Platoon (1986)
Poor dialogue, and acting is a blemish on a good idea
While the movie itself is an ok watch, it's pretty obvious that Oliver Stone wants to say too much about Vietnam in too short of a time. He tries to cram in the horrors of war, the unfairness of a draft, and drugs, without really giving a realistic view of it.
In the movie, we get to follow Chris Taylor a naive young boy who wishes to prove himself and be one with the people despite having a privileged upbringing. Chris is rapidly displaying behaviors that take a long time to manifest, the psychology is just not there and is not realistic, while trying to show the mind of man Oliver Stone leaps forward to the action rather than taking some time to show a change in the character. The dialogue is simplistic and unrealistic. Again it's just a means to get to the action and the finale of the movie.
In essence, it just feels rushed, this should have been 4-6 episodes of a series, rather than a movie. The acting is over the top of most characters and since I know them to be good actors I assume it's the directing.
I think the movie is fine to watch, I think some people can get something from it, and the moral of the movie is fine. It's just nowhere close to Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now which are in their own way both disturbing and thought-provoking.
I give it a 6, because it's for me around 6.7, but a 7 is too generous.
Willem Dafoe is the only saving grace.
Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer (2023)
A moment with Dave Chappelle
This special is made for people who want to be Dave Chappelle's friend, it's a slow-paced monologue dealing with his own experiences and situations. While he is an excellent storyteller, it's not funny or engaging as the material is drawn out way too long.
I'm not a person who has heroes or looks up to people, but I think this special is made for those who like the concept of Dave Chappelle and want to spend time with him.
This special is a reminiscence of something one would find a good host at a party doing.
So the act itself is Dave Chappelle but much more tired and expected, there are of course some shock value in the act, however, it's something we know will come and the entire audience knows what is coming.
I recommend this special to those who are fans of Dave Chappelle, but if you're looking for a fun stand up you can probably find better.
Solar Opposites: The Ping Pong Table (2023)
They don't care anymore
The showrunners have completely let us down, crude jokes and boring plots gave us nothing. From being a show that delivered solid episodes of above mediocre fun it's now a chore to watch it.
This show lacks any finesse, intelligence, or interest. They replaced the voice of Corvo for obvious reasons, it didn't fit very well but was not a dealbreaker.
The sloppy writing, with lots of curse words and something that would best fit in on 4chan or Reddit, just gets boring really fast. There is nothing that redeems this season or episode, it's like they don't care anymore, and so I won't either.
The show is dead.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
I have never reviewed something
Why?!?!
Why have they done this, what is this even? I enjoy the effects like everyone else, but the plot is stupid and boring and the actors are doing their best with a horrible script. This is Star Trek, not some new Sci-FI love story. I understand that people might want something new, but this has nothing to do with the universe or the idea of the federation.
I'm want to like it, but I just can't...
