Great, but feels like it's missing something
snakehead-1627823 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the episode a lot. I feel like this is similar to pre-episode I Obi-wan and Qui-Gon. The villain was a little too "wacky" for my taste but dang that was some good animation during the fights. It felt more like a pilot episode than a standalone thing though, it seems like there's a lot that the creator(s) wanted to do with these characters but was limited. I would've liked for this episode to push the envelope a little further with the violence/trauma experienced by the characters. That probably sounds messed up but I feel like if you've seen the episode then you thought/hoped this would've been "darker" than it ended up being.

Exciting And Impressive
theempop24 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is the tension that I wanted in 'The Duel'. This episode feels more like a samurai duel, in the fight of the mind first. The staring and waiting before the action begins heightens the feeling of the moment, as opposed to the immediate action most of the others offer. The time before the actual fight helps as well, as we get to meet the Jedi and Padawan who will be fighting the Sith. We get to see the Qui-Gon-esque compassion and Force appreciation from the master (I totally called his lightsaber being green. Dude's obviously a Consular), as well as the friendliness and trust in his master from the Padawan. While these characters are kind of one-dimensional on screen, they are appealing because of that dimension, and they are still believable and likeable (the Padawan's obedience to his master is such a breath of fresh air after hot heads like Anakin and Ahsoka). These characters make you care for them enough to wonder, and yes, worry, about how the duel is going to end. I must admit, the actual end disappointed me slightly (too consequence free through some freak instance of luck? Not gonna explain that?) Though this redeemed Trigger in my regard after 'Twins'.

Nice philosophical touch
leoseimetz25 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get why people are complaining about the writing/dialogue on other reviews. I loved the philosophical touch at the dialogues on this episode. It's not anything complex (and it can't be on a 15 minute episode), but it's simple and sufficient. Doesn't feel forced or anything. I really liked the bad guy talking about why Sith became extinct, and the final part when the master tell the padawan about the impermanence of things. Certainly an eastern philosophy touch on this (the jedi philosophy on main Star Wars movies is inspired on buddhism as far as I know).

One thing I really don't like is the "sword" lightsaber, seems kinda pointless. Just go for the normal lightsaber, lol. But it didn't affect the episode quality. 10/10!

Good

Very good and interesting story. I love the idea of learning jedis meeting unusual and mysterious sith lords. However the fights didn't quite get too me (definetly not the main focus of the episode).

Always wanted a show like this
evoapollo3 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So before I review this I'm going to say that when I was in My teens I had loved the idea of a master and aprentice going on adventures hunting sith and helping people much like in the phantom menace or attack of the clones where qui gon and obiwan or obiwan and and anakin went on adventures together. I knew there was a time in star wars where there was a sith empire-an empire purely of sith, and there were jedi knights to fight them. This episode gave us a glimpse of the awesomeness of the life of a jedi and their missions. One of the BEST out of this anthology series please make a show out of this disney.

G'Vash and a brush up.
southdavid29 November 2021
This was another episode of "Star Wars Visions" that I really enjoyed and would be up for seeing expanded into a wider series.

A Jedi Master, Tajin Crosser (David Harbour) and his padawan, Dan G'vash (Jordan Fisher) are patrolling the outer rim. Having sensed something off with the Force in a particular sector, the pair land on Habo and following discussions with the locals, split up to search for another recent arrival, an old man who is up in the mountains. Though Tajin warns his younger apprentice to be wary, Dan is eager for a fight, but when he locates the old man (James Hong) he discovers that, despite his aged appearance, he's more than a match for him.

As I say, this was another enjoyable edition of the series. It looked really good and the old man was quite a creepy villain. The same studio "Trigger Inc" did the Twins episode of the show, which was similarly excellent to look at, but this also has a better story. I can offer no better compliment that, when this episode ended, I would gladly have seen what happened to this Jedi pairing next.

Well made, but not much to it
sevskirita16 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
That's about all I can say about it. The short is well made, well paced, all that. Just not the most interesting concept or execution of it. Kinda disappointing this is what mostly qualifies for these animated shorts.

One of the best ones
nakhesh13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The duel at the end reminded me of the "Old Obi vs Old Maul" duel. Smooth, effective but not eye-candy duels make me more happy than sword swirling, effect blasting animations. Also loved the Qui-Gon vibe of the master character.

The Elder
kaden_lewis18 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't watch anime. This happens to be the first anime I have ever watched. It has just never appealed to me, but I love Star Wars, so I decided to give it a try.

This was one of the top three episodes so far. This episode had an entirely new tone to it. It was very eerie and had a foreboding feeling the whole time. The scene when The Elder was introduced was a very cool scene. Very dark. The Elder is also a very sinister character to begin with. He is an ex-Sith who's fighting styles were nearly unbeatable. He had two red sabers, was incredibly swift and could use the same electricity power as Palpatine. That is why his death knocks a few points off for me. He was killed way to easily. It was a very competitive, incredibly actioned packed fight, The Elder gets distracted for one second and the Jedi finishes him off. Could have been killed a little better. Regardless, this episode still gets a 10/10, especially when David Harbour plays a Jedi. Of course, he did a great job.

An elder without a vision.
Kitahito1 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Tanned Anakin and discount Yasuo going to a periphery planet that was colonized by the 16th century Japan and has not developed anywhere since, but the master feels disturbance in the force because there is so strong evil nearby that causes a moderately unpleasant headaches. They land, conveniently just like 100 meters from the enemy ship, near a village, where during some boring, awkward and escrutiatingly long dialogue, they decide it's time to split up, and the disciple goes up the random mountain alone to see if he runs into the super Sith lord. After about 5 minutes, they indeed met, and after a boring sword fight, tanned Anakin is humanely cut down, and then Yasuo shows up to defeat the Sith, and he does. It turns out that he was old, and... that's about it. After that, the two Jedi talks a little more about time in a monotone tone, and the episode ends.

Yes, it is just as rational and intriguing as it sounds...

Fantastic Action and a great villain
MEdwardsVA23 September 2021
I love how atmospheric this short feels, especially during the first scene where the villain is shown. James Hong gives a fantastically creepy performance and the two leads are likable enough. The final battle is incredibly well staged and I especially loved the way it ended.

Interesting concept
kk-1220823 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Got a phantom menace vibe from it,the master and apprentice, and an enemy with two lightsaber who is probably sith, but outcasted, like what happens to Maul in tcw. The master also mentioned something like he might not win if the elder was younger.

Great but I wanted more
the_noizylobster24 September 2021
I really liked the premise of this episode. The creepy, ancient Sith Lord was a good idea and it was generally kinda spooky. But I was hoping it would lean into the spook but it didn't quite meet that expectation. Honestly less dialogue might have helped, it's one of those things where you don't need an explanation for. I could be wrong but hey that's my opinion. I think the creators needed a little more time to make this episode perfect.

Anyways, one of the most solid episodes. Left a slight bit to be desired.

The old sith lord we've always needed.
noisetanklaw19 December 2021
The old sith lord we've always needed and we could only get through a japanese lense. Its fiction compells an amazing design and also a classic but pleasing samurai showdown ending. Inspiration from local folklore is obvious but astonishing when expresses through this medium.

How many Elders?
Trey_Trebuchet12 December 2022
I suppose this makes the Jedi master an elder to of some kind. I actually loved this.

I watched the English dub; how has David Harbor not been in anything Star Wars related until now? That seems like such an obvious casting. He was great here.

I thought this wa s yet another fascinating piece of Star Wars lore, and I doesn't feel very detached from canon stuff. Hearing them discuss how and why the Sith went extinct was cool. This period of Star Wars was one of my favorites in the Legends books.

The animation is once again beautifully done, with some decent choreography. My only complaint is the weird, drawn out silences. Not sure it's that big of a deal but it felt awkward to me.

Still, great stuff. This is another story I'd like to hear more of.

Nothing really happened
chasetmcfadden23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I felt like this episode had potential, but nothing really happened.

There was a lot of dialog building the audience up to this fight scene, and the fight scene ended incredibly quickly. Sure there was 2 neat moments in the fight scene, but it just didnt feel like a fight between two super powerful characters that the episode was building us up to the whole time.

And I wouldnt have minded all that if it was a decent story. But it wasnt much of a story at all. The characters didnt develop or learn much of anything. I just think they could have used the time they had a lot more wisely. All the dialog at the beginning could have been cut down a lot, and they could have developed this ominous post-Sith character a little more, or developed either of the two main characters more with something other than exposition.

Best of the series!
kesso-632-37330929 December 2021
Mainly because it was truest to star wars but also because it's approach to light saber duels is true to logical swordsmanship, not to be flashy like in normal star wars fashion, but true to how a real swordsman would fight with a sword made of LIGHT. Just like Corridor Crew approached it on their Youtube short.

Also a very nice short story, and voice acting in the English dub was also great.

By far the best episode in Visions! I hope that Disney will use this production company to make a spin off show. This is a must watch.

Surprised at the positive reviews on this one.
dpoland-7658924 September 2021
I am only writing one episode specific review and it's for this episode. The dialogue (and English voice work) was excruciatingly bad.

Decent animation and could have been an interesting story with further work.

One of the worst...

I wish I could give it a zero
karlriemer-1815522 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
How did this get past Pre-production. This episode is a mess and treats me as the viewer as an idiot. Most of the episode is dialog that drones on and on for no reason other than to tell me, the viewer, useless facts that are not important to the episode. I don't believe that I could count on my fingers the amount of time the Padawan character says "I WIsH there Was MoRe AcTion on ThE OuTEr Reach". Like I get it something is going to happen that is important to the develop the plot of the film, but there could be 1 million better ways to transition into the old man character that is introduced to us later in the episode. When we do meet the old man character I was excited to see a shift from stale dialog into the realm of anime style fighting! I was... disappointed. When the old man had two dagger like lightsabers I was beyond stoked to see where the creator's intent with the fight scene was. What I received was the old man wishing for the glory days of his youth and very underwhelming fight sequences that end in the Padawan not even dying. What does the Jedi character lose? How does he develop? Why do I care? Is the purpose of this episode to make me feel confused as to why it is positively reviewed? This single episode felt longer than every other episode combined because ultimately nothing happens. Nothing changes in terms of character development. The master doesn't change his relationship with his Padawan at all. The Master Jedi character's only function is to say I have a bad feeling about this, and talking about the past. It is embarrassing that this episode was allowed to be aired on Disney+. I will say the redeeming quality of this animation was the backgrounds being fantastic. Every background captured my attention because it was more exciting to think another story was happening outside of the main plot the viewer is presented. Remove this episode from the otherwise good season. The animation is clunky and hard to watch. The action that does happen is smooth, but the other twelve minutes of this film is a side shot of the Padawan looking at the kids in the village saying "man I sure am good at climbing mountains" I could have been presented this info by watching the Padawan character climb a perilous journey to the top of the mysterious planet's landscape. For those who gave this a positive review I don't understand how you can call this a story. At the end of the episode the old man blows up his ship, and turns into a pile of coal. WHY DO I CARE THAT THE SHIP BLEW UP THERE IS NOT A SINGLE STORY POINT WHERE SOMETHING ON THE SHIP IS IMPORTANT TO OUR CHARACTERS! 0/10.

Started OK. Slow but decent dialogue.
wcparry223 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Theeeeen like almost all of this tragedy of an un-Star Wars series, boom, curved at the tip style lightsabers. Just bad, come on. The Elder is, okay himself, but the whole :"bad guy haz green teef bcuz: reasons" dumb. Fridging, then bringing the padawan back (Was this one written by the person everyone calls whrn they need ideas for lampshading? Seriously, it was just was bad writing. . Most of these have been predictable though, with a hefty dose of lampshading scattered throughout the whole set. At least this one wasn't as bad as TO-B1. I wish I could go back in time and not watch it but then again aside from the Elder (his death was great actually) and the Ninth Jedi I feel that way about the entire series. 5/10 in a series of -10/10 shorts. Maybe hire writers that actually like Star Wars,i don't know I am not a media proffesional, because the people who wrote these obviously HAVE talent, which means the only logical explanation would be that whoever wrote The Elder and whoever wrote the ninth Jedi were the only two people that actually like Star Wars. The rest were written by people who just hate the SW universe.

Loved this one
sweetums-808627 November 2021
I really enjoyed this one. I wish it was longer and we could get a whole series or full show of this. I really liked the Master-Padawan dynamic and how in this short the universe felt like how Star Wars 'should' IMO. I really like the concept of them feeling darkness for the first time in years and going to find out what it is. This is a great idea for a full series, the darkness is making a return in the shadows and it needs to be taken care of. I know some or many won't agree but this is just my opinion and idc.
