- Despite the heavy topic of the musical the show is actually quite humorous and is a feel good experience.
- This film is set in 1962 when racial segregation was common several instances of this are shown such as a rope separating black and white teens at a dance party, the detention room being full of black students and black dancers only being allowed to perform once a month on a popular TV show the word negro is used during these scenes.
