Rap's rough culture
bkoganbing10 September 2016
A number of rap artists are in this particular Criminal Intent where Chris Noth and Julianne Nicholson are investigating the murder of a particular rapper. The big brass is following this one closely as the deceased was going to do some public service announcements against gang violence and here he falls victim to it.

A couple of interesting things here. First there's a lot of video as to who was with the deceased that night as he was coming and leaving a big blowout at a club. That gives Logan and Wheeler something to work with once the people are identified.

There's also a detective played by rapper Flipped who is deep undercover who is inserting himself in Major Case's investigation.

As it turns out the deceased was killed for the most pedestrian and stupid of motives. And the perpetrator he gets what's due him.

After seeing this I cling to my Bing Crosby music more and more.

Kids getting killed by street gun player
Mrpalli7727 September 2017
A prominent hip-hop figure (Fab 5 Freddy) is shot killed in the street after an interview with a local DJ. In his lyrics he complained about murders in rap world (citing 2pac and Notorious Big) and he ended up suffering the same fate. Detectives Logan and Wheeler started investigating black community and they were prepared to hit a wall of silence. Even an uncover policeman (who chose to resign later on) was on their list because of his relationship with a witness. Blood rushed throughout the episode till the sad ending.

Wheeler is not comfortable in dealing with this low profile black people, realizing that despite she was moving a lot with her parents, she had someone who could count on as a child, while other people are not so lucky.

Over the edge

The Logan and Wheeler episodes that alternated with those of Goren and Eames in Season 6 were a bit of a mixed bag. None were terrible (none of the previous 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' episodes are) but none were quite on the same level as the best of the Goren and Eames episodes in general. There were great episodes of theirs up to this point, such as "Maltese Cross". There were also ones that could have been a lot better, particularly "Tru Love" and "World's Fair" in my view left me conflicted.

"Flipped" is one of the best Logan and Wheeler episodes in my view, every bit as great as "Maltese Cross" and perhaps even better. As far as Season 6 goes, it is definitely in the top end. Would also go as far to say that "Flipped" is one of the best 'Criminal Intent' episodes to not feature Goren and Eames (where were the episodes where the show when it became less consistent most varied) and very nearly as great as the best of Seasons 1-4. Which is a big compliment.

Photography and such as usual are fully professional, the slickness still remaining. The music is used sparingly and is haunting and non-overwrought when it is used, and it's mainly used when a crucial revelation or plot development is revealed. The direction has some nice tension while keeping things steady, without going too far the other way.

Script is taut and provokes a lot of thought and tense conflict, without being simplistic or over-stuffed. The story has a lot of clever twists and turns that are also shocking (including one of the most unpredictable, in murderer and motive, reveals of the season and in a long time). Tightly and cleverly plotted throughout, "Flipped" keeps one guessing and to what the truth is.

All the performances are great. Love Logan, who has still not lost any of what made him the great character that he was in the early seasons of the original 'Law and Order'. Wheeler is a nice subtle contrast and they actually gel quite well for a duo of such contrasting personalities.

With all that being said, the ending did come over as very rushed and also somewhat abrupt despite being a complete shock.

In conclusion, great and one of the best Logan and Wheeler episodes. As well as one of the best non-Goren and Eames episodes. 9/10

Best Criminal Intent sans Goren & Eames
SylviaToyStLouis3 October 2015
Best L & O Criminal Intent without Goren and Eames. Strong performances from everyone. Powerful, very sobering ending. Chris Noth plays Logan's struggle with his own rage truer than I've seen in any other episode. Julianne Nicholson's professional, tough girl cop demeanor crumbling under the harangue against her by pretty Aunjanue Ellis's Carmen Rivera is completely believable; and it mirrors this episode's powerful story about the very thin, but palpable wall between the police and the black community, which is powerfully played out by the pivotal undercover cop, Sticky Fingaz's Harry Williams, and the brilliantly sadistic murder suspect, Bokeem Woodbine's Gordon Thomas. They are the muscle and guts of this episode - warriors on either side of a wall that cannot be breached by anyone.
