Andy Never Gets a Chance
Hitchcoc21 December 2019
Helen is at the center of Andy's angst. If she would think for one minute, she'd know that the photos and the Hollywood claptrap is there to promote the film. Does she really think Andy is doing his thing with that film star? As usual, he isn't given a chance to explain his situation. She can be a truly tiresome character.

Helen Crump you have ice in your veins

Helen is extremely insecure in her relationship with Andy. This is not the only episode where Helen morphs into a sarcastic witch brought on by unfounded jealousy.

Without Sid Melton & Ruta Lee a total dud

The thing that killed the episode was Andy's uncomfortableness. It just isn't funny dragged out like it was for the last ½ of the episode. A little bit is great. But, the writers looked like they were just looking for a way to kill time. Andy squirming in Darlene Mason's apartment was simply dreadful. Sid Melton was comical calling Mayberry "Blueberry", and just being a little weasel. Ruta Lee was absolutely spectacular on screen. At his best Opie (Ron Howard) was a funny pest when Andy called Darlene. Helen's jealousy doesn't bother me. It actually ignited the Opie & Andy phone scene. Good first half. Unbearable 2nd half up until a funny epilogue.

I agree with reviewer Moakin2005: Another episode with Helen as a witch, the perfect CRUMP!

Helen misused

I always liked Aneta Corsaut, the actress who played Helen Crump. However, from the beginning of her appearance on the show, she often had a conflictive relationship with Andy.

At first, Helen as Opie's teacher was assigning too much homework, and Andy made some derogatory remarks about her. Then a couple of times there were issues with Opie's grades. Over the course of time, Helen almost seemed like she was Andy's girlfriend mostly because he was the Sheriff. There never seemed to be a lot of love or chemistry between them.

So in the first year After Barney, now Helen was often written as a jealous and needy character who was really not funny, and harkened back to jealous wives and lovers in drama and crime fiction, not comedy. Aside from the loss of Barney, the seasons after Barney seemed to have some writing that was not very funny or comedy oriented. The writing was bad.

Having Helen, Andy, and a Hollywood starlet engaged in a jealous cat-fight over long distance was lame. It reminded me of some Perry Mason episodes were a rich guy was involved with a younger woman. That style did not fit Andy Griffith, and it was awkward to watch, and not funny.
