Soap Opera?
Karone482415 January 2021
I agree with the other critical reviews. Parts of this episode was like watching a bad soap opera.

Wasn't very good
sdvick5 December 2020
The acting was horrible! Is this the last season? I've noticed from other good shows that get canceled or end, that the acting, plot etc goes down the toilet in the last season. Like they just don't care.

Still love this show!!
persephonehall7 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've anticipated the premiere for months and was not disappointed. I loved it! We always see Danny and his partner rescuing others/solving the case. It was powerful to watch them deal with being in trouble. The interaction was quite interesting and her ending up at Sunday dinner left me wondering... I love the appearance/ involvement of Joe but wondered about his "I'm busy" response when Jamie invited him to Sunday dinner. I noticed him watching Danny and Jamie when they found them in the basement... I wonder what he was thinking. Whoppi's character is interesting and presents a sentiment that I believe many communities of color have felt toward the police. I admire the writers for going there. I was a little surprised that I did not see people wearing masks and that the pandemic was not incorporated into the new season. This episode felt a little different and I loved it all!!

Whoops

Any continued use of Whoopie Goldberg on "Blue Bloods" is unfortunate for me. The vitriol she brings from her daytime gig is going to foreshadow one of my favorite programs. That's just me, but I'm wondering if others have the same reaction to her presence. Her disrespect precedes her participation in this time honored drama and negates my ability to see past it. I am sorry for that.

What The Hell Was That?
shermanator-434067 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This has always been the best show on television...until this episode. What a load of crap. Whoopi Goldberg?? She spews nothing but hate every time she opens her mouth and never has anything positive to say about any one or any thing...not to mention she's a mediocre actress at best. I'm praying this vile character was a one off...and I'm an atheist!!. I think the powers that be have forgotten who they're audience is and has been for 10 seasons. The story was total garbage and not believable when you put kick ass Danny Reagan in a basement and he doesn't at least try and break down the door? Come on people. Horrible writing. Sorry Siobhan but it was total crap. Bring back the good writers or I'm afraid I'll have to say goodbye to what was once a truly wonderful series. Tom Selleck is my hero.

Don't mess with a great series
kathytexan-1258512 December 2020
Executive Producer Kevin Wade should be taken to the wood shed for messing with one of the best series on television. I read his interview in TV Guide and it looks like his agenda was met with a lot of 1 star ratings. Was Wade the reason Whoopi Goldberg, famous for her mean-spirited bullying on "The View," was featured on the season opener? Was he hoping she might "enlighten" the audience? Aside from the producer's intent, I found the script was mediocre and left their usually fine cast with little to do. Even Sunday dinner - my favorite - fell flat. Not a promising return for the 10th season.

Thanks, no thanks. Ever since she became a hateful, horrible human I'm not interested in anything she's in. Find new actors who don't anger half of your audience.

You have got to be kidding me!
Top_Dawg_Critic5 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So the season premier has Reagan and Baez locked in a basement, and hot head Reagan with his gun can't break open a basement door?! But wait, instead of even trying to break it open - or even shoot the lock, he grabs a blanket (after finding a wrapped up corpse) and cuddles up with Baez and they have a nice reminiscent heart to heart chat? Oh, and they have no cell service in a basement unit in central NYC? Add other family and non family melodramatics, some politically correct race issues, and zero actual real policing (well, they did knock on some doors smh) and let's call this "Little House On The Manhattan Prairie" smh. Whoever wrote this garbage needs to get slapped, fired and banned from writing ever again. Next, fire the producers who approved this garbage. I am a huge fan of this show and have not missed an episode since this series premier on Sept 24th, 2010, and this is by far the worst writing with no close second place. This show needs to bring back past writers because if this trash continues, I'll be cancelling my watching this series.

Logic has left the building
greyfith7 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
No matter all the other issues other reviewers have had with this episode, the horrible illogical writing is what stands out for me, especially with the trapped in the basement part of the story.

Are you kidding me? You have a service weapon. When the cops show up to the door, you don't FIRE THE WEAPON? Probably a heck of a lot more effective than banging on the bloody pipes in the basement. Not to mention that this is Danny we're talking about. He'd try to escape!

The writers should be ashamed.

Deserves a zero rating
jduyrhfngj17 December 2020
I don't understand how any longtime fan of Blue Bloods can give this episode any rating other than a 1. It is simply the worst of the entire series. Ignoring the Whoopi segments, I would have rated this a 5 because the Danny and Baez stuff was just so unbelievable. I give these shows quite a bit of latitude to "Hollywood" their shows. Their part was terrible. In addition, this is the best they could come up with after a shortened season ended that I thought was great. I was wondering where they'd go with the show since Jamie and Eddie married. Was thinking possibly a child, but not so soon - figuring BB is good for several more seasons, at least. The introduction of another family member, the backstory and the character is great. And, finally, for Whoopi, I'll reserve a longish political rant to say she really irritates me. The first time she appeared I was extremely disappointed. Not threatening to pull the plug yet but, if she becomes semi-regular, you can bet on it. To the show runner and writers: we, the real fans, hate her and don't want her back.

What's not to like?
info-518265 December 2020
Weak plot with the lost body story. No policing, just feelings. Far too many plot holes in the Danny & Baez story. Apparently just to lay the ground work for another partnership romance and let us know Joe feels left out. We get to hear Whoopi preach her defund the police nonsense.

As I said, what's not to like?

This show is teetering on me finding something else to do Friday night at 10 (9 Central).

Hmm - Hope it gets better
pattersonjamie-1207910 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Watched this show since day one. This episode was pretty bad. I'll give them a break since COVID has been tough for the TV shows.

No more Whoopi. She uses the View to be a radical.

Danny and Baez getting locked in a basement? Then Danny brings Baez to family dinner. I hope this isn't going to be a new romance. He was better with the profiler.

Tiresome episode.

This was not worth the wait.....
forrestjf8 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched the episode twice just to be fair. But this episode broke the laws of "logical physics" many times. Danny can't break or shoot through a simple wooden door in an old house. Or use his cell phone? Or use Baez's phone? No one can track their car? Then there is the story of Jenko "finding" this man's body. When would she have the time to fight through NYC's idiotic bureaucracy while the man's daughter couldn't do it. I do believe the city staff would be that disorganized and dismissive, but I don't think they would be any better to an NYPD officer. I actually liked the storyline with Regina Thomas. The best part was Garrett's reading of the letter and the especially the "PS" part. That was the highlight of an otherwise bizarre and low quality episode.

Whoopi who?

I gave it a 4 star rating - very generous. I hope they can salvage this show - this is the worst episode- mostly due to Whoopi and partially the script - frustrated!!!

A Sign of Things to Come?
electric-crow5 December 2020
I hope not

I haven't looked to see if BB has new writers, a new director or both but this first episode was bad. The acting was bad and especially Franks script. Even the main plot and subplots seemed like they were just mailed in and revisions of older ones. I'll wait a few more episodes before I decide to stick a fork in it.

Well this was an unfortunate return.
CineFileOnYT6 December 2020
Any review giving this episode 2 stars or higher is hopeful thinking for episodes to come. I notice some other reviews pointing out possible new writers because the script was so bad. Looks like the head writer hasn't changed so I don't think it's that. I think this terrible episode is due to 3 things:

1 - They tried to do too much. They wanted to mention Covid without mentioning it. They wanted to mention the police violence headlines being seen across the country without mentioning specific victims. They wanted to get both sides of that debate in as well which is a departure from the typical BB storyline. They wanted to remind us about Joe. And Eddie's dad. And Danny's hot temper. And Abigail's weird stare down when she closes the office door. It all felt forced and there was no true narrative to the script.

2 - The actors are simply out of practice. If you're a professional basketball player and take 8 months off from the court or even touching a basketball for that matter, your first day back will assuredly feature some air balls. This episode saw a lot of air balls.

3 - A lot of people are mentioning the director or writer for the flaws in this one. I really think it's the editor's fault and I'm surprised considering he's edited over 60 eps in the past. Especially with Frank, they cut into reaction counterpoints too early. He was still in the listening phase of his acting and that extra pause makes the conversation feel clunky and unnatural. This happened..a lot! With not just Selleck either. It's most pronounced in his scenes with the 1PP trio and Erin though. There's a really bad edit with Jamie and Eddie too at one point. As someone who has held the job before, I think they really need to get the editing supervisor to crack the whip on dialogue edits..for the sake of one of my favorite shows.

NOTE: A thing many people don't know is the edits have to fit the commercial schedule sometimes, not the other way around. So, this means, it may not be the editor's fault. He may have had to elongate scenes to fill time to get to the break. This would suggest poor show producing but the problem lies somewhere in there. The edit was a huge problem on this episode..I'm simply speculating as to the cause.

Worst episode! How do I let the producer know?
aky13-16 December 2020
Horrendous writing and acting! Important issues discussed in such a way that the viewer can barely tell what is being discussed! Grossly disappointing resolution to a crisis situation. Btw, "anger" does not substitute for other emotions.

I'm a huge fan of this show. Up until this episode I could never imagine rating ANY episode 1 star!

Writers Have a Brain-Freeze With This One!
spasek9 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Someone beat me to the "Goofs" section with the very obvious flaw in this week's episode. Not sure if the writer(s) was just an amateur or if they just left their brains at home.

Can someone explain to me how a seasoned detective, who is locked in a basement doesn't try to:

1. Shoot the lock off the door. 2. Fire his gun when he hears that someone is at the front door.

You figure that if the audience can quickly pick up on the glaring character error and plot hole, then the writer should have thought about it, right? I couldn't believe that such stupidity left me shaking my head as though a 6th grade creative writer had overlooked the obvious.

This was a fairly aimless episode to begin with. Usually the writing is far better than what we got.

Frank and Speaker Thomas go round and round, debating police conduct and racism. Of course, nothing comes of it except long, tedious, and overblown conversations.

Eddy is stuck tracking down the dead body of a man who somehow got lost. Sadly, this was the actually one of the more intriguing stories of this episode, which just goes to show you how bad it really was.

Let's hope "Blue Bloods" gets back on track next week, and that they either fire the dumb writer of this episode (maybe he was struck with COVID, which caused him to give us a very "amateur hour" episode), or get their current writers to sniff some glue to get their creative juices going again.

Could have been worse
soughtforscores19 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode wasn't as terrible as I expected from other reviews. While there were many plot holes, there was also some nice character development and some interesting aspects. And I love every episode with Joe Hill, and him and Jamie talking about his dad was great! Especially how compassionate Joe is about Danny being missing. So I wouldn't say this had nothing to offer, and it's certainly not bad enough to warrant rejecting the show. Especially since the next episode is highly rated. But anyway, seeing Jamie's reaction when he found Danny made the whole thing worth it; even listening to the annoying lady!

One of the worst episodes of the series
ebeckstr-118 July 2022
Two very experienced detectives and neither one calls in their location before knocking on a door?

To very experienced detectives with guns and they can't signal their location in the middle of a busy neighborhood or defend themselves?

Another very experienced cop knocks on a door canvassing, a guy who is clearly hiding something answers, and the cop just walks away unsuspicious? In every other Blue Bloods episode this exact same scene acted and written in the exact same way would have had the cop following his gut, knowing the guy was hiding something. But in order to draw out the melodrama in this episode, the same cop is, conveniently, a dope this time.

Bias STILL being written as the cliched weak "woman cop," literally reduced to simpering and crying in the corner while she waits to be saved by her manly man partner? I don't know how the actress has put up with it this long.

More down-playing and dismissing of racism among police ranks? And this, in a show set in the city where Eric Garner was strangled to death by a cop. Give me a break. It is professional negligence and just plain old bad writing for a television writer to willfully ignore history in a show that purports to be ripped from the headlines.

And to cap it all off, the most awkward, forced concluding Sunday dinner scene maybe of the entire series. The actors looked and acted like they'd rather be anywhere else and a conversation is filled with that forced awkward laughter that we've all experienced. Shudder.
