Futurama: How the West Was 1010001 (2023)
Season 11, Episode 3
7/10
On par with the later seasons
20 September 2023
Is it great? No. Is it bad? No. It's about the same level as the early 2010 seasons. Honestly I'm just so glad that there is more Futurama that I'm happy with anything we're getting at all! I'm excited to see a new era of my favorite show.

How the West was 1010001: I've always enjoyed the episodes that find ways to bring the characters into different genres, and as an avid RDR2 fan this was no exception. The reason Futurama is my favorite show is because I never fail to laugh out loud at least once every episode, and I got two of those in this one, even if just chuckles. I did feel personally attacked by the Apple Maps joke tho lmao.

Doesn't go anywhere or offer any resolution
13 November 2020
Obviously some powerful performances and very real emotion involved, but overall just a lot of material with no real anchor or takeaway. It's like a painful clip out of real life with no narrative direction. Felt aimless and bleak.

A light-hearted drama to restore faith in humanity

One of the purest representations of empathy, tolerance and acceptance of mental illness I've ever seen.

does not hold your attention
23 July 2020
Even though the beginning and first ten minutes or so are supposed to grip the viewer via action and an air of mystery all it really does is detach oneself as it descends to chaos. The first time I tried to watch this episode I actually got so bored and distracted that I turned it off, which I've never done mid-episode before. The second attempt I finished the episode and it went much better, but only because I knew that I would have to force myself to focus and concentrate manually because the story and characters weren't gravitating my interest for reasons unknown.

Pretty disappointed in the new changes thus far- especially the abstract disjointed crystal-beehive tardis console. not a fan at all.

Stressful waste of time
4 July 2020
The most grating, stressful and unenlightening film I've ever watched. There was nothing inspired or new about it. A majority of the film was a shouting match littered with cusses and disjointed conflict. No real character or story development. The score was completely and totally mismatched for this movie and more befitting to a blade-runner sequel. The visual effects were long winded and confusing and interrupted what little story pacing there was.

I kept watching hoping for some sort of redemption that would make the film worth it or live up to positive reviews that I had heard but it came up short.

Only good thing I can think to say is Sandler and ensemble did a fine job with a jumbled mess of a script and gave pretty solid performances; nothing groundbreaking.

I don't recommend watching, overall a waste of time.

Hit and miss mixed-bag

First of all this did not age well at all. Watching in 2020 and hearing his political takes were honestly sobering. Fifty percent of his set had me in stitches laughing so hard, and the other fifty percent had me wincing waiting for the bit to end. I don't think I'd recommend the whole special to my friends, but I'll definitely pick and share favorite parts in the future. Overall, it's worth a gamble if you're bored

Flagrant disregard for continuity
7 January 2020
This episode was cute and funny for a satirical period piece but becomes the first in many a string of obnoxious canon disrupting timelines of the simpsons history so carefully curated over nearly 20 years. In my personal experience, I'm fine overlooking continuity errors such as the use of new technology despite no aging of the characters; but when flashbacks happen with Homer and Marge specifically, it's so frustrating for newer episodes to completely change what we know about their history rather than supplementing it with storylines that fit what we know and accept.

Still I love Homer and Marge love story episodes, but this is one I like to pretend doesn't exist canonically speaking

It's really good... but also awful
15 October 2019
By the end of the film you love it and feel good about it but that's only if you survive the first third of it. The beginning (aside from the opening credits which are very humorous) is painful and crude and plain awful; not in film or acting but content wise. However that does depend on personal taste and humor.

It really comes together in the final act and a solid ending that is happy, tender and sweet which is unheard of with a zombie flick.

Messed me up
14 October 2019
Honestly it should be rated R- it astounds me that it is not. This film is super shocking and gritty. It's hard to watch because it feels so close to reality. Made me so uncomfortable and has honestly stayed with me since my first watch after it came out. Not for the faint of heart

Delightfully Uncomfortable
23 August 2019
In classic Hitchcock fashion this film transforms daily normalcy into edge-of-seat suspense. From the get go there is unease about the relationship between Lina and Johnnie that would have been full on objection if it weren't for Cary Grant's intoxicating charm. You can feel the magnetism that Joan Fontaine's character Lina has towards Grants Johnnie; an attraction that nearly blinds her to the glaring red flags that go up almost immediately.

Masterfully crafted to keep you guessing even when you're sure you've got the answer. Gorgeous chemistry and dark humor accompanied by pitch perfect performances. Exactly what I want to get out of Hitchcock films. Bravo.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

Shows the Beatles music for what it truly is: bigger than themselves. Their music transcends time and fame and the individuals that wrote and performed it and touches the lives and hearts of so many. The world truly is a better place for their music, something this movie proves and explores.

It's a fun and clever film that is the definition of "feel good movie", in the least patronizing way. I highly recommend it for all ages; Beatles fanatics and casual listeners alike. Wonderful.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

Visually stunning, storyline half baked
23 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Initially I was nervous when a fourth installment was announced because the third was a 'perfect ending', but because the third was so amazing I decided to trust that this one would be great as well; but I was disappointed.

I think the true problem lays with the fact that there is about three different half baked storylines in the film rather than one comprehensive one. It's unclear what the through line is and what the main takeaway is even supposed to be.

Personally my biggest problem is that Woody ultimately makes a decision that is so contrary to the character established over the lengthy franchise. It seriously doesn't make sense. For someone whose fierce loyalty has always been his toy family and his kid to just leave that for no apparent strong reason?

The only way that this decision would have remotely made sense and fit with one of the attempts of a takeaway of 'the most noble thing a toy can do is be there for a kid in need' is if Woody would have left Bonnie and the gang for a kid who needed him more. It feels a much more logical route to have gone and would have remained true to Woody's modus operandi.

But finally I must say: the animation was phenomenal. Absolutely gorgeous and intuitive and consuming. Every texture, light, and interaction between toys and objects is so mesmerizing. Animation is by far the crowning jewel of this feature.

This episode was so promising and was going so so well with some v important progression and character development. But then they ruined it bc Jane made the absolute wrong decision that makes zero sense and I am absolutely distraught and sick of this.

IF ITS NOT GREG AND REBECCA MAY THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT SWALLOW ME WHOLE
1 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Also White Josh is my very very favorite and I am so immensely pleased he got to lead such a great song. And what a magnificent Weird Al cameo reprising one of my favorite underrated songs in season 1. Something that was amiss about this episode was Paula's side story kind of petered off with no real resolution which felt more like a cop out rather than an intentional move. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that they may pick it back up and finish that thought but I'm not that invested in it anyway. Paula peak of the episode was the montage of her disliking Greg. Also the impressive tap dancing.

So glad that Greg's 'date' ended up being true to character bc I was getting real worried for a moment. and what a perfect final shot.

celebrating everyday life
7 February 2019
This movie is the most wonderful and tender and holds a special place in my heart. However I just want to say that the voice casting for the English Toshio does not fit at all and is massively disappointing. Doesn't match the character. Other than that this movie is so precious. but because of aforementioned reason I recommend the original dub w subtitles.

Why can't there ever be anything good and pure in the world for at least five minutes. Greg and Rebecca need to be together and stay together and openly communicate their feelings and none of this nonsense would have happened. This is the worst episode of ever.

a masterpiece that stressed me tf out
2 October 2018
This film was super well done, but it gave me so much anxiety. Which is intended in this genre, but I feel like it was beyond so.

Most of my criticism doesn't have to do with this movie specifically, but in the zombie movie genre as a whole. For example; a pet peeve that is used in this movie is the speed of the zombies and the high turnover time of the infected. It's just straight not fair.

Anyway. It's a great movie. I just got a stress headache from anxiety watching it. 👍🏻

bladerunner 2049 meets twilight zone
23 September 2018
Absolutely magnificent. However my opinion may be biased because I worship the ground Emma Stone walks on. This appealed to me on several levels though. At first I liked it because it made me feel like I was smart and into 'real' cinema for watching it. It's cryptic and mysterious and it felt like I was reading Bradbury. It appeals to my 1960's sci fi vibe while combining several other elements usually kept separate; and they got it to work. And work well. I highly recommend it.
