This episode will give me nightmares tonight
yejusbilas-4133720 May 2019
This show keeps exceeding expectations. More characters get involved with the story, and we get more insights into the Upside Down and how it and its monstrous inhabitants are connected to the characters in the real world, especially Will. Meanwhile, Nancy and Jonathan have more 'close' moments, and Destin finds an unlikely ally to deal with his Demogorgon pet. Oh, and there are a few jumpscares but they're well-timed.

One of the Best Episodes
claudio_carvalho6 January 2018
Hopper is trapped in the tunnels and can not find anyway out since the hole he made has been covered by wines. Meanwhile Jonathan and Nancy seek out Murray´s home to disclose the truth about Barb using also the tape recorder. Lucas tells to Max what happened to Will when he vanished, but she does not believe in his words. Bob comes to Joyce´s home and notes that Will´s drawings are indeed a map of Hawkins and they find Hopper´s whereabouts. Dustin traps Dart that has grown up in the basement and Steve helps him. Terry tries to communicate with El. Joyce and Bob rescue Bob and scientists from the Hawkins Laboratory help them to leave the tunnels.

"Chapter Five: Dig Dug" is one of the best episodes of "Stranger Things".The story is well written and has many unforgettable moments. Will is totally connected to the shadow monster, sharing feelings with the Upside Down world. Bob is becoming an important character in the story and Dr. Sam Owes does not seem to be a bad guy. My vote is nine.

Big revelations
TheDonaldofDoom11 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was somewhat uneven. Hopper walking right into a trap is kind of dumb, I mean didn't he think "Perhaps I should get backup before exploring these weird alien tunnels?" Inevitably, he's caught in the vines/tentacles, and that sets up the main plot of the episode in a way that feels contrived. Although it put Bob to some use, it could have also done without the extended map reading to find where Hopper's being held. Wasn't very interesting to watch.

However, other parts of this episode were amazing, particularly Eleven's scene. Watching her finally meet her mother was heartbreaking and the flashback scene, where Eleven is torn away from her, it's made up that it was stillborn and her mother is literally turned into a vegetable, was hard to watch.

Nancy and Jonathan's scenes were less interesting as they go on a long-winded trip to connect the dots without really discovering anything much. Although it is amusing to see them confused about their feelings towards each other. The final moment of the episode was some intense stuff, though. Although the story leading up to it wasn't special, the fact that when the vines are hurt so is Will will lead to a horrifying dilemma, and seeing him writhe on the ground screaming is disturbing. It also reveals that the vines and the being inside Will are the same thing.

A good episode with a great ending.

An Electric Episode
Hitchcoc31 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I know I'm not supposed to rain on someone else's parade, but why are two people posting exactly the same review for every episode? I thought this was suspense and excitement at its best. We have Hopper going where no one should go. We have Nancy and Jonathan in league with that conspiracy theory guy, trying to figure out how to break the "crazy" story of their friend's death, so they will be believed and not dismissed out of hand. Will is possessed by this monster and his mother and Bob are trying to figure out what to do about his visions. Then we are brought into Eleven's world as she seeks out her mother, who, she finds out, gave birth to her and then received shock therapy. She is seemingly mindless and yet in her subconscious she continues to live. And again it is that lab and their doings. We are always kept in the dark about the lab except that one of their primary focuses is to keep some sort of creature at bay. Also, Dustin has to think fast and get Dart out of the house. The thing has eaten his cat and has a voracious appetite going forward. It's Halloween night here and this is a great way to begin the evening.

Dark troubles
TheLittleSongbird19 October 2021
Netflix has really varied with its shows, but 'Stranger Things' to me is one of its hits. In their prime, it, 'The Crown' and 'House of Cards' (despite its terrible final season) were absolutely brilliant. Season 1 is excellent and Season 2, while a slow starter (unlike its first season) and with one of the show's worst episodes in it, was very nearly as great on the whole and did quickly build momentum. Season 3 on the whole felt like a different show.

One of the best episodes of Season 2 is "Chapter Five: Dig Dug", which is also one of my favourite 'Stranger Things' episodes. Like its excellent previous episode it builds upon what was introduced earlier in the season and upon what we know already about the mystery (while not going round in circles), and further builds upon the events of that episode. As well as progressing the story and characters (especially Eleven). All without setting too many things up or taking too long to do so and it certainly didn't feel like filler.

Its numerous great things are very similar to the previous two episodes and the show even in general, except "Chapter Five: Dig Dug" is even better. As it's tighter in pace, with nothing slowing things down, there are less cliches and everything here feels necessary. A brilliant episode all round and what 'Stranger Things' is all about.

"Chapter Five: Dig Dug's" visuals are of outstanding quality. Very stylish and atmospheric, with some truly beautiful images that one can't believe such high quality comes from a Netflix show. Not to mention the highly impressive special effects that put a good deal of big budget films in recent years to shame. The music has a wonderful 80s nostalgic vibe while also being quite haunting, enhancing the atmosphere beautifully. Of the uniformly strong acting, the beyond her years work of Millie Bobby Brown is particularly note-worthy and absolutely loved Eleven's character development, which was investable and illuminating.

Writing has lost none of its brains and heart, while there is an ominous creepiness there is some genuinely funny and gentle humour, an affectionate nostalgia and poignancy without any cheese or melodrama. The story is darkly suspenseful with plenty going on (without being too crowded) and the ending leaves one excited for what's to come and unnerves. The mystery has grown a lot in depth and complexity since it first began and it is neither simplistic or convoluted, it's always absorbing too. The character writing is on point, especially for Eleven.

To conclude, brilliant. 10/10.

Eleven Meets Her Mother
Samuel-Shovel10 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Dig Dug", Hopper investigates the mysterious labyrinth of tunnels under the town but quickly gets in over his head. Will uses his "now-memory" to look for Hopper with the help of his mom, Mike, and Bob. Eleven leaves home in search of her mother, finding her in a mentally handicapped state. She learns the truth of her and her mother's past. Dustin must trap an ever-growing Dart after he discovers it ate his cat. Lucas tells Max the truth about why the group has been acting so funny lately but she doesn't believe him. Nancy & Jonathan head to a conspiracist to tell him the truth about Barb's past.

Now we're getting somewhere! After a few lackluster episodes to start the season, we actually get some plot development and nice scenes in this one. Eleven's interactions with her mother are pretty heartbreaking and the most moving of the episode. Hopper's scenes are the other memorable highlights. This one was well-acted with little superfluous dialogue or shots.

I am getting extremely tired of all the nudging and winking relating to 80's nostalgia franchises (i.e. Hopper's Indiana Jones-like hat grab, etc.). It really just takes me completely out of it. I know it's suppose to be a homage but it feels too forced. They need to tone that portion back. Other than that, a good hour of television.

Chapter Five: Dig Dug (#2.5)
ComedyFan201020 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hopper being trapped in the tunnel was a pretty exciting part of the episode. I was really worried he might die. I really like the character. It was also made very well how they ended up finding him with help of Bob. Eleven going to see her mother was so far the best part she had in this season. It was a good scene where she found out that her mother doesn't function well anymore and saw how this happened.

Chapter 5
bobcobb3012 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As popular a character as Eleven has been, she hasn't had the right story at all this season and her journey to meet "mama" was a little ridiculous. While most critics will say Stranger Things was better than The OA last year, I thought that show handled supernatural and alternate dimensions better than this episode did here.

Still pretty fun TV though.

Why no one takes horror seriously as a genre.
vaklavkoca8 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hey I think that there is a monster in this system of underground tunnels. You know what would be a good idea? For me to go alone into the middle of the woods without telling anyone where I'm going. The tunnels, you ask? They're about 10 feet tall. My escape plan you ask? I don't know, I'm just going to jump into this hole I dug in the ground, which I also dug about 5 feet deep. How to I play to get out you ask? I guess Eleven will probably telekinesis me out at the last second.

10 minutes later. Oh no I'm trapped in these tunnels. Where did I go wrong??? 10 minutes after that.

Okay, so this cop is trapped in the tunnels. Using magic we've found out where he's hiding, cool. So, we can see these tunnels. There's a hole about 5 feet deep, and the tunnels go down another 10. So we've brought two people this time. So one of us will surely stay above ground and maybe have a ladder? Or perhaps just hold the shovel so the other two can climb up? Nope, lets's both jump down in this hole. Our escape plan? Umm. Umm. Oh good these US agents happen to show up to save the day.

These are the most stupid characters ever. This is why no one takes horror seriously as a genre. People just write these characters to be unbelievably stupid.

We just heard on the radio that there is an escaped convict with a hook for a hand and a thirst for blood? Better go to make-out point and sit on the roof of our cars in the dark.

I dug it.

Warning: Spoilers
Five episodes in and the show still has a lot of questions to resolve. Let's hope they wrap things up in a satisfactory manner over the course of the remaining chapters. In Dig Dug, Jim Hopper explores the upside-down tunnels stretching under the town of Hawkins, spreading the influence of the shadow monster. As he wanders the tunnels, he is attacked by the vines and rendered helpless. In another part of town, Dustin is busy tackling Dart, the cat-eating tadpole that looks to be growing into a demogorgon, while Nancy and Jonathan visit the conspiracy guy to try and reveal the truth, Lucas tells Max about what happened last year, Bob the Brain susses out Will's drawings, leading to the rescue of Jim, and Eleven travels to find her mother. Dig Dug wraps things up with the scientists of Hawkins lab turning up at the tunnels to cremate the vines, which results in Will having a seizure. Like I said, there's a lot going on—plenty for fans of the show to mull over and more than enough to keep them happy until the next episode. In 5 seconds, 4, 3, 2, 1…

Um, Will..?
funnycommentor7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The plot of the 5th episode, was interesting and very intense. Eleven, went outside looking for her mom and when she contacted with her, she saw flashbacks of when she was born. Those flashbacks, were so intense and so sad.. Max, was told by Lucas, the whole story about the "Upside Down", but I don't think she believed him. Billy, he's still so silly. Mike, was so supportive towards Will. However, I still kinda dislike him, because of his bad behavior towards Max. Moreover, Joyce found Jim, because he was missing. Last but not least, the ending was so unexpected.

S2.E5 - Beautiful Episode [9/10]
panagiotis19935 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S2. E5) My Live Reaction / Review for Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 5 ''Chapter Five: Dig Dug''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Jim is in this cave, is this part of the upside down? Dustin is lying about the cat, his poor mother thinks that the cat is alive. They should kill Dart. Jim needs help soon or he is going to die. Its so tragic what happened to Eleven's mom, they took her child and then tortured her and made her forget. Im so glad they were able to help Jim. What was that ending with Will screaming? Really creepy. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.

Not so good
gianmarcoronconi4 July 2022
In this episode we understand how the only interesting part is that of the animal and that the stuff of the holes in the ground is useless like that useless stuff of the gang of 11.
