The Flash - S04E13 True Colors
j_forbesy7 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode of The Flash, we got a prison break, a new set of abilities and what appears to be a major victory for Team Flash. Considering the break this show is about to undergo, this episode did what it needed to by tying up a few plot lines so that when we return, we can start a new chapter in this season.

Firstly I want to start with everything involving Barry. I really enjoyed his prison break scenes because it really displayed not only his leadership skills but also his science skills. Barry's science skills often get put in the back seat because of having the likes of Cisco, Harry and Caitlin, so it was great that the show used this opportunity to show what Barry can do if he was left to his own knowledge. I'll touch on this a bit more later but I liked how Barry was consistent in his stance of finding a legal way out of prison. I like this because it made the writers come up with a creative way to remove him rather than just having him faze out every time the Flash was needed.

Which brings me to Ralph's newly discovered abilities. When it first happened I though that it could be a really strange thing to introduce into the show, however the way that they explained it and utilised it made me feel like it has a place in this show. As we saw, they used it to free Barry and I thought that was great. The reason I think this is great is that this release could go one of two ways. Either Team Flash, or more specifically Ralph, outsmarted DeVoe and used his abilities that were give to him by DeVoe to free Barry, or DeVoe predicted that this was happen and that is why Ralph was needed in his master plan. No mater which was it goes, I think it is a positive move for the show. Adding on to that, I am interested to see if there is more DeVoe has planned for Ralph. They are setting up that there is however if it turns out DeVoe planned the releasing of Barry, then Ralph may have already served his purpose.

To focus a bit on DeVoe and Marlize, I think we have started to see a way for Team Flash to overcoming DeVoe. I always had the feeling that Marlize would not remain loyal to DeVoe and after this episode, I think that is stronger then ever. It has been interesting to see how much she has evolved in the last few weeks. Only a month ago she was telling Iris that she would do anything for her husband. Now she is doubting if her loyalty has been mislead and that if they are still accomplishing everything they planned to do.

Overall, this was a great episode of The Flash. This was an episode that we will look back at later in the season and see that this is a turning point in the season. Cracks are starting to show in DeVoe however with the way this season has gone, I would be surprised if DeVoe predicted everything.

Breakout episode

Warning: Spoilers
Felt this was a good episode. Prison breakouts are always fun and it was interesting to see Flash have to work with old enemies. Liked his helping Hazard do the right thing and what happened to her was touchingly tragic. It was also interesting to see Killer Frost give a pep talk.

On the downside, Amunet is way to campy to be taken seriously as a powerful player and Barry's acquittal was as forced and flimsy as his trial.

Suicide Squad 2.0

Warning: Spoilers
Barry Allen prison break! A team of meta's breaking out against corruption, sounds familiar. Barry Allen's own version of the Suicide Squad, Kilgore, Dwarf Star, Hazard, Black Bison and Flash. Although I don't see why they have to die. All of them were choosing to be reformed. They should all have survived and formed their own Suicide Squad so that they could make up for their crimes. Working with CCPD. Even appearing in one off episodes every season or so would be a treat.

Warning: Spoilers
1) When the "metas" escape into the prison yard, the warden shoots an ankle "controlling" device on the Flash, but does not do so with the other dangerous "metas". Instead, he speaks to them about how they are being tricked by the Flash to get them to turn on each other. And stupidly, this actually works. They fight amongst each other instead of trying to escape. 2) The warden says "If you are thirsty for vengeance, you might want to start with the Flash". Immediately after this, and BEFORE he tells them Barry Allen is the Flash, they all look at Barry as if they already know he is the Flash, (when they have not been told this yet), instead of looking at the warden and saying something nothing like "Sure, we would be happy to take out the Flash, where is he?"

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: True Colors

Warning: Spoilers
Barry assists the bus meta's in a failed jailbreak to prevent from being sold on the black market. Human trafficking...nice!👌 I really like this episode, it's my favorite episode of Barry in prison. It's hard to explain why I love it, but the return of The Thinker was executed flawlessly! The last 10 minutes where they all straight up DIE is very intense and one of the best moments in the season lol. Amunet Black is in it but only for a few minutes, so she can't ruin it. This episode's biggest strength is being the string that holds the season together. It brings together all the "filler" episodes and makes them feel impactful. I applaud this episode for that! True Colors is intense and unexpected and all around awesome!

8/10-Great!👍👍

Jailbreak

Warning: Spoilers
This is definitely one of the better episodes of "The Flash" this year, as it has been a little mixed since it returned from its mid-season break. I love that this episode continues from where the last episode ended and that we get to see Cecille actually use her powers to help the group. When the scene came where she uses her powers to read Wolfe's mind, I became very excited and said to myself that I would have definitely done the same. I also loved to see how Dibny is finally getting to know the full extend of his powers and that he was able to transform into a different being this episode. The fact that this episode went into developing some of the characters that have had rather weak storylines this season is a good thing, as it makes some of those characters a little easier to care about. There are still some weaknesses to these characters, but I like the progression.

Another big thing in this episode is that we see Clifford DeVoe and his wife have some bumps in their relationship. I think this is appropriate because there is so much to get used to for his wife, and it does give a different side than what we have seen before, where they have simply been each others love interests. I gives some development to them. However, I do think it's worrying that we haven't gotten any further clues as to what "the Enlightenment" is. I don't want this show to hide that reveal until the final episode as they did last year. Hopefully, we get some clarity soon.

I actually loved a whole bunch of the performances this week. I especially think that Richard Brooks got some better material in this episode, and didn't only have to play the angry prison warden. He had some fun and great moments which he desperately needed after last week's appearance. I also think that Grant Gustin had some nice moments in this episode, especially during his conversations with Becky Sharpe, who actually also had a redemption this week from her horrible last appearance.

That said, I am still not impressed by a lot of the villains. A lot of the inmate metas were as cringeworthy as they were during their last appearance, and I don't know what Katee Sackhoff is doing. She is a brilliant actress and has shown that several times before, but this performance is just too over-the-top and I can't get into it.

The fact that DeVoe decided to transfer his consciousness into Sharpe actually made a lot of sense to me. She is definitely the one with the strongest abilities and I think that he adapts to the powers of the host better than he would another body. It also gave some great tension in the final scene between DeVoe and his wife, because this is an entirely new side that she hasn't seen before, and that makes her feel weird. It was a clever decision that I thought worked out, and I commend the writers for going that particular way, instead of doing something that I thought they would do.

Last, I want to mention the Dibny storyline. I didn't find that storyline as effective as the writers might have wanted me to. I simply thought it was a little too late for that, because he has had similar arcs throughout this season already, that made some of his decisions in this episode a bit out-of-character. I hope they find some new ways for this character in the remaining episodes.

Shape Shifter

You know how excited I was when Neil Sandilands name appeared in the opening credits of tonight's episode? It's hard to believe I'm saying that after how mediocre I felt his introduction was in the first few episodes as The Thinker, but I was really hoping that there would be some sort of huge reveal where he had been Clifford DeVoe all along instead of the average Kendrick Sampson performance. However, even after immediately seeing him stroll into the courtroom at the end, I knew it was short lived. And pretty much everything in this episode felt very convenient and contrived anyway.

First, we had Cecile last week possessing the ability to all of a sudden read minds and thoughts. This week we got the convenience of Ralph figuring out how to shapeshift into other people's bodies and use their voices? Doesn't this just seem too convenient? And even after the fake DeVoe comes into the courtroom, how does the judge not think about looking into the grave that DeVoe's body is buried in? Giving Barry his temporary freedom already? It felt like the writers wanted to do the Barry in prison arc without knowing the ultimate resolution. That's not to mention the whole Amunet side to all of this. Yikes.

As I said before, I love Katee Sackhoff as a person and an actor. I've been a fan for years, but her performance as Amunet has got to stop. It's the most ridiculously tone def and over-the-top performance in the Arrowverse in quite some time, and it's only getting worse. The writers are not helping her out in this regard.

On the good side of things, Hazard had a surprisingly effective arc as it's clear to me she's not the villain that The Thinker desired her to be but rather a person caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. That was good, but that was just about it this week.

True Colors = old gum

Warning: Spoilers
Watched this live and it was meh. Even the couple things I liked felt like afterthought crumbs. Barry using his brains just reminds me how much I despise Iris' and the team's purpose now. KF's pep talk was fun. That was about it. Leader Iris still just giving orders, expecting the team to deliver without her actually leading them. Cecile's and Ralph's new powers are just to move the plot along, aka writers pulling poop out of their behinds. Ralph better be slated for Legends given the amount of screen time he has, otherwise, he's reaching his expiration date, and I like him. The resolution to the imprisoned metas, Warden Wolfe, freeing Barry, and Devoe's repetitive next step were all perfunctorily dealt with, almost as if the writers couldn't bother to write anymore, which makes me wonder why I bothered to watch.

The blocking for the show has been very interesting for awhile but never more so than now with Barry out of the picture. The 1st Star Labs scene in this ep sums up everything wrong with the show: the Wests and Cecile at the main console with Iris in the main chair while Cisco and Caitlin are by a smaller console on the other side in the corner. The delineation is clearly marked, with only Ralph in the middle connecting the two, and this is reflected in the rest of the ep. This is fricking Star Labs, not Joe's house. Yet, that's what this season has been. It does confirm that even if Wally were to take over as Flash, it'd still be The Iris.

Overall, True Colors' flailing and wailing over Amunet's plan were merely to hide the fact the ep just recycled old plot lines, twists and developments. The result is a stale, bland nothing burger. Score: 5

It could've been better

Warning: Spoilers
When I saw the promo for this episode I was excited because I thought we were going to finally see a fight between Flash and Amunet. We didn't get to see that fight, but that's not what I'm complaining about in this review.

My biggest concern is the more drama between Marlize and Clifford DeVoe. Marlize as we know is still adjusting to her husband's new body and of course she has doubts. But I didn't expect the Thinker to switch bodies again! This might've been a way to add a Girl + Girl relationship, but it seems very forced and not real at all. On the plus side Katee Stackoff, I think her name is, is still awesome as Amunet, and Neil Sandilands returns briefly. So I'm unsure if I will continue to appreciate this season, or keep watching. Because it's starting to be more Doctor Who than The Flash we knew in Season 1.
