Felt like I got the pipe taken to me
davidgnowak7 October 2013
First time ever writing a review, mostly because after I watched this episode I came to the IMDb page and saw two reviews both worth less than the crap on the bottom of my shoes.

Holy Smokes! I don't have to mention any of the plot lines, either your unfamiliar with the show and they are spoilers, or you have already seen the episode and who needs a recap? Let me just say that as much as I have loved the show, I have the feeling that the main protagonists have been *relatively* exempt from the fall out stemming from their illegal activities. Sure, plenty of ancillary characters die from time to time, and Season 2 Episode 1 was a horrible thing for Gemma, but watching this episode ripped my guts out. Season 5 episode 2 had a really brutal scene where I felt for one of the sons, but I repeat, this episode was a horror to watch.

That said, I gave it a 10/10, because as deserving as this series is, this episode was one of most emotionally gut wrenching of all episodes of all time. Not quite the horror the Red Wedding episode was in Game of Thrones, but I tip my hat to the writers, actors, and directors involved with this show that have made it so special that I am emotionally vested in their fictional characters.

If you watch this episode, you will be shocked and hurt and dazed, but grateful that this show could take you on such a visceral ride.

Rip to my absolute favorite

Warning: Spoilers
The episode was great, but Opie's death nearly made me quit the show. It was by far the saddest and most difficult to watch death in any TV show or movie I've ever seen. I don't think I'll ever forgive Kurt Sutter.

Laying Pipe (#5.3)

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, this show is genius. They keep on making episodes where one absolutely doesn't expect what is about to happen. And this time they made it a very tragic one.

From the moment Pope gave his requirements I had no idea what Jax will do and how it will end. And I sure didn't expect that Opie will end up getting beaten to death there. It is definitely a loss of a very good character and I am curious how it will influence Jax. His attitude towards Tig was kind of frightening.

Pope is definitely the most ruthless villain they had so far. Killed so many people. Burning alive, being beaten to death. I am sure this season will bring more, it is just starting.

I am at loss for words. This episode just breaks me. Pope is the most ruthless villain so far Stahl, Jimmy,.. Is nothing compared to him. His acting is brilliant as well. His demands were half of the coke transport money to him and one of the sons inside dead exept for Tig. Opie sacrificed himself and gets beaten to death. It surely will change Jax, I hope not in a negative way but I'm afraid watching your best friend die like that will not change you positively. Thank you Ryan Hurst for portraying Opie, he was one of my favourites.

Best performance: Ryan Hurst

One of the Best and that's saying something

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is one of the most shocking and touching in the series history. I'm guessing that was the intention. Interestingly, it was directed by Adam Arkin who was a key player ins series 2. In this episode we say goodbye to Ryan Hurst and his beloved character of Opie in captivating television drama, (proving once again that no actor on the show has a permanent job and really shouldn't go for any high end purchases). It is a touching but horrifying farewell and it also creates a whole new storyline for Jackson (Charlie Hunman) who can now navigate without his moral compass (I didn't make that up. I read it in an interview with Kurt Sutter). It also has one of the funniest scenes ever when Juice (played Theo Rossi who is just as good at comedy as he is at drama) gets offered some "comfort" at the brothel. Ten out of ten hands down. It's a violent piece but it absolutely captivating. I'll miss Ope though, he was lovely.

I'm just catching up now on this show, and I gotta tell you guys... it's excellent but it's definitely gut-wrenching. I don't know how much suffering Jax can endure before he breaks, but I would definitely lose it if my best friend got beat to death in front of me. I mean... HOW DARE YOU, FX?! We get to know these characters, we get to love the kindness in them... and yet CLAY is still alive? This episode has been the most emotional of all, with Tara struggling between her own personality and Gemma's new traits in her and the club losing a very important piece. I'm not quite sure though, what will happen with Pope... I got so mad I wished Jax would retaliate right away (which wouldn't be smart, but let's face it... he does have a short fuse).

Warning: Spoilers
This show really knows how to tug on your heart strings huh. I'm reviewing as I watch so I don't know what happens next but up to this point, nothing in this show has hit me like Opie's death. There's been a lot of tear jerkers but this is the one that got me to bawl.

There was a lot of foreshadowing after Donna's death. Opie risked his life several times so you had a feeling his death was inevitable but nothing could've prepared me for this moment. Opie forcing the police to put him in the pen by head-butting the guard was much like his character and this was the "get out" card he always wanted. The combination of the anxiety, screaming and banging made this feel like the longest 5 minutes of my life.

The acting from all 4 Sons and the little details in the scene was incredible to say the least. Chibs screaming and pounding on the window. Tig looking away because he can't bear to see what he essentially caused. Jax crying while watching but looking away once he's dead, as they continue to strike Opie's corpse. You could see a flick being switched in Jax as his eyes turn stone cold. I have a feeling things are going to get a lot more darker in the following episodes but that's what I'm all for.

This was the perfect ending for a guy who felt he had nothing more to lose and was one of the hardest scenes I've had to watch. RIP to my favourite Ope.

Sons of Anarchy Laying Pipe

Warning: Spoilers
The police have finally gotten their way and the sons are in the local prison and protected by a cartel they made a deal with. Gemma is still with Nero. Back at the club I guess Clay will take over again with Jax locked up inside. Jax is asked to kill again which would be a bad choice. When Gemma try's to visit her grand children once again she finds out that Tara is trying to keep her away from her children. Clay is suspicious of who Gemma is sleeping with and it seems to be getting to him as he says she is all he has left. Gemma really wants to see the kids so she visits Wendy (Drea De Matteo) telling her that Tara may have a drug problem which could get Wendy back her kids but most importantly the kids back in Gemma's life. When Jax needs to see a guard he starts a fight in the yard which gets down to a strip search. When Wendy gets to Tara she confronts saying she is Abel's mother, then Tara gets mad that Gemma is playing Wendy so she calls her a junkie motorcycle whore. This will probably lead to Wendy trying to get her child back. When Jax is asked to point out someone in the field he then must tell Obie some information that makes him angry. Gemma seems to be really getting Tara's nerves and now she tells her that her husband might kill if she gets too far. Clay makes his way to Nero's hangout at we get to see Clay go for Emma Jean (Ashley Tisdale). When Gemma gets there we see her try to kill Emma for killing her ex which is great to see this Disney star be able to get down and dirty with these actors. The sons have been told that one of them must die but they do not go with that plan. When Obie acts out he's the one that must take the hit to keep the club alive. So when he is put into the in with three other inmates we see him get killed in a very bad way. We knew a character would die but Inever thought they would choose him to be the one gone. Back the brothel and we find out that Emma has left to another business. The brothel at the end is being searched by the police and Gemma was there so she gets taken away with everyone there, even one person getting shot. Great episode and it was sad to see a main character get killed off like he did.

EPISODE GRADE: B+ (MVP: Katey Sagal)

Laying Pipe Episode (Spoilers!!!!)
Ellyott27 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I really like the show and chars. That being said...sometimes i feel like quitting. Opie gets brutally killed in prison to protect the 9ers street cred? Wow! One would think burning Dawn alive in front of Tig would cover that... The writers killed the entire family Donna, Piney and now Ope. It is ridiculous. Just my penny.

I wanted my post to be short and to the point, but since i have to write ten lines...i guess i just keep typing until this ridiculous requirement is fulfilled. I have no idea why they need reviews with 10 lines. I like my posts being short and to the point and not raging on for what feels like an eternity. Nobody is going to read reviews that long anyway...i am a men of few words...whats not to like...

Too far....
jason-hill027 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
What happens to Opie in this episode is too far.

It's extreme for the mere sake of being extreme.

In the previous episode, he shows up to stand by Jackson's side. It was an amazing moment. Then this crap - it's like the writers grasp and grope to bring everyone to the brink of disgust at some of the characters. Take Gemma, for example. All of a sudden she goes to Jax's ex-wife?? Seriously? The Gemma in this season is a caricature of her old self, and again it's for the sake of creating more drama. The show is dramatic enough, and Jax is in a tough enough situation, but this need to top last season has created unrealistic characters and situations that I just can not stomach any more.

I'm done with the show. I stopped watching at that point, deleted the show from my DVR, and I'll not watch another episode.

Furthermore, I was on the verge of buying the previous seasons on DVD. Now, thankfully, I'm saved the cash.

Cheers, folks.

Chibs instead of Opie
cyprata23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love all the characters equally but in my honest opinion it should have been Chibs that sacrificed himself and not Opie. Chibs in one of the older members of the club and has served more time than Opie. I was also sad when Clay killed Piney, the original senior member but Chibs in my eyes is also a senior member. Opie could have also been a great vice president just like Jax originally wanted and do more for the family than Chibs. Surely others say the bond between Jax and Opie is like blood brothers and that's why they shouldn't have killed him and should have went with another brother of Jax.
