Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me” is in development for the big screen, and everyone is asking the same question: Who will have the honor of playing the part?
As “Wicked” approaches, Jon M. Chu announced Thursday that his next project will be an adaptation of Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me.” The biopic will explore the life of the superstar and what she has endured getting to where is is today.
“In June 2021, the whole world was listening as Britney Spears spoke in open court. The impact of sharing her voice—her truth—was undeniable, and it changed the course of her life and the lives of countless others. ‘The Woman in Me’ reveals for the first time her incredible journey—and the strength at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history,” book publishers Simon & Schuster wrote in its synopsis of the project.

There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.
One company that is looking to bridge that gap is BroadwayHD, which launched in 2015 and has been a platform for filmed theatrical productions and stage-to-screen adaptations ever since. Yes, Ariana Granda has called Kristin Chenoweth for advice on playing the upcoming big screen version of Glinda in “Wicked.” And on Wednesday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Chenoweth revealed that she told the pop star to take full advantage of making the character her own.
Set to release its first part this Thanksgiving, “Wicked” tells the origin story of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the green girl who would go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West. In the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, Grande will play Glinda, originated on Broadway by Chenoweth, and Cynthia Erivo will play Elphaba, the role originated by Idina Menzel.
Grande and Chenoweth are longtime friends — according to Chenoweth, she’s known the singer since Grande was 10 years old — and even worked together on projects like “Hairspray Live!” and “The Voice.” So, naturally, Grande was nervous taking on the role.

When Apple TV+’s new musical series “Schmigadoon!” first started revealing its cast, fans were elated to see that Kristin Chenoweth and Dove Cameron would be teaming up yet again. But upon realizing the actresses wouldn’t be playing mother and daughter, that excitement turned to confusion — and for some, even heartbreak.
Of course, those fans would be forgiven, considering how much Chenoweth and Cameron look alike — and, well, considering they’ve done it not once, but twice before. Chenoweth played the Maleficent to Cameron’s Mal in Disney’s “Descendants” as well as the Velma Von Tussle to her Amber Von Tussle in “Hairspray Live!”

Good morning Baltimore! And Los Angeles! And Chicago! Slowly but surely, the country is reopening city by city, state by state, after more than a year of Covid restrictions. To celebrate, James Corden crafted a whole Broadway number — with the help of Ariana Grande — to say farewell to lockdowns.
Sung to the tune of “Good Morning Baltimore” from “Hairspray” — though in a much lower key, so both of their voices can make it work — Corden and Grande frolic around the streets of California, celebrating all the things they can do now. It requires a bit of an outfit change for Corden, who naturally starts the video wearing a bathrobe (the unofficial dress code of quarantine times).
“Oh, oh, oh, woke up today feeling okay. Wow, this is new!” Corden sings. “Oh, oh, oh, got the vaccine and it’s been two weeks, there’s life in the streets!”

NBC is getting a New Deal for Christmas, as it gets back into the live TV musical business with “Annie Live!” Set to air during the holidays, “Annie” also represents a homecoming of sorts for producers Bob Greenblatt and Neil Meron.
Greenblatt, of course, is the former NBC Entertainment chairman who found success in bringing live musicals to the network, starting with “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013. Meron and the late Craig Zadan were the producers behind that special, which was a tremendous hit — averaging 21.8 million viewers in live+3 ratings. It spawned follow-up events including “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014, “The Wiz Live!” in 2015, “Hairspray Live!” in 2016 and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” on Easter in 2018.
“Annie Live!” landed at NBC after being shopped to all four major broadcast networks. “NBC is where we started these live musicals and I still have so much affection for it,” Greenblatt said.

The CW has found its Powerpuff Girls. Chloe Bennet (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Dove Cameron (Descendants) and Yana Perrault (Jagged Little Pill) are set as the leads in the network’s The Powerpuff Girls live-action pilot.
Written by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier and directed by Maggie Kiley based on the original Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls follows the trio, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crimefighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Bennet will portray Blossom Utonium. Though she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, Blossom’s repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, and she aims to become a leader again — this time on her own terms.
Cameron will play Bubbles Utonium.
