"Carentan" focuses on a single character, but his story is deeply moving

Warning: Spoilers
More often than not, war films glorify soldiers who do brave things in the face of certain death, and rightfully so. But rarely do we see even an hour devoted to those who have suffered at the hands of mental anguish and absolute fear in the face of combat. Occasionally, something will slip through the status quo, like Spielberg's own Saving Private Ryan for instance, but far too often audiences never really get deep down into the dirt with a soldier traumatized by his surroundings.

In "Carentan," the third Band of Brothers episode, we meet Private Albert Blithe, who struggles with shellshock during a particularly intense battle. The scene is shot in a very effective way. The camera tends to shake alongside gunfire and explosions; we want Blithe to pick up his gun and be a hero, but at the same time, we want to send him home so that he will be out of harm's way. Blithe's progression in "Carentan" is a fine example of proper character-oriented storytelling. In "Carentan," however, the Battle of Carentan is so expertly depicted, that it's nearly impossible not to sympathize - or at least understand - the trauma that Blithe is going through.

While the ending of this episode is factually inaccurate, the point it tries to portray should not be overlooked. Apart from Blithe's storyline, we also receive some minor progressions of major characters scattered throughout the episode's running time, including the rumors surrounding Lieutenant Speirs; this sidelining story has been dragged out to a somewhat questionable level yet still manages to be highly engaging.

"Carentan" is a slow but steady episode that benefits tremendously from Marc Warren's performance as Blithe. There are certainly better single-character episodes to be found within Band of Brothers, but this is one fine installment that shouldn't be overlooked.

Carentan

Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoilers for the third episode of Band of Brothers entitled "Carentan".

The episode picks up where Day of Days left off. The airborne company is behind enemy lines and now seeks to capture the important crossroad town of Carentan. The episode follows the perspective of Albert Blithe as he deals with his first entry into combat. Easy Company must take the town of Carentan and defend it from a counter attack.

From the beginning to the end of this episode, the focus is on combat and action. This episode is one of the most action heavy episodes. The assault on Carentan and the defense from the counter attack is impressive to watch in a miniseries. The budget and pieces in this episode are great to watch. The viewer can see mortars, Shermans, German soldiers and tanks. The action is a great component of this episode.

The episode's focus on Albert Blithe is also a positive. The mini-series finally shifts away from Richard Winters to another soldier in Easy Company. This shift makes the show follow the enlisted men more. This makes the episode more on the action and the front-lines. Albert Bltihe in this episode has to deal with shell-shock as the result of combat. With Richard Winters' help, Albert Blithe is able to recover and deal with his problem better. I enjoyed this story-line a lot as it focused on the normal enlisted man.

One fact the episode gets wrong is Albert Blithe's death. I am not sure how the show did not get the detail correct. This is the only historical flaw in this episode and I wish it was corrected.

I highly recommend the third episode of Band of Brothers.

Albert Blithe: (1923 - 1967)

Easy Company enter the strategically important town of Carentan.

This is a strong episode with some incredibly cinematic moments.

'Carentan' is a powerful story that we see from the point of view of a shell-shocked soldier. Outside of the passage of time associated with specific battles, it follows historical records quite closely, which is always commendable in films based on real events.

It contains some beautiful imagery, poignant moments, plus a number of brutal and intense combat sequences that have an impact. Whether or not the warfare feels realistic, only soldiers are qualified to comment, so I cannot give that opinion.

Unfortunately the error associated with the circumstances of the real life Albert Blithe's death slightly hangs over this episode. It makes me question a lot of little moments portraying him and wonder how much history has been manipulated to fit a specific narrative. You would think writers would avoid focussing an episode on someone who was unable to give a first hand account. Particularly as there were other veterans alive and willing to contribute at the time. Why not have it from a different perspective?

That being said, it is another very important chapter in the story of Easy Company and crucial to the memory of those who died and lived through such turbulent times. Hopefully, like other episodes of Band Of Brothers, 'Carentan' will inspire viewers to research the events depicted and learn more.

Solid episode.

Warning: Spoilers
We see what was called German revenge! Every time the German's retreated the chasing army payed a heavy price. After being hit hard of D Day Easy Company has too regroup fight threw hedge row country and take the town of Carentan. Well the division works to help a shell shock troops, injuries and losses, but E company regroups. The viewer sees in a gritty film style with sounds and actions rapped violent combat, which is a sensory over load. The narration mixed into film creates the novel experience. Easy Company is the tip of the spear, and is rewarded with another tough job. The viewers see a company come together and has to movie on. I give Carentan 8 stars.

War is hell!

This once again shows how brutal and mercyless war is and how much it affects the individual soldier!

This episode is more character centered but still has combat that is just as intense, disorienting and brutal as war can be! They are a couple of moments that are deffinetely not for the squermish!

This episode also delves deeper into how war and combat affects you as a person, mentally! The story of blithe was profound, meaningfull and of course emotional! He was this tragic person who found himself in the middle of something he wasn't prepared for! Cause how do you mentaly prepare yourself for this?

War is hell, and sometimes it forces you to do or become something you weren't prepared for!

Another amazing episode of this incredible tv show. I doubtfully think I will give any episodes with an 8 or lower, cause of how these episodes are peak. My favorite things about this episode were the Protagonist, the action, and the ending. My favorite character in this episode was Blithe. If you are looking for something to watch on either memorial day or veterans day, I would definitely recommend this mini-series to anyone. This would be my classmates, my family, my friends, my teachers, and maybe even my future kids. I wouldn't understand why someone wouldn't like this show, because it potrays everything perfectly.

The episode is named after a strategic city. The show continues to be thrilling. This time it was more chaotic -> short battle followed by "relax time".. I am curious whether the high number of jokes and jeers were really realistic..
