One of my favorites
lynne-835417 February 2020
Love their motivation to make their town nicer, and their interaction. Seem like a very sweet couple!

Seems they really care about their clients doing things like putting in a single sink to keep costs down for a single homeowner in a small house, using butcher block counters instead of granite/quartz once in a while (assuming that's less expensive because he's a woodworker & does some amazing work!).

Having said that, when they have the budget they also do nice work with higher end materials. Like any of these shows, I can see some issues like a loose stair tread (and I know that not every room gets done due to time/budget issues) but honestly I'd be happy to have them remodel my place if I wanted someone to do that for me.

Bottom line, uplifting show with some interesting befores and/or afters

Real people

I enjoy watching Home Town because they renovate homes for real people. The average person (me) can't afford an expensive renovation. I appreciate watching something I could actually afford to do.

These two are so sweet...

I discovered this show while self isolating and it cheered me up. They are so nice to each other and it seems genuine. I really do not understand the negative reviews. If you don't like their taste don't watch. Taste in decor is very personal. We can't love everything but you have to love their enthusiasm. Its a feel good show.

Adorable couple, quality work
kellibruce17 May 2020
I have seen a few reviews on here that said negative things about this show or about the hosts and I want to address a few that are not based on opinion, because that varies by person and isn't something you can disprove or prove. One person claimed that the show never has people of color, but I personally have seen many African American couples, mixed couples, Hispanic, single moms, bachelors as well as gay and lesbian clients. So claiming that they are in the 'all white' part of Mississippi is disingenuous and trying to create a problem that doesn't exist just so you have something to complain about. And throwing the race card at a couple who seems to be beyond accepting of others is just a trashy move. Another person commented that the design is not up to the same standards as Joanna Gaines. I'm curious when Joanna was on the show. If she was a part of the show I guess I missed it. But if she wasn't on the show I guess her design ideas don't have anything to do with this show and if you prefer her designs you should be watching her show. The same person complained that Erin doesn't even dress herself well so that might be why she doesn't decorate the homes as well as Joanna Gaines does. I have watched both shows and it is apparent to me that Joanna dresses nicely because she has absolutely nothing to do with the construction or demolition of the homes. Erin, on the other hand, is there working side by side with her husband and their crew demoing the homes as well as occasionally helping out with some of the construction too. So, why on earth would she want to dress up in matching clothes while she's in a construction setting? That was almost the most ridiculous complaint I read about the show, but then I saw another review that said Ben always puts his arms around Erin and it's gross because his armpits are sweaty. Seriously. That was the cause for a person to give the show one star? They obviously live in a very sterile environment where no one sweats or has any other normal bodily functions. Must be nice. Or weird. So, now that I have complained about a few of the complainers here I will give my review of Home Town. Ben and Erin are cute together, you can see how much they love each other. You can also see how much they love their community. The way they refurbish their clients homes keeping the architectural integrity of the home while making them more modern where they need to be is amazing! But also, the way they find ways to personalize each home to the owner is one of the kindest things they do! Ben is a very talented woodworker and Erin does a wonderful job of making the houses into a home for their clients. I am glad to see that the vast majority of the people who have reviewed this show agree with me about the important things; the overall quality of the show, the enjoyment in seeing Ben and Erin host the show and the value they bring to the properties they rehab!

Realistic home renovation
annieroob7 May 2019
Sitting here watching another show of this type, I realise Ben and Erin have much nicer clients than the other show. They come in on or under budget each time. I do wonder how the buyers afford the rooms that are not renovated, however. I love the recycling element of the show.

The Napier's are adorable. They make small town Mississippi seem charming.i didn't know they existed until Fixer Upper went off. I'm happy I found them. It's now my favorite HGTV show.

Represents real people!
DrCharlesMontague28 July 2020
This show is such a welcome breath of fresh, real air on HGTV. So many of the other shows are full of flashy plastic people who represent the worst forms of greed, but this show is wonderful because they deal with people who have realistic and relatable budgets and the hosts are respectful of their clients' wishes and budgets.

I really appreciate the creative ways they SAVE money on this show instead of creatively spending MORE like what is done on other HGTV shows.

Nice show
burse-9972221 July 2020
I enjoy the show, The downed-to-earth and personal interactions actions are genuine to Laurel MS. Laurel is a small town where everyone knows everyone. No one is in a hurry. 😊 The majority of the US has never heard of Laurel MS. The show has brought positive attention/spin to Laurel.

My only suggestion Is to modify the show - Laurel is 61/62% + African American and 35/36% Caucasian. Yet, lThe show series reflect 95% Caucasian home purchases and renovations. Every now and again you may see black person as a worker (S4, Episode 6 has a black worker with a speaking part👏🏼). This show does not reflect the demographics.

Before you ask, I am at HGTV fan And I watch every show. And, I know the town.

Friendly Cast and Creative
shoreguy-0231215 April 2024
Ben and Erin are so cute together and good banter. It's a great show like the renovations comes out nice and Ben making new furniture out of old wood I like that part. I do feel Erin dresses too frumpy like Laura Ingall from little house on the prairie. To much talking at times I get it it's a show, I like to see months later after the new owners all moved in. The town seems to be really friendly as well I did look up houses and did see mansions and homes 1 million plus love to see make overs over 500k. Do they stay in Laurel only be cool to see them take it on the road to a new state, if I owned a house I hire them why not.

Time to shut down
balldave21 December 2023
Been watching since day one and actually going through the series in order again but starting to wonder why. What was annoying initially still lingers. Reading other reviews I agree on the following-

> Ben Napier's mauling his wife in every interview. That Southern 'this is my woman' macho stance is sickening.

> Erin's cheesy, watercolour renderings of the homes is absurd. My 7 year old granddaughter does better at her age. And stop having people flop over these paintings..so phony.

> painting over top surfaces not scraped or properly prepared.

> Ben's high school woodworkings. It's gotten better but making a buffet with old window frames with paint still on in places ?

> Erin's horrible use of an old suitcase for a medicine cabinet..people are paying big dollars here !

> Have Erin stop begging for compliments! "Do you like it ?" Over and over.

> Ben's over reaction over already scripted comments and events. The audience is not stupid!

...end of part 1.

Like Comfort Food for the Soul!
Doris-corea259 February 2020
I just love this show! They are a warm and loving couple creating comfortable homes for their home town. Ben creates so much from sources some people wouldn't think to use. And in my estimation his creations look great! Erin puts her heart and soul into creating a comfy home you can see yourself living in. In response to one persons rating about not seeing any people of color on the show, right this moment I'm watching S1E8 and the clients are people of color. This is my go to comfy show to watch anytime it's on HGTV!

My favourite.

Ben and Erin are sweet. I love their design and how they recycle and give new use to the things found at the houses. They respect the building and it's history. I would love for them to redo my house, except that I live in Argentina.

What about the bedrooms?
lpadilla-9384424 April 2020
I love this show. What I like is that the Napier's live in this town and they take pride in it. I get a kick out of it when Ben brings his two buddies along on a project and that Ben builds something in his wood shop for the homes. It's also cool that they do houses for people of all income levels. I mean, they do a project for $75,000.

The only issue I have is that the producers don't show the rooms that they weren't able to renovate for either time or money. If that's the case, just tell us. "We weren't able to finish the upstairs bedrooms because it wasn't in the budget." Or "Due to time constraints, we couldn't show the upstairs renovation." etc. Don't just pretend that the rooms aren't there. It's kind of insulting.

Great Style
Lostsocalgal11 December 2019
I adore this wonderful show, I truly do. I would love to have Erin help me style my next home. HOWEVER why the heck do the Buyers not have a physical inspection before purchasing? Seriously, bats, plumbing not to code, structural issues........ Who in their right mind would advise a Buyer to go through with a purchase of a HOME without a physical inspection? The largest purchase of their lifetime!! It would be EXTREMELY beneficial for Buyers watching who are considering purchasing a home to know that this is a VALUABLE AND NECESSARY step in purchasing their future home. This inspection could/will save a Buyer sometimes tens of thousands of dollars!! And headaches AND Buyers REMORSE.

These two put the "home" in home renovation! So far nothing feels staged or fake, and we enjoy every minute that these two lovebirds allow us into their lives.

Authentic, adorable couple renovate homes for real people
debrakay-051736 June 2022
I discovered this show about a year ago and have fallen in love with Laurel, Mississippi. To the people complaining that they don't see people of color; you obviously haven't watched many episodes. They've actually changed my narrow minded views about small southern towns. Ben and Erin are a sweet, loving, authentic and talented couple. They respect their client's budget and don't exceed it. (Yes, most of us have a budget) They respect the history and architectural integrity of every house they renovate and I love that Ben always builds a special piece (or two) in his workshop. Erin is an artist and I adore the creative ideas she comes up with. I love that they actually get their hands dirty and they dress appropriately for people renovating a house. It goes without saying that you don't wear your party clothes and heels to renovate a house. The only reason I gave a 9 and not a 10 is you don't see every room renovated and I would assume that they don't leave them untouched. At least I would hope not.
