That's a fine first episode.

A young couple move into a mansion, a lavish house that is already occupied by a hoard of ghosts from across history.

I am not going to fall into the trap of comparing each episode with the original, British version, instead I will give it the courtesy it deserves, and see it with fresh eyes. It's definitely less subtle, I think that's fair to say.

First thing, there are quite a lot of ghosts, it's going to be interesting to see how they give any of them air time, it's pretty crowded back there.

They have definitely sexed it up a little, and I can understand why, Thorfinn, if I was haunted by him, I wouldn't find it a hardship! So far I like Trevor and Alberta, Pete is intentionally irritating.

Samantha and Jay are sweet, and I really did enjoy the way that she was given the ability to see The Ghosts, neat idea.

Fine start, 8/10.

This has possibilities

This cuts across cultural and historical lines. I can see dozens of story lines and the opportunities for numerous cameos from the more well known members of Hollywood. We're looking forward to seeing where they go with this.

This show has a refreshing, clean story line with a multicultural cast. I love it!!! Love the diversity! It's funny and I can't wait for the next episode. There is so much possibility for interesting stories! I'm hooked!!

Note to the Executives of this show: the reality is Not everyone is interested in reality TV, or shows with people who do not have integrity. I show is good TV. The canceled show Debris was also good TV. Thanks for listening.

Not bad

Watched expecting to hate this. US versions of UK comedies generally suck (as do UK versions of US ones.)

But it was actually OK. The changes to the characters made sense with the different histories of our countries, it had it's own thing going whilst keeping the spirit of the original.

This might just turn out to be another office, a comedy that actually translates well

Looking forward to where they take it. Tyke much longer series in America mean they're going to have to come up with their own stories, which should be fun.

Not loving the pantless wall St guy so far, he's not as sleazy as our version, but maybe he'll grow on me.

It grew on me.

I have to say that I enjoyed this pilot and look forward to next weeks show. Fun cast. Good writing. No weak spots were evident. This has the makings of a light fun escape from the daily bad news.

Awful
sezzysez198116 August 2023
Awful. I really struggled to even get through the whole pilot episode.

If I could rate this a 0 I absolutely would would done so.

The characters were awful.

It was not funny at all.

The acting was not great.

The lead actor and actress had no chemistry at all and they did not appear to even act like the young married couple they were supposed to be portraying.

The original Ghosts is so much better than this.

If you haven't watched the original UK Ghosts then I'd recommend watching it before trying this.

What more can I say to fill up the remaining required characters. It was boring!!!!!

Nope.

Though this pilot is retelling bit by bit its English counterpart recycling every single gag and plot point it doesn't come out as funny, charming or interesting. The ghosts in the uk version work as caricatures but they're more nuanced, they're not as grotesque and stereotypical. The set in this American version is also as fake as the characters, the stage lighting it's the same as any 3 camera sit com you have seen. It reads very artificial; the delivery and comedic timing of the actors doesn't help as well. I'm sticking to it hoping it finally stops copying the original Ghosts, but if you are starting this without knowing the Uk version, do yourself a favour and go watch Allison and Mike, meet and all the ghosts of Button House.

Pilot
Prismark1020 December 2022
I found the first episode of the British version of Ghosts to be madcap but not always too funny.

The first episode of the American pilot seems more genteel and has less jokes. It also seems to have more ghosts.

The premise is the same. A young couple inherit a vast historical mansion. It is the long lost relative of Samantha and she would like to turn it into a hotel. Her partner Jay is reluctant at first.

The country mansion is inhabited by ghosts from different periods of American history. After a near death incident, Samantha can see them.

To me the laughs of this version is going to be more reliant on the various ghosts. The British versions ha some cynical put downs from the new owners.

Warning: Spoilers
The UK version is not one of my favorite shows, but it is just sharper and has more of an original feel to it. This had a few jokes, but most of them don't work with an American style.

A poor imitation
MaxC-King1 March 2022
I know the creators of the UK original version of this show were involved in the production of this US version, but it is very sad... I actually think/hope the UK version is still being produced so I am not really sure why this sub-par copycat is being made. All I can think is that the UK folks thought Americans needed a dumbed down version because the acting is so juvenile and all the jokes are hand-fed to the audience, in a condescending way. You cant mimic Mary she's one of a kind!!! And don't even get me started on the US version of Lolly's character, just sad.

Just doesn't really work
eleanorsilcock28 December 2021
Everything this copies from the BBC sitcom (and it copies a lot) it does worse and everything original they do rarely hits the mark. 95 percent of this episode is copied from the original, and I don't blame them, its a pilot, however when you attempt to do traditionally British dry sarcastic humour with only Americans (and not to mention the counterparts to the original characters are much more lively and expressive) it never comes out as funny as the original.

With that said I don't think this show has a complete lack of potential, there's definitely something there, they just have to make it their own and stray away from copying the original too much.

Awful.
wotcherscamp25 April 2022
This could have been a lot better if the storyline and characters were inspired by the original Ghosts instead of a sloppy cut and paste. The majority of the ghosts are lacking personality and depth, but that could be said for the "livings" as well. It's painfully obvious which actors have more experience than the others. Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar are terrible together, with zero chemistry and emotions that never quite meet the eyes. The American interpretation of the British ghosts are extremely disappointing and mostly just...annoying.

Giving it a chance
duncan_buchanan7 November 2023
This is a pale comparison to the British version. Characters essentially replacing the British versions do not match the quality of the original. And characters that are technically new are also very stereotypical. I get that the setting and characters along with a lot of the humour from the British version may not work for an American audience, sounds like the cast from the original understood this as well, but this doesn't bode well for the rest of the series. Hopefully it beds in quickly, stops spoon feeding the audience, reduces the over acting and makes different choices in plot so it's harder to compare against a far superior product.

I came to this because I finished the Brittish version and wanted to see what the American one was like. I figured it would be a slow start for the first episode but wow, this was genuinely bad television. I'm 25 and every character felt like it was the mustache twirling cartoon version of the stereotypical trope an early-20s writer would imagine in their head. The entire episode was as formulaic as it comes and felt like a committee decided what jokes would be in it. I kept feeling like if I rolled my eyes any harder they might just keep going (and as bad as that joke is its better than any in the episode, sadly). Other reviews of the show have said it finds its footing and voice later so I'll continue watching. I'm not even going to compare it to the brittish one either, this was thr epitome of network televisions shortcomings.
