuse me for my English.

Season one was better
mcied-josh12 July 2020
Season one was great. I was hooked with every episode and the character development was great. Season 2 seems to be pretty bad. Its very redundant and decisions are made that frustrate you beyond belief. Shame cause this series was so good it's first season.

[7.5] Season 2_ Little Alias with teens
cjonesas13 August 2020
Though I hoped that this season would be better than the first, as per my review about 5 months ago, I was kinda let down.

  • The story is not better than season 1.
  • We've got sort of 5 episodes of fillers and 3 more serious and better ones.
  • We do not see Hanna more in action (aside the last 3 serious episodes). She should be more on the spotlight, with shininess and more crazy good performances. She is like a human "Bionic" girl with awesome abilities and amazing aiming. The producers & writers really need to understand that and give her increased brilliant spots to shine (martial arts and guns alike).
  • Sandy (Áine Rose Daly) was one of the highlight of the season. She's a talented and beautiful actress who has the potential to become a really bad yet powerful smart girl in the series.
  • Nothing of real interest for Marissa, aside adding mother-like behaviors to her collection in the show; Although, her personal style of handling guns are one of the best I saw in women and men alike.

Again, I ask the producers, to give to series aim & purpose and squeeze it into a powerful beam for it to really deliver and shine.

Less "useless" characters and more of Hanna in action.

Pretty Entertaining!
Supermanfan-139 December 2021
I thought Hanna was a show that's definitely worth watching, it's actually pretty good! From what I've read it seems that most of the low reviews are from people who are comparing it to the movie and don't like that it's a little bit different from it. Who cares? Just enjoy it for what it is and that's an entertaining tv show that's separate from the movie! Season 1 is the best of the seasons but they're all pretty good. It may start off a little slow for some but stick with it because it turns into an action packed thriller that will keep you entertained throughout the entire series!

22 hours of highest-tier action movie, straight
inc-133-7001314 January 2022
I started watching "Hanna" with heavy dose skepticism. Most of the Girl Power shows mean well, but totally butcher the realism and forget action to have a lot of soap opera. Or long music videos with tear-jerking. Boy how wrong I was. And how happy I am to be wrong.

"Hanna" is basically 22-hour Jason Bourne marathon, and the foot *never* leaves the gas pedal. The action is dark and brutal, explosive and imminent, and even with a petite teenager at main role, still somehow quite believable. The mysteries never linger for too long, the great moments don't get milked and dragged out, the soap opera is little and only there to build character. Even computers/using them looks more believable than a random show you could throw a laptop at. Closest movie equivalent in terms of atmosphere would be probably (highly underrated) "Mile 22", it has that same dark, suffocating terror of bullets vs. Human mortality, cynical professionalism and merciless collisions of interest.

Some episodes have easily body count in dozens and there basically isn't an episode without some of the best action you're otherwise used to only seeing in highest-budget movies. It's hard to believe you're watching a series. Otherwise very strong shows like "24" feel so tiny in the rear-view mirror that you're embarrassed how much you liked them before seeing "Hanna". It feels like totally new level.

This show somehow has it all, the tradecraft, the conspiracies, the fighting and the shooting, the capital hopping and psychological battles, the love and hate, all rationed out just right to never get dull. If anything, second season feels a tiny bit slower than rest, but your patience will be rewarded by truckloads.

And that is a wonderful, wonderful thing for anyone who likes espionage, high-octane chases and gunfights. Sure, there some plot holes, and some stupid decisions and nitpicks, the story drags a bit in second season and blasts too strongly in third, but 97% of "Hanna" is still absolutely excellent.

There's few quite negative reviews here, but I'd really want to ask those reviewers what are they even comparing this show against? Because I've scoured the genre far and wide and really can't see a good contender - I love techno-thrillers and I seriously couldn't name a show or not even many movies that did any of this any better.

And that's all even before we get to character performances, deliciously claustrophobic soundtrack or jaw-dropping visuals. And it doesn't even matter. I'm sure acting careers did born, new standards were set, and so forth. It's a bulletproof product. So...

Haven't seen it yet? Why are you still reading this review?

75% is made by Top notch filmmakers take a break and the other 25% B movie masters take over
KOOLAIDBRO15 July 2020
I'm still trying to figure it out what happened here and what I mean by the headline. I also think people saying the second season is action packed really threw me off. It's not. It's more of a thriller. I get they wanted to humanize some of the characters, but episodes 4-5 almost put me in a coma from boredom. The first 3 were intense and the final 3 were really good. There's a lot of mistakes made and lessons not learned by the characters and it was driving me crazy. You'll see. It felt like the budget was slashed or something also. Something just felt off. It was like there was a grade A filmmaking crew was shooting this and they would go on break and film school would take over for a few scenes here and there and suddenly everything is laughable or just really bad. Esme Creed-Miles is about the only constant that stays good even in these bad scenes. Like there's a shootout that's going really good with great effects and it was like they called timeout and finished the scene in a kitchen that looked like it was shot in one take on a smartphone, if you read this before watching the last episode pay attention to this scene. There's a extra baddie that catches on fire in the kitchen scene that is absolutely so bad it's hilarious. Even Enos and Mulroney are all over the place. It's weird. In the end I enjoyed it, but it's way overhyped and it's not action packed. So just know that going in. Even the IGN review said action packed. I'm really trying to tell you it's not action packed so you know this from the get. You'll enjoy it much more. I know I would have.

Good action thriller
loevw24 January 2021
I just finished watching season 2 and I really liked it! I won't compare it with the first season because it has been a while since I've watched it but I would say that it felt almost at the same level, although the story took a different direction. But hey, it's a new season! And I really hope that Amazon keeps it up with more and longer seasons. It's a fairly good mix of drama, action, thriller and many unexpected turns. I found myself really caring about what happens to some characters, seriously annoyed about the decisions of others and often on the edge of my seat, so to speak. Compared to so many average and boring shows available today, this is refreshingly entertaining. Esme Creed-Miles did an excellent job, as well as all the supporting artists.

Interesting interpretation then divergence from the movie. Good series.
TxMike4 February 2019
Update November 24, 2021: The third season became available today. At the end of season #2 Hanna, as Mia, at the swimming pool asks, "So, what now?" The first episode in season #3 doesn't specifically answer that but we are taken to a new class of teenage girls just finishing their training as assassins and given their assignments to different parts of the world. The show retains that sense of intrigue and "who can you trust" feeling. I look forward to watching all the episodes.

The 2011 movie "Hanna" is one of my favorites, but in reality a lot of story is compressed into its running time.

In season #1 Amazon Prime offered roughly 6 hours of story over 8 episodes. The first one, which I saw last night, is a fine start. The actress who plays Hanna is the daughter of Samantha Morton and she is fine in the role, but quite different from what Ronan brought to the role in the movie. As the series progressed I found myself liking the new Hanna character more and more. By the end of season #2 she owned the role.

The basic premise is the same but it is told somewhat differently. It is a bit darker and grittier and the scene where Hanna is discovered and captured is done quite differently from what is depicted in the movie. Neither good nor bad, just different. Also throughout they added enough "salty" language to get an "R" rating if this were a movie.

Now that I have watched the whole series I can say "pretty good effort." While all the story lines are consistent with the movie most are depicted quite differently, a lot more depth and extrapolation are added to the basic story lines and, most of it works quite well.

It is not useful to directly compare this Amzon series to the 2011 "Hanna" movie because they had different goals and they accomplished them differently. I say "kudos" to Amazon for bringing us this very interesting and entertaining series.

Season #1 ended close to where the movie ended so season #2 had to do an extrapolation of "what might have become of Hanna". It does a credible job of inventing something new. The experimental program to train young girls to become expert fighters has been restarted and Hanna becomes part of that, plus a handful of new and very interesting characters. This has become one of the better "invented for streaming" series. Hanna has the last line in season #2, at the swimming pool, "So, what now?"

Season 1 is the only season you should watch.
javierrobles-9906716 July 2020
Every episode in season 1 is like a mini movie, definitely must watch. Although the ending feels some what forced and not really justifiable; it's still a solid watch.

Season 2: 🤢 bruh, it's the classic let me tell the exact same story but in a worse way for the easy cash grab. I'm not even finished with the second season and the lapse of logic has been astounding. Character growth is dumb inconsistent. One episode she does things that she has no justification for knowing how to do, the next she's throwing a temper tantrum like if she was still that dumb little girls from episode 1. This isn't just her thought, almost all main characters go from overly cautious & or super competent to incredibly careless & or incompetent the next. What a sad waste of time and money.

What happened with Season 2?
jcparker-8631818 July 2020
I really enjoyed season 1 of this show. Good writing, lots of action, and good acting. I would rate S1 as a 9. I was *really* looking forward to season 2. Boy was I disappointed. It's as if they tossed out all the writers from S1 and brought in writers from the CW. They turned the show into a teenage girl's clique drama. Until the last 2 episodes of S2 they completely neutered Hanna's bad-assory and made it a show about a bunch of teenage girls living in a dorm together. Bleh.

Hannah brilliance is not only about well executed action scenes and beautiful location but also captivating story...
karmazyn9 May 2019
Hannah season 1 was captivating. I loved everything about this TV show. It was shot well, the scenery and locations were amazing. Finally something different than USA. Europe is also beautiful and worth exploring.

The screen filter was not the typical one you see for European locations by American film/TV makers. Unlike other productions shot with this grainy, darker filter, making you thing that streets of Europe are polluted, dirty , always dark locations - here everything has natural feel to it. Forests, cities are full of charm which is even more striking during spectacular action sequences.

The story will take you all over Europe. You will be following steps of Hannah, a fugitive teenager chased by CIA. All the dark secrets are waiting for you to explore them. Awesome. All of the actors did a really good job. Joel Kinneman and Mirelle Enos playing Marrisa Wiegler are spectacular.

There are no good/evil characters here which I really like about the show. Hannah did a great job too. She behaved exactly like a person would in her situation. Music was stellar. I think that amazon has a winner here. Marissa Wiegler smile again for me with your super fake and deadly semi corporate smile. Yes !

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert - Oh no they've been caught AGAIN...

I mean this highly guarded establishment with the armed guards and the cameras everywhere makes it impossible for the other 'inmates' to escape BUT Hanna has managed twice nearly and has only failed because the SAME person keeps betraying her. Ow the ovens hot, ow the ovens hot, ow the ovens hot...

It is getting a little tedious BUT I will stick with it as I loved the first one and the concept - BUT if she nearly escapes once more then I am putting my feet in someones in tray.

"I put babies in the furnace"
AfricanBro30 January 2022
I just binge watched season 3 and I don't know if it's because I watched 1 and 2 a long time ago but I think this could be the best season yet, although I still hold s1 really close to my heart. Such a great series especially if you like action and it has a compelling story to add onto that as well which keeps you engaged throughout in between fights. I hold s1 at heart because that's when we first feel the chemistry Hanna and her father had, s2 brings girl 249 into the picture, it wasn't bad though not as good as the fist season but in s3 everything seems more mature and it's just as thrilling as s1, brought back that edge of the seat feeling while maintaining a more complex plotline; you could sense the tension and urgency in each episode without overdramatizing it. And at 6-8 episodes a season it's incredibly binge worthy.

Best Binge-Worthy Show on Prime!!
PossibleOptimism20 June 2022
From the forests of Europe to the starkness of modern cityscape, Hanna draws us in with a mysterious understanding in her piercing eyes.

The mildly slow burn beginning of season 1 leads way to fast action throughout the second. The final season wraps up with a fantastic blend of the two as our characters complete their journey back. Betrayal, justice, and love all line up at just the right time for an emotional ending. This has been one of the best offerings Prime video has ever delivered.

And for me so far, the best show of the year...

Good first outing
rickyalf8 February 2019
I had seen the previous movie and thought it was very good. I like this episode and did not find any of the problems others complained about noise or brightness/darkness. I think people should give it a try and not compare one episode to a movie as I am sure being a series it can expand on certain aspects that a movie does not have time for and also does not need to rush. For me i enjoyed it and am looking forward to more episodes plus I have seen the main stars in other things and feel there is much more to come.

Outstanding!
flexi_brain17 May 2022
When I read other reviews, I was quite confused and am glad I went with my gut. This is an amazing story. The way Hanna matures over time and the way everything unfolds is mind boggling. The storyline is not at all out of direction and is quite gripping. In love with Hanna. One of those shows which I can watch again.

Good start before....
searchanddestroy-113 July 2020
This series proposes a good, if not amazing first season before everything falls apart in the second. This is though genuinely not a bad series but too much teen girls audiences oriented for my taste. And I am not a teenage girl. And action sequences are not believable at all, but I admit that belongs to the DNA of the show, even the movie, which I saw nine years ago. And the forever smiling CIA operative woman, even when she threatens someone, disturbs me, annoys my nerves.

Everything you want a thriller series to be.
rchalloner12 January 2022
Hanna is one of the best thriller series I have seen. Engrossing, intelligent, exciting and with great performances, especially from Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles. It's incredible to think that Esme Creed-Miles was just 17 when the series began. She brings such maturity, subtlety and intelligence to the role of Hanna/Mia, as well as an otherworldly aspect to the character. All of this makes her so believable as a young girl, brought up in a forest, naive and emotionally undeveloped, who only knows how to fight and does so with courage and determination. Creed-Miles makes Hanna's a moving and exciting journey, a real testimony to her acting ability - but then Samantha Morton, another great actress, is her mother. It must be in the genes.

A Clever Concept Executed Reasonably Well
iquine8 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
(Flash Review)

A girl is raised in the forest and trained as a soldier by her father to be able to protect herself in case the CIA locates and comes searching for her and her father. At the age of 16 or so, and never having seen another living human, the two are flushed out and into society and the city by the CIA. This girl adjusts really well and occasionally 'unbelievably' quickly to modern society as well as teenage girl life issues. Often, I don't think Hanna would have knowledge of something that she is shown to have and isn't amazed or perplexed enough by a world she has never known. With the goal of character development, there are more than a necessary amount of adolescent 'teen' scenes that tend to drag too long way after the point has been made. These are interspersed with some quality cat and mouse CIA chase scenes, which is the core to the series. Most of the scenes are really good yet a few scenes I exclaimed "really?!"; usually from lazy writing. Overall, this is a semi-unique take on spy and cop action TV shows.

Hanna captures your heart entirely
richiehodev16 April 2022
Season 1: 9/10 Season 2: 7/10 Season 3: 8/10

There are 3 prevailing themes for each season of Hanna: Season 1 is childhood, Season 2 is adolescence, and Season 3 maturation.

Through Hanna's own upbringing and development in the 3 season arc, we get an excellent look into how our personalities and perceptions are can be molded and changed over time whether it be through nature or nurture. Season 1 captures your heart because of Hanna's innocence, as she clumsily tries to navigate through the outside world after spending all of her younger years with only her father in a secluded forest. Our hearts break for her as she comes to grip with her own past and her father's true identity. Then in Season 2, without her father, we start to see Hanna learning to let go of her own upbringing and allowing herself to indulge in own curiosities. She learns to make decisions for herself and starts to develop her own sense of morality. Finally in Season 3, Hanna is truly grown up, and now accepts her own past and is resolved to sacrificing herself to make a positive change for the future.

The primary casting of Esmee Creed-Miles as Hanna, Mireille Enos as Marissa Weigler, and Joel Kinnaman as Erik Holder can do no wrong and undoubtedly elevates this adaptation of Hanna. Esmee effortlessly captures the childlike innocence of Hanna, and Mireille and Joel's chemistry is palpable on screen (this is even more so apparent if you have already seen them for 3 seasons on The Killing). These three demands your attention every time that they are on screen, because they so expertly personifies their character's struggles, and as viewers, you instinctively root for them as their characters evolve throughout the series.

Anyone who compares this TV adaptation to the movie should be reminded that the premise for both were written by the same David Farr. This TV series was intended to be a re-imagining of the movie, as Farr wanted to fill in the gaps that were left in the movie. From the picturesque European landscapes and architecture captured through the flawless cinematography, to the timely and effective soundtrack, this series engulfs you in the the Hanna universe, with its compelling storytelling based on the shadowy Utrax organization and its covert operations.

At the core of it is still the human element that is always on display even through blazing gunfights and breathless pursuits through a forest. Characters act and speak with urgency and a purpose, and they are intent on fulfilling their personal mission. Most memorable with always be the parental bond between Erik and Hanna, and then subsequently between Marissa and Hanna: it captures your heart entirely because you are reminded of your own upbringing. Very rarely can on-screen characters leave an imprint on you after the screen has faded out, but after 22 episodes, it is bittersweet to finally say goodbye to the Hanna universe.

A Fantastic Show that Slowly Slides Downhill
zgedarkknight27 December 2021
Hanna is a fantastic adaptation of the 2011 film of the same name. Season one is fantastic and really brought to life by Esme Creed-Miles and Joel Kinnaman. I 100% recommend you watch this show for the 1st season alone. However, the show starts to slide after the 1st season. Season 2 is still very good and worth watching but didn't blow me away. Season 3 is lackluster and I was was extremely disappointed with the writing. Creed-Miles does an excellent job of embodying Hanna and carrying the show but the writing of season 3 was so appallingly bad and often tried to shift the storyline outside of Hanna.

I absolutely recommend that you give this show a chance for the first season alone and if I had to give ratings to the seasons they would be: Season 1: 9 Season 2: 7 Season 3: 5.

And yes its literally that bad, its not a thriller its not a drama its a show who budget they clearly cut for the second season... its just a show about teen love in the 2nd season the action is minimal and the story line is painfully slow and disconnected
