Survival drama takes Blue Square route
RunRabbitRun8724 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A former pro-hockey player must fend for himself after becoming stranded on a mountain

Josh Hartnett may be the George Raft of this generation, known by the roles turned down. More than ten years since he passed up opportunities to play Spiderman, Batman, and Superman, Hartnett is Eric LeMarque.

A former pro hockey player, LeMarque has struggled with retirement and is facing a drugs charge when he goes up the mountain with his snowboard. A reckless decision to take an unsupervised course during a storm leaves LeMarque stranded and exposed to the elements.

A lasting problem of 6 Below is how rote the plot is; there is not a single moment in the film that comes as a real surprise. The film's subtitle Miracle on the Mountain belies the fact that this is not to be a tragedy, and that we the audience are going through the motions of Josh Hartnett feeling cold for ninety minutes.

Director Scott Waugh makes heavy use of GoPros and drones for filming snowboarding shots, yet however he captures the shots there is rarely an inventiveness on screen. The persistent whiteness of the mountain over-saturates the eyes, and the constant choral drowns the ears.

This is a shame as Waugh uses his experience with stuntwork and directing Need For Speed to assemble a number of the set pieces with aplomb. Most notably this includes helicopter search and rescue sequences in which Sarah (Sarah Dumont) at base camp comes tantalisingly close to finding LeMarque.

There are a few points of immersion in the story, notably a moment that ignited my own greatest fears when LeMarque falls through ice. Yet as a character LeMarque doesn't confront his situation with any particular imagination. He's never forced into the horrifying self-sacrifice of Aron Ralston (James Franco) in 127 Hours, and nor does the film have the terrifying resourcefulness and consuming morbidity of Touching the Void. LeMarque suffers because he has to, in a manner often no more engaging than a rat on a sinking ship.

If the bulk of the mountainside action is taking a blue square route, this is an improvement on the flashbacks dotted throughout the film. As with the mountainside, its all filmed flatly, both visually and thematically.

The domineering father and long-suffering mother are familiar tropes, and how this relationship might evolve as LeMarque grows up isn't explored. In the drive to tell an all- American tale of redemption 6 Below also leaves out interesting tidbits, such as the real life LeMarque using his dual citizenship to represent France in the '94 Olympics.

A point of connection as LeMarque wastes away on the mountain should be mother Susan (Mira Sorvino) who clearly loves him very much, but she has come across as so soppy and one-dimensional it's hard to avoid a vague irritation with her. I was more interested by Sarah and the mountain operation, and would hope to see Dumont in expanded roles in the future.

If you're a lover of inspirational memes or fancy the idea of Josh Hartnett nibbling bits of himself, this film is for you. Otherwise 6 Below will provide you with very little sustenance.

A great (true) story on hitting bottom
fireflicker3815 October 2017
This is not a big Hollywood budget film. But there are many stories out there that don't need special effects etc. to tell a great story. I could relate to Eric's story; his childhood, his young adult life. His addiction. It was only in 'never quitting' that he continued to fight each day to live.

In those 7 days, he truly hit bottom, took stock of his life and found what mattered most. In the end he faced his inner demons and was finally at peace.

This is a great story of survival in the literal and ethereal sense. Inspirational and compelling. I was rooting for Eric, not just for his survival but for his redemption.

Don't eat the yellow snow
nogodnomasters7 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the true story of Eric LeMarque (Josh Harnett). Eric is a young man with a meth habit. He is a hockey player and it is claimed he is good enough to go pro. While snowboarding he selects the wrong path as he did in life. A whiteout happens and he gets lost, having to survive living off of bark and flashbacks. Mom decides to look for him after a few days giving us a subplot.

If you are looking for a good survival film of man against the element, building igloos and hunting wolves armed with just a snowboard, this isn't it. We see Eric mostly laying on the ground thinking about his past relationships with men, like dad and the coach. There are some faith elements in the film, the bible is quoted, but they manage to avoid the "J" word (Jesus). It wasn't Kevin Sorbo bad.

More akin to a Lifetime film than a serious thriller.

Guide: No swearing. Partial male nudity.

A slow and exasperating build up
Gordon-1116 October 2017
This film tells the story of a drug addicted man who goes to a mountain cabin to stay away from drugs. He goes snowboarding, but he soon gets lost in the mountains and have no way to get help. He has to fight for survival.

The story is built very slowly, and there are many occasions when I wonder why he does what he does in the film. I don't know snowy mountains at all, but I would have imagined that there can be better decisions and actions than he exhibits. For example, going off the designated paths is not something I would do. Reaching for the bag of drugs after falling into icy water is probably not a good idea. Snowboarding down the slopes after knowing that you are lost seem unwise as well. I don't know if it is possible to backtrack on himself, or at least go to higher grounds to check for the presence of any buildings. The weather in the first few days were good, so he could have gone upwards for help, my logic tells me. Given all these questions and plot points that defy my logic, it is hard to get into the film because I feel exasperated.

The fight for survival is not particularly engaging, as there is little to captivate viewers, and little suspense to drive the film. Though it is exhilarating to see the satisfying ending, the process to the climax does not capture me.

Love between Mother and Son conquer a mountain
dolans-112 October 2017
Amazing true story about how the love between a mother and son can help overcome the most hopeless situations. You might not believe someone could survive such a situation if it wasn't a true story. Also a reminder how drug addiction can ruin your life, but you can be redeemed.

Snowed under
Prismark103 April 2018
6 Below is based on a true story of Eric LeMarque (Josh Harnett) an ex ice hockey player, crystal meth addict who goes snowboarding and is ill prepared. He gets lost in the mountains when a blizzard approaches and has to fight for survival.

There are flashbacks to his boyhood travails and disputes with his ice hockey team. His mother figures that something is wrong and tries to get a search and rescue operation in motion.

The director has toned down the faith based elements of LeMarque's story but he has also toned down any excitement. It is flatly directed and it has little tension or energy. It certainly is no 127 Hours.

Film Lacks Emotional Punch But Still is an Inspiring Tale
larrys316 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This true survival story probably should have contained more of an emotional punch because it is a remarkable tale. However, the filmmakers here appear content on more of a slow burn approach to retelling former pro hockey player and meth addict, at the time, Eric LeMarque's 8 days of hell lost on a snowy mountainside in Winterhaven. Combined with numerous depressing flashbacks, throughout the movie, depicting LeMarque's troubled life it all added up for me as not the easiest watch.

However,as you might guess from the title it does have a poignant ending, and the clips at the film's conclusion of the real Eric LeMarque and what he has done with his life offer an inspiring message of receiving and taking advantage of a second chance in life

Movie is ridiculous!
blownwideopen30 December 2018
Obviously the "true story" this movie was based on must have been pretty dull. Otherwise, they wouldn't have found the need to fill it in with such ridiculous nonsense. I won't give spoilers but will just say that the scenes and situations depicted as part of the character's "survival" are completely unrealistic and quite likely even impossible. Also, I feel the need to point out something else ridiculous and not believable. Josh Hartnett is 40 years old ... So having his mother being portrayed by very youthful looking 51 year old Mira Sorvino is just stupid!

Gripping
nezbitkn27 April 2020
Hartnett has always been a good actor in a seemingly effortlessly way. This brings out his true skills as an actor like never before. The film isn't brilliant, but the story behind it and the story it tells is one of true human splender on how we as people never give up and always try to do the best we can. Enjoy.

Utter drivel.
barberic-695-57413531 July 2018
The whole movie is ridiculous. If you know anything about survival in extreme conditions you will know what I mean. As this movie was such a disaster I doubt you will be making another one but if you do make sure you hire a survival expert that actually knows what he / she is talking about. Apart from that, the movie is as gripping as watching grass grow on the tundra. We will not be watching this one again in the future.

Moving story of a mothers love and a son's redemption
OneAnjel25 August 2022
The phrase 6 Below means lower than; beneath. Also can mean under heaven as in hell. The reviews here run the gambit yet most seem disappointed they weren't treated to a gripping adventure full of suspense. Some go on and on about the director, the actor, and how the story could have been more engaging. But this is actually a film about a mother's love and her sons struggle to appreciate his life. It's a story about faith. The film intentionally shows only a snapshot of the ordeal he endured in order to focus on the main subject, which is that God gave him this trial to save his soul and make him a witness to teach others. Acting is decent, scenery is spectacular, I was balling my eyes out. Very touching.

Supposed to be a true story, but not enough actually true
zaniac-5957530 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm always a sucker for biographical/true story type movies. I can't say that I ever really got bored with this movie, but that's only because I watched the movie knowing nothing previously about the real life Eric LeMarque. There were some parts that definitely struck me as having been "creative liberties" taken with the script, but I remained interested in the movie particularly because I wanted to educate myself at least a little more on Eric's story. Unfortunately, far too many fake things that made me question whether any bit of the movie was at all realistic were part of the script. I'll venture a guess that the film crew's budget could have played a role in some of the many "goofs" that are not listed on this movie's "Goofs" section. Some of the goofs include (spoilers):

  • Dealing with a pack of wolves. The real Eric LeMarque got lost while at Mammoth Mountain - a very large and popular ski resort in the central Sierra Nevadas in California. There hasn't been a single wolf seen in any part of California until after the real life version of this story occurred. And what wolves are now in California are still nowhere near Mammoth Mountain at least yet.
  • The movie depicts him having stayed in a cabin in "Winterhaven", a location that is supposedly in Nevada. As far as I know, there are only two Winterhavens in the entire United States. One is on the far south end of California, right across the CA/AZ border from Yuma. The other is Winter Haven, FL. Yeah...like either of those locations has any mountains at all, let alone snow.
  • One scene depicts him falling through snow into a frozen over lake or river. As far as I know, no such event really happened to the real Eric LeMarque. However, the real Eric did walk across a flowing river, then fell into the water after losing his balance while trying to drink the river water. The river even swept him downstream toward a waterfall before he was able to make it safely to the side. Why not film this scene more accurately than have him fall into a frozen lake? I think the real life soaking he got could have been filmed to be just as exciting an experience for viewers as the completely fake frozen lake scene that was actually filmed..
  • The mountain peak that this movie depicts him having been found on is apparently a fictitious peak named Mount Widow's Peak. Hmm! I'm no Simpsons fan, but try Googling this location and you'll quickly learn that there is no such peak in California or Nevada...but there IS such a peak in the Simpsons TV series.
  • In real life, Eric's mom (Susan) did not herself go to the mountain area to search for him. Though she really did initiate concerns about him being missing, the real life Susan contacted Eric's dad, then his dad and stepmother were the ones whom went out to the mountain to notify authorities about his missing status. As much as this movie is more about drama and not as much suspense, you'd think it would have been reasonable to accurately depict these events.
  • As other reviewers already mentioned, there is only an 11yr age gap between Mira Sorvino and Josh Hartnett. Nothing against Mira, but I think they should have had somebody else play the Susan LeMarque role.
  • The movie depicts Eric as being 6'3", which was mentioned in the Ski Patrol search initiation scene. The real life Eric is 5'10".

I don't expect every biographical movie to be the most exciting movie to watch, but I do expect them to make better attempts to respect the person whom they are making the movie about by making the story and scenes as accurate as possible. I probably would have given this movie a higher rating had it not been for the completely absent attempt to tell Eric's story more accurately. But I will praise them for at least featuring the real life Eric in footage at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, this is far from the best biographical genre movie that I've watched.

Why do people always like venturing into restricted areas?
Neptune16514 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The story is inspiring & a good message but the thing that destroy this movie is the style of remembering the past & How did they track him ,if he uses FM radio as a receiver? am curious to know what drove his father out of the house? why he didn't get to the top when he was lost the 1ST DAY? Mira Sorvino is only 11 years older than Harnett...How can she be his mother in the movie?

Good survival movie but many flashbacks
robertemerald24 January 2020
6 Below's flashbacks do take a toll after about an hour in, and I'll admit I stopped watching them at that point, fast forwarding. I know that drug reform and that whole side of the story was important, but, quite frankly, this guy had advantages in life and I wasn't particularly moved. More than that, oddly, I thought it began clashing with the actual survival story, which, oddly, I was enjoying much more. In my humble opinion I think the drugs stuff should have been dealt with as a lead in to survival, not as an intrinsic part of the package. I also saw the movie Jungle (2017) last night, and that had a long lead in and some flashbacks but much briefer ones, and overall I enjoyed the timing of that movie much more. Don't get me wrong though, 6 Below is a very inspiring movie. By the end I really wanted to know what happened to the guy. Recommended. There's some good snowboarding too.

beautiful mountains, bad luck
light221 November 2017
Environment of high mountains and untouched nature is beautiful to watch. Scenes from childhood and youth have been done with a cheap blur effect. These flashbacks are very poorly done. One flashback is enough to understand the point of the story. Their dismissal with the action of the film gained some other role. They do not talk about the main character, but only breaks the monotony that occurs with long scenes in the wilderness mountains. One of the best things in the film is the choice of the actor and his work. Josh is realistic and is perfect for this role. The true story is for every respect. It's really astonishing what a man can survive.

I Should Have Liked It But I Didn't
damianphelps7 December 2021
I generally enjoy these kinds of films but 6 Below failed miserably.

It had all the necessary elements excluding a lead character that I couldn't have cared less about.

It was bland and spent too much time living in the past.

This one was not for me.

Surprisingly great visuals but aggravating "protagonist".
jmalmsten20 October 2018
I will say this. It looks surprisingly good and despite the premise that sounds a bit much like a typical bible-thumper propaganda piece the religious aspects were thankfully downplayed for the most part.

What wasn't downplayed was the utter frustration of having to see a supposedly intelligent adult doing everything he can to catch hypothermia and die in 6 below... (And no. This film has nothing in common with the films 7 Below and 8 Below...)

Ok. The title doesn't specify if the -6 is in fahrenheit or Celcius. But let's be generous and say it's Fahrenheit since it's intended for american audiences. That equals -21 degrees Celcius. I'll give the film that... even though most of the film it looks like it's closer to 0 degrees C. And yes. Freezing to death is possible even in those conditions where water barely freezes if you play your cards wrong. But it's very surviveable if you keep a level head.

In the situation we see here there are two pretty much logical options. Go upwards towards the tourist trap you came from or go downwards until you find roads and go downhill with that road. This characters decision? Randomly walk around the mountainside both downhill and uphill and be surprised that you aren't getting anywhere. Even when the character stumbles on a suspiciously flat area on the mountainside with no visible vegetation on it he just walks out on it. And to no sane persons surprise... it turns out it's a lake that's barely frozen over (further making me believe it's closer to -6C than -6F because if it was more of the latter the ice would probably be thick enough to park trucks on). And all I could think was "If you want to die so badly why not just drown right there?"

Now. Ok. I know it's supposedly based on a real event. And the protagonist probably weren't "sober" so to speak since he seems to have been having serious drug problems. But if you want to see a person go through hell to get out of a sticky situation he put himself in, then I would suggest 127 Hours with James Franco stuck in a dessert cave. He at least tries everything before resorting to the act that got that person famous for surviving. This guy? Again. It may be real. But it's not compelling to watch a person do everything he can to die in a forest when I'm supposed to think he wants to survive.

Again. The cinematography is great. I only saw the Bluray release on a rental which had the 2.76:1 ultra panavision format (like Hateful 8). Seeing this with the tripple projection system must have been quite a treat. But that does not save this film from being a chore to sit through when the main protagonist is so hell bent on not succeeding.

Insulting Warning: Spoilers
*** May contain spoilers, proceed at your own risk ***

I'm part of the 95% of the world population who is not a resident of the USA and I found this film insulting. A drug user, adrenaline junkie who chooses risk before discipline, a social derelict takes himself to the brink of death in chase of an adrenaline rush. Undoubtedly, the central character is a strong and able man, but he's also irresponsible. In every other place but pampered "America" the guy should be maggot food. Lacking basic survival equipment --a good jacket with a hood, a basic magnetic $10 compass, a disposable gas lighter or flint striker, an emergency small backpack (costing probably $10) with a modicum of survival elements like a space blanket, a few energy bars and a $20 rescue kit- plainly qualifies as stupidity. Darwin's Law applies. Being rescued by a million dollar helo, factual or not, insults the rest of the world who would never have the chance to expect that. Consequences: Fair cost to irresponsibility.

Great movie!
ognjenmilosevic26 October 2017
This is an amazing survival movie, about love, family and perseverance.

When I saw an IMDb score of 5,7, I was a bit hesitant about watching it, but this is one of those few movies where the score is completely wrong.

It's inspiring, with some great life lessons. It's about overcoming all obstacles. It's about family and love. It's about being imperfect and human. It's about life. Go see it.

Not great but compelling enough

Warning: Spoilers
It helps that I like Josh Harnett. If this were not a true film, I would be rolling my eyes. The fact that someone at his lowest point does something so incredibly stupid is challenging, but that's what addiction does. I can't imagine surviving what he did, and that alone made me pull for him. Since I didn't know his story, I was not sure he was going to make it. He had his demons, he paid for them. I can't imagine myself there, but perhaps we were all one poor decision away at some point in our life.

alanfisher200116 January 2021
Watching this in front of a fire my wife and I both agreed that we would just curl up in a hole and die. Credit to the guy for surviving, after the first couple of days I thought I bet he's now a motivional speaker. I was correct... these people never get on with life quietly. Just shows you always need your mother.

This could have been a really good B list movie...
I really wanted to enjoy this movie, but my gosh, the pace is awfully slow. I can enjoy movies without all the top notch stars and CGI effects because it's the storyline of the drama & acting that I'm observing, but this was just a good ol' snore fest. The story is one of those inspirational "finding yourself and not giving up" and I usually really like those sort of true stories but I just couldn't get into this. I remember looking up and it had finished; Couldn't really recall what had happened. It was boring, unfortunately.
