Jake Gyllenhaal has shocked the internet once again with his insane transformation in the Road House remake. In the upcoming film, the star will be playing the role of former UFC Middleweight fighter Elwood Dalton, who is recruited as the head bouncer of a Florida Keys Road House. Gyllenhaal’s godly ripped physique in the film needed the actor to go through an unreal workout and diet routine.

Previously, Jake Gyllenhaal has shocked audiences with his transformations in Nightcrawler and Southpaw. However, his transformation for the 2024 remake of the Patrick Swayze classic has attracted eyeballs for several reasons. The Spider-Man: Far From Home actor revealed that the process was so intense that he could not even take the risk of having a chip.

The 1986 horror comedy House, directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ethan Wiley (based on a story by Fred Dekker), has a solid cult following to this day. The 1987 standalone sequel House II: The Second Story (watch it Here), which was written and directed by Wiley (again from a story by Dekker), has a less positive reputation than its predecessor. But there are fans out there who enjoy House II even more than the first House – and I happen to be one of those fans. So I’m very happy to see that JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has decided to celebrate House II: The Second Story, which has been a favorite of mine since childhood, with a new video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! Welcome to Camp Nightmare, where we're about to embark on a wild adventure through the wacky world of campy horror movies. The moon casts an eerie glow on the haunted cabins, and the rustling leaves whisper tales of horror. Gather 'round the campfire, fellow thrill-seekers, as we invite you into the twisted world of camp. Not summer camp, but camp camp. These delectably cheesy flicks have achieved legendary status, eliciting uproarious laughter and spine-tingling cringes in equal measure.
Before we delve into the world of campy horror movies though, we should probably answer the question: What is camp? It's the B-movie that's loud and proud. The intentionally over-the-top horror movie that winks at the audience, saying, “Sure, we might be cheesy and predictable, but isn't that part of the bloody charm?” Camp is a whirlwind of blood-splattered delight, where rubber monsters and questionable dialogue collide in a gleeful explosion of entertainment.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

Despite lacking a cool older relative or friend to show me the ropes, my early exposure to the horror genre was fairly conventional. I started with the big slasher franchises then worked my way through other genre classics before seeking out increasingly obscure titles — a journey that continues to this day. After binging through Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, I soon discovered Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy.
Well before the remake or Ash vs. Evil Dead, I distinctly recall reading about unofficial Evil Dead installments on web forums to sate my appetite while waiting for the franchise’s long-gestating fourth entry. There’s the La Casa series in Italy, wherein unrelated movies were marketed as Evil Dead sequels, and Japan’s Evil Dead Trap, whose similarities to Raimi’s work begin and end with the title. But the one movie that always eluded me was The Japanese Evil Dead.

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.
While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Happy October, dear readers! The Halloween season officially kicks off today, and to get you in the spirit and help you along as you start to make your movie-viewing plans for the month, I thought I’d go ahead and scour the extensive horror offerings on Tubi to find 31 movies that should get you ready for all things All Hallows’ Eve. For this list, I went ahead and focused on movies that were either centered around the Halloween holiday, feature October 31st in some fashion, or are films that are essential watches for me every Halloween season as they give off some supremely spooky vibes. And the best thing about these movies? They’re all free to stream on Tubi, which should help with your seasonal budgets.

Hello, dear readers! Today, we’re kicking off our 2021 Indie Horror Month celebration right here on Daily Dead, and I figured the best way to get things going was to put together a list featuring a bunch of my favorite independent genre movies that you can currently stream on a variety of platforms. As someone who was fortunate to grow up enjoying all sorts of films that were released outside of the studio system, and as someone who also continues to enjoy all the indie horror contributions that come along these days, there is definitely something for every kind of horror fan included here.

Arrow Video is excited to announce the July slate of titles on their subscription-based Arrow Video Channel, including acclaimed undead comedy Zombie for Sale and Gamera: The Complete Collection, all twelve films starring mankind’s greatest defender: a fire-breathing mutant turtle.

For the first time ever, fans can trace the decades-long evolution of Gamera, from the “friend of all children” in his more light-hearted earlier films, to the Guardian of the Universe in the groundbreaking 1990s reboot series, often hailed as three of the best kaiju films ever made.

Fred Dekker, the writer and director of the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps, is planning a sequel that will bring back the original cast! That cast of the original film includes Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Allan Kayser, and Tom Atkins.
The news about Night of the Creeps 2 came from Tom Atkins during an interview with JoBlo. He said:
“I would like to see Detective Ray Cameron become resurrected somehow. And Fred Dekker and I, every time we see each other, we talk about that. And he's determined to do a sequel with the three kids and myself. I mean they're no longer kids, they're all in their 50's, but they're all still kicking and healthy and looking good. I would love to do that again. I love Detective Ray Cameron.”
It would be pretty cool if this film project actually ended up happening. I love the idea...

Welcome back for another installment of “From Streams to Screams,” everyone! It’s Monday, which is always the roughest day of the week to get through, so perhaps there are a few films on this list that might help ease that pain a bit. For today’s selection of horror movies that are currently streaming on a variety of platforms—Shudder, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu and Tubi TV—we’re taking a trip back in time to the 1970s and 1980s, which were arguably two of the greatest decades in genre storytelling.
And before anyone asks, “Where’s this movie? Where’s this other movie?,” I’ve been careful to not repeat listings in all of the different editions of “From Streams to Screams,” so this is more of a rundown of all the great ’70s and ’80s horror that I haven’t been able to mention over the...

In the early ’80s, small creatures called Mogwais forever changed the horror comedy landscape. The year was 1984 and Joe Dante’s Gremlins (written by Chris Columbus) became a smash hit for Warner Bros., bringing in over $153 million in North America alone and securing its spot as the number four highest grossing film of the year. The movie was a genre bender, opting for black comedy that lightly dipped its toes into horror waters (despite the warning to Not Get Them Wet!). These little guys were cute and cuddly (until you fed them after midnight), and were so immensely popular, they launched ginormous merchandising and marketing campaigns and spawned a cluster of knock-off movies all centered around small, weird, cutesy-gross little creatures. Ghoulies II was one of those movies.
Mostly unconnected to the original film, Ghoulies II follows the pesky little toilet monsters as they wreak havoc in an amusement park funhouse called Satan’s Den.

I know I say this every single year, but it really is hard for me to believe that we’re now less than two months away from Flashback Weekend 2018. Chicago’s longest-running convention returns to the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel Friday, August 3rd through Sunday, August 5th, and Fbw founders Mike and Mia Kerz have put together a frighteningly fun lineup that Midwest horror fans are not going to want to miss. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased Here.
For Flashback 2018, both Brad Dourif and Tom Holland are headlining this year’s convention as the co-Guests of Honor, and there will be Child’s Play and Fright Night reunions and screenings happening that weekend. Joining in on the Child’s Play festivities are Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, and Christine Elise, and to celebrate Fright Night, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Stephen Geoffreys, Jonathan Stark, and legendary...

As promised, there’s a ton of great movies coming out this week, my friends. You may have already seen The Premonition and Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood on the 5th, but if not, grab them now. I’ve always found the House series kind of funny. This week, both House and House II: The Second Story are […]

We should go ahead and rename December 12th “Arrow Video Day,” because the fine fiends over there have a ton of titles coming out this Tuesday, including Special Edition sets for The Premonition and Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood, and they’ve also put together standalone special edition Blu-rays for both House and House II: The Second Story. Severin Films is resurrecting Asylum this Tuesday, and fans can finally get their hands on the latest season of Game of Thrones, as well as a box set featuring every episode from all seven seasons.
Other notable releases for December 12th include K-Shop, Once Upon A Time at Christmas, Brackenmore, The Snake Woman, Beware the Lake, and Hollow Creek.

This past weekend I traveled up to the Northeast United States to check out Salem Horror Fest, a brand new horror festival whose mission is “to examine the themes of Fear and the American Experience within the horror genre.” With programming from September 21st–October 15th, Salem Horror Fest has featured film screenings and various live shows that examine horror in the context of significant American issues including race, gender, and sexuality. It looks to be having a hell of an inaugural year and based on my experience, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t come back again next year.
At the “Women with Guts” event on Saturday, we sat down for a screening of Friday the 13th Part VII – The New Blood (you might be aware that I’m rather fond of this film) and afterwards, I was lucky enough to sit down for a conversation with...

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

I confess that the first two parts of Phil Tippett's Mad God completely passed me by, but now that a kind reader has tipped us off to the existence of Part 3, all I can say is ... wow! Tippett has enjoyed a long career as a visual artist, receiving Academy Award nominations for Dragonslayer, Return of the Jedi, Willow, Jurassic Park, Dragonheart, and Starship Troopers, and taking the Oscar home three times. Of course, that's only the tip of the iceberg; his credits include all three original RoboCop movies, House II: The Second Story, and "demon supervisor" on The Golden Child. Tippett has been increasingly focusing his efforts on Mad God, an epic stop-motion animation project that looks absolutely fantastic, judging by the video...

Growing up, I was a big fan of both House and House II: The Second Story, so as you can imagine, Arrow Video’s recent House: Two Stories Blu-ray collection was right up my proverbial alley. Both films look better here than they did on DVD (which is how I’ve been viewing them for years now), the new retrospective featurettes do a great job of diving deep into both movies, and the other supplemental materials included are a welcome blast from the past. For fans who are on the fence about adding House: Two Stories to your home media collections, I can emphatically say this set is well worth the investment.
In House (1986), we meet famed writer Roger Cobb (William Katt), a Vietnam vet with a slumping career and a marriage that has hit the skids after his son disappeared while visiting Roger’s aunt Elizabeth in her gothic abode one fateful day.

What is it? A professional woman and her oddball father dance around their complicated relationship, both in and out of costumes.
Why buy it? Family dysfunction is a longtime staple in cinema, but no film this year captured it with such humor, warmth, and wisdom as Maren Ade’s third feature. Even at 162 minutes our time with Ines and her oddball father feels far too short as their journey of discovery becomes one we don’t want to see end. One of House II: The Second Story’s taglines was “It’s getting weirder!”, although if you caught Steve Miner’s original film expectations should have been high that House II would be as frenetic and chaotic. But Ethan Wiley’s sequel does nothing with the first film, instead branching off of the notion that old houses have crazy secrets and running with it into western sub-genre terrain. Because House already paved the way for Wiley do off-the-wall shit, House II takes things even further – both with the zany storyline and with the comedy, which was always apparent in the first film but much bleaker than the slapstick here.
The Second Story starts with a rainy night, with a couple trying to get their child out of a house before a cowboy-hat wearing zombie shoots them up. And then it jumps years into the future, when Jesse (Arye Gross) finally...

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.
