Trust me, even if you have seen Excel Saga, you still won't understand this, because there is nothing to understand. Its just a bunch of crazy stuff happening. This is a crazy take-off of Excel Saga, and since Excel Saga was absolutely crazy to begin with, Puni Puni Poemi truly takes no prisoners. Whilst something like FLCL is insane, this is insane for different reasons. Puni Puni Poemi is more of a 'duh!' kind of insane, with doors opening upwards instead of outwards and super-fast talking schoolgirls, in fact, it is almost impossible to describe just how utterly insane this anime is, just watch it, but be prepared to be turned totally brain-dead.

This is a 2 part OAV spin-off from "Excel Saga" and I dare not compare it to that series as it will pale. But if you take PPP on it's own you will find much to enjoy. Don't fault me for not really going into plot with this review as the plot is really secondary to the parody of other anime, manga, and heinti. It's manic energy, zaniness, hyperness, and spot-on parody will most likely win any Anime fan over after a small while, I do take issue with the characters making asides to "fan service" every now and then as it's more "faux" fan service because there's no follow through in that respect. But maybe that's just another joke. And that may be as the jokes and gags come so fast and often that no one will be able to catch on too them all on the first watch.

This must be a contender for the most insane programme I've ever seen. It it from the makers of Excel Saga but is so hyper active it makes Excel look like a paragon of subtlety and restraint. The lines are delivered machine-gun fast and it is often hard to keep up with the subtitles (thank goodness for the pause button).
The story follows our heroine Poemi who's ambition in life is to become an anime voice actress, during the show she frequently slips out of character and refers to herself as Kobayashi, the name of the real actress providing her voice. Things start fairly badly for her when she returns home from school to find that a strange alien has crucified her parents. She usually refers to her father as "The Director" because the shows real director provides his voice.
Luckily for Poemi she is invited to live with her friend Futaba Aasu and her sisters. She seems totally unaware that Fatuba is in love with her as she is obsessed by a boy who is later shown to be a strange octopus-bodied alien. They then battle against various threats. The plot is secondary to the non-stop jokes and strange and somewhat perverse situations they find themselves in
While the show features a lot of sexual references and nudity, nothing more than the occasional bare bottom is shown. There are a lot of references to other anime and to Star Wars but I don't think it is necessary to have seen them to enjoy this... I've not seen the anime being spoofed (apart from Excel) but had a good laugh at this.

This is the best way to describe this show. It has got to be one of the most random, funny, disturbing, uncomfortable to watch with parents, weird, and just plain pointless shows I have ever seen.
And funny enough, the main character, Poemi, reminds me of some of my friends. There is also plenty of fan service in this film also. Fans of slapstick comedies will love this show.
Definitely not for the kids, no way, no how. Although I'm only fourteen, I don't recommended this for anyone under 16, o.k., well a few people.
As for the rating, 10/10 or A++.

This is just about THE funniest series I've seen to date and that says a lot. I've seen the entire series of Excel Saga and that was crazy enough..... Puni Puni Poemi goes way beyond anything you've seen in Excel Saga. It's crazier, the characters are solid and mesh well, it's funnier and it's easily a "must buy" series in my honest opinion. If you think this is just another off the wall anime, you'd be dead wrong.
I do wish that it was longer though, and that's about the only gripe I have about this series. Please, for the love of Pete, if you like good, wacky slapstick and lots of physical humor, pick this one up. Heck, at least rent it, but get this work of art in your head! (^-^ )v

Sad to say I am dissapointed at this film. Excel saga melted my heart and made my brain do happy little skips. (Couldent resist that ^_^) Although the humor is similar the characters where just so.... But it was nice to see Nabeshin again. Poemi just seems an Excel wannabe. And I get fed up with the magical schoolgirl routine pretty fast. And the overly "ecchi"nes of it all just didnt apeal to me... Maybe I just cant get over the fact that the Excel saga episodes didnt last forever... I cant bear myself to enjoy this, it seems just a hollow copy. Average 6.5(10)

It's pointless, it's random, it's rude and crude, and it's a spinoff of Excel Saga. You've got to love it. The jokes are as random as they can possibly be and that's half the fun. The other half is the great fan service and plenty of it. Most of the fan service is even funny to boot.
Being only two episodes though, it doesn't really have time to become anything more than a quick laugh. Don't expect Excel Saga's great story and you'll have a great time and a lot of laughs. This show was always intended to be Excel Saga on red cordial and sugar bombs. It makes use of a lead actress who talks so high and fast she can induce tinnitus and scare animals. There's no real plot as such, just the join the dots default of 'moei' cute girl series cut up and thrown at the screen. The send ups are of all the conventions and dodgy sexual allusions found in the genre (such as one of the characters continually complaining about the size of her breasts) but no joke stays past it's welcome. In fact they fly by so fast you need to watch it a few times before you're going to get even half of them. Though a warning, there is a lot of 'adult' content, but it's main impact is absurd not lewd .

Be warned: this review is coming from someone who had never seen the Excel Saga and someone who only watched this because it came with Crunchyroll's mystery box of animes. I personally didn't like it, but that's not to say other people will. This anime is wacky, random, over the top, and just plain weird. They break the fourth wall a lot, so the creators are aware of what they made is absolutely absurd, which is good to know. I'd be scared if they thought otherwise. So yeah, I didn't like it simply because I don't enjoy those qualities, at least not the amount found in this anime. If any of those qualities sound appealing to you, then I cannot recommend this more. It will not disappoint, as long as you like this kind of anime.

The first time I saw this was at an anime club meeting at my local library. The hosts told us this would be funny... they also said it'd be kind of dirty... I wanted to see just how dirty.
I got my answer days later when I rented this DVD, and believe it or not, the commentary was even sicker than the show itself.
Still I like sick humor, and if you can, watch all three versions. (Commentary, English and Japanese) Be warned, though: those of you that can't handle insanely fast dialog, sexual themes, weird tentacles on human characters or just plain gross humor, don't even pick this one up.
If you can though, this one's for you.

So basically I curiously came across this anime because its one of the anime that is banned in New Zealand due to its "promoting and supporting the exploitation of children and young persons for sexual purposes" (Thanks Wikipedia for that!). I do agree on that part because a few of the adult characters were a bit inappropriate towards the kids in this anime. In all serious, this anime is not for kids folks!
That bit did throw me off but what really threw off more with this anime is that, it was trying to be funny when it actually wasn't. It's probably because I'm not a big fan of Excel Saga series in which brings me headache flashbacks. Although both stories weren't great so that's probably another reason too!
The only good thing about the anime though is the sub cast and the opening song. Yes seeing a young girl singing on a beach is rather bizarre for an anime opening but I like that it was purely different and pretty upbeat. With the sub cast, Yumiko Kobayashi did a great job taking the pee out of herself with her character but same time, it would have been better if her character wasn't exactly a Excel wannabe.
This is all just my own personal opinion folks, do watch it if you are a fan of the Excel Saga series but be prepared for being uncomfortable in some of the scenes is all I can say....

Ahhh Shinichi Watanabe strikes again! Ole Nabeshin, along with his wife, brings to us Puni Puni Poemi! This is another of Watanabe's spoof shows, this time focusing in on Sailor Moon, Lesbians, and tentacles! This show has it all: Action, spastic comedy, drama (As a dear character from Excel Saga perishes) and tentacles! If you liked Excel, or just need some laughs, then Puni Puni Poemi is the choice for you. Look for it to be distributed by ADV Films shortly.

All I could say at the end was, "Wow! Just...wow." The statement on the DVD cover said it best: "If this anime doesn't offend you in some way, we haven't done our job." Although this two-episode "series" takes most of its pokes at Excel Saga (also brought to us by Watanabe-sempai), you don't have to really know anything about that series to be almost horrified at the bawdy and raucous humor of Puni Puni Poemy.
It usually takes more than a randomly-exploding, hyper-speed-talking, super-heroine-morphing, aspiring voice actress (she sucks at it, incidentally) to make my jaw hit the floor. It wasn't even the gratuitous sexual references or nudity which drove me over the cliff. Never mind the twin testicle-swinging aliens and tentacle family. No, there is more - MUCH more going on in this title than can possibly be explained within the course of a written article. Even if I could encapsulate it all, the description would still pale in comparison to the actual experience.
Seriously, prepare to be shocked at what you find yourself laughing at when watching Puni Puni Poemi. You'll never look at "conventional" humor the same way afterward.

Now hold on! I'm a HUGE fan of both Excel Saga (I own the imperfect collection) and Puni Puni Poemy (they're both made by Shinichi Watanabe AKA: NABESHIN!). But if I was to make a choice, I think I would have to pick Puni Puni Poemy over Excel Saga. Although I still think that Excel Saga is the funniest anime SERIES (Puni Puni Poemy is an OVA or OAV) there were some episodes that just weren't funny enough (the animal episode especially), and I more preferred the crude humor moments in the show (unsurprisingly Episode 26 was my favorite!). Puni Puni Poemy though (since its an OVA) ups the ante on crudeness, rudeness and (for me) humor! I laughed so loud and so many times while watching the two episodes of Puni Puni Poemy! If you thought Excel Saga was rude, this is at least 10 times worse! There is A LOT of sexual references and sexual humor (the show mostly parodies hentai!) This is quite possibly one of my favorite anime's ever!
