A great surprise at the Torino Film Festival
vkala3 December 2012
http://24fpsverite.wordpress.com

For the majority of the western audience, a film from India is usually related with Bollywood themes, musicals, romantic comedies and silly action films. Fortunately there still exist a different way of filmmaking that will appeal to more eclectic tastes. I.D. is the debut film by the Indian director Kamal K.M. and participated in the official competition of the 30th Torino Film Festival. Even if it was projected during the last days of the festival, I.D. became an instant favorite for the audience and won the relevant Torinosette reader's award too.

Charu (Geetanjali Thapa) is in her mid-twenties, she has recently moved to Mumbai, she is searching for a high paid job in marketing and lives with her friends in a sky-rise rented apartment. One day a workman (Murari Kumar) comes to her home to paint a soiled wall. Charu doesn't know about that appointment since her flat mate had booked it. After a while the man seems that has fainted and lies on the floor. She is in panic and she must do something for him. Since she doesn't know anything about that man she must take the responsibility to help him by herself. That will be the start of her trip to find that man's lost identity.

This is almost a purely script based film and Kamal K.M. who is also the writer did an excellent job. He started with a common idea of the lost identity but he worked in a different way. It is an intensive and complete work that is well presented to the audience. Charu will have to explore a whole different world in her search of an unknown identity. She must travel throughout an extensive metropolis like Mumbai just to have bits of information and some help from the authorities. She must have an abrupt meeting with every day's bureaucracy and big city's absurdity, which might also be unknown to her. If the urban environment appears like a jungle to her when she has to move to the outskirts of the city she will have to face the real degrading face of today's India. She represents the promising future of India but she must deal with everything that is hidden far away from the skyscrapers.

I.D. is a clearly divided film and rises through the time. The first half starts like a typical drama which is succeeded by thriller and follows some parts of mystery. The second part is a purely realistic documentary that doesn't try to cover anything. Both parts are quite fairly balanced so the final result is quite appealing. Geetanjali Thapa adapts to both situations even if in the second part she is not as present as before since the new protagonists are the real people she must meet. According to the director the film was shot in real locations with real people so that adds another point of that obscure realism that we never see.

It is also worth mentioned that I.D. is also the first film by a new Indian company Collective Phase One which aims to help independent filmmakers that simply love making films and they don't need to deal with big studios. Definitely I.D. is a film that could stand out the usual festival cycles and could have a broader distribution, not only limited to one region. You can always feel that your identity is lost.

Great performance but cliché killed the movie being great

Warning: Spoilers
Strarting of movie build up with great plot but start loosing just before the half way. Main character played the part very well. However, the whole part of holding the painter mobile with running around is just too irritating. Also part of fighting with contractor to go to police is useless. she could have just given the mobile to Police and contractor details would have done the job very well.

keep searching for ID on her own and getting into difficulty would have be best.

Mind Numbingly Dull

What a mind numbingly dull movie. I cannot understand how this thing won 4 awards. I watched the whole movie thinking "so something might happen now" however the movie just goes on and in like a listless half dead person watching paint dry. I would honestly not waste 1.5 hours of my life watching this. The acting is very basic and nothing different from normal TV serials. Please don't waste your life watching this.

Bit disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
I recently watched this movie. To be frank I am a bit surprised that this movie won so many awards and nominations. It is more like a documentary with a dull plot, than a movie. I sincerely appreciate the director's effort to show the state of the society, the bureaucracy involved everywhere, and realistic scenarios. Kudos to the actress for doing a great job.

The movie would have been much better if the ending was different. I don't expect a cinematic happy ending for such genre, but some kind of closure would have been appropriate.

There are a lot of unnecessary elements in the movie; for eg; the day after Charu goes to the contractor's home to confront him for not helping her, he goes to visit her at her apartment, he is accompanied by a group of seemingly thugs who apparently intimidate him from approaching the police. This particular scene is no way relevant to the movie plot.

All in all, it is an average movie with bad screenplay and editing, but a great documentary.

I cannot believe i spent an hour of my life watching this garbage excuse of a Movie. A Painter drops dead in her Apartment, she tries to find out who his family are, couldn't find it, movie ends. What exactly was the point of this movie to begin with ? Why even bother going through great lengths of coming up with a Movie for such absolutel crap ? And Netflix, why don't you ever screen movies before you have them on your service?

The Worst Waste of Time Ever
indraveer7 June 2018
I have seen thousands of movies in my life and some really bad ones but none as bad as this one! I simply fail to understand who would want to make such a meaningless movie and why would anyone participate in it. I agree, people have a right to watch bad movies if they want to but Netflix and other multi media industry should have a minimum requirements of some values that movies should meet to be carried on their platform. This movie has no value whatsoever except to waste your time and leave you angry at the end!

BAKWAS
niamatshafiq25 March 2018
The most bakwas movie i have ever watched till date. Is this a movie? Can someone explain it to me? The theme was that she was trying to help . But i didn;t get the logic of being asking from people about the dead person again and again and showing it to us? We just knew that she is realy trying hard, dont show it again and again and again and again.. made it boring , bakwas and time wasting
