Review of Hanna

Hanna (2019–2021)
10/10
22 hours of highest-tier action movie, straight
14 January 2022
I started watching "Hanna" with heavy dose skepticism. Most of the Girl Power shows mean well, but totally butcher the realism and forget action to have a lot of soap opera. Or long music videos with tear-jerking. Boy how wrong I was. And how happy I am to be wrong.

"Hanna" is basically 22-hour Jason Bourne marathon, and the foot *never* leaves the gas pedal. The action is dark and brutal, explosive and imminent, and even with a petite teenager at main role, still somehow quite believable. The mysteries never linger for too long, the great moments don't get milked and dragged out, the soap opera is little and only there to build character. Even computers/using them looks more believable than a random show you could throw a laptop at. Closest movie equivalent in terms of atmosphere would be probably (highly underrated) "Mile 22", it has that same dark, suffocating terror of bullets vs. Human mortality, cynical professionalism and merciless collisions of interest.

Some episodes have easily body count in dozens and there basically isn't an episode without some of the best action you're otherwise used to only seeing in highest-budget movies. It's hard to believe you're watching a series. Otherwise very strong shows like "24" feel so tiny in the rear-view mirror that you're embarrassed how much you liked them before seeing "Hanna". It feels like totally new level.

This show somehow has it all, the tradecraft, the conspiracies, the fighting and the shooting, the capital hopping and psychological battles, the love and hate, all rationed out just right to never get dull. If anything, second season feels a tiny bit slower than rest, but your patience will be rewarded by truckloads.

And that is a wonderful, wonderful thing for anyone who likes espionage, high-octane chases and gunfights. Sure, there some plot holes, and some stupid decisions and nitpicks, the story drags a bit in second season and blasts too strongly in third, but 97% of "Hanna" is still absolutely excellent.

There's few quite negative reviews here, but I'd really want to ask those reviewers what are they even comparing this show against? Because I've scoured the genre far and wide and really can't see a good contender - I love techno-thrillers and I seriously couldn't name a show or not even many movies that did any of this any better.

And that's all even before we get to character performances, deliciously claustrophobic soundtrack or jaw-dropping visuals. And it doesn't even matter. I'm sure acting careers did born, new standards were set, and so forth. It's a bulletproof product. So...
