I lowered my rating for this episode because of the implausibility of Marian's showing up at Peggy's house to deliver used shoes. That segment of the episode was bizarre. It seemed like a complete contrivance to underscore the lack of understanding of upper-class whites regarding the Negro culture of the times.

Nasty Undercurrents

Warning: Spoilers
There's a lot to process here. The obviously conniving Turner hops into bed with Russell. He rejects her but the die is cast for the future. There is an uncomfortable scene at the secretary's family's house through some really bad judgment and preconceptions. A little dog gets lost and this leads to a degree of pomposity (You'll have to watch). There are efforts to get the Russells to pull some punches. Mr. Rake continues his efforts at courtship. And the much maligned Mrs. Chamberlain is becomes a more significant figure.
Marian's Boots lol

Warning: Spoilers
New York Globe editor T. Thomas Fortune, who is a real historical figure as well, takes an interest in Peggy's story and decides to publish it. Marian secretly befriends the mysterious Mrs. Chamberlain. Mrs. Fanes, afraid to end up like the Morris family, decides to help Bertha. Another shocking scene involves the cunning lady's maid Turner getting naked.
Honestly I would've rated this episode a little higher if not for Marian's storylines. I don't know if it's the writing or her acting, but her character sometimes feels so forced. And what's up with her bringing those old shoes?? It felt like an unnatural thing to do and it felt so random lmao.

AN OLD SHOE

WHAT WOULD THE PURPOSE OF HOLDING ON TO SOMETHING OLD? WHY, TO GIVE TO THE LESS FORTUNATE, OF COURSE. ONE WOULD PRESUME THAT SUCH CHARITY IS THE PLIGHT OF THOSE IN HIGH SOCIETY. WE COULD EASILY LOOK DOWN OUR NOSES AT THEIR MISERY OF BEING LOWLY CASTED, BUT IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT. IT IS SIMPLY THE WAY THINGS OUGHT TO BE. SUCH PRIVILEGE IS THE PRICE OF AN OLD SHOE. FINDING A WAY TO FEED THE REST OF SOCIETY OUR HAND-ME-DOWNS IS A SHARED VALUE WITH SUCH COMMON PEOPLE. YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE THAT THERE'S A SUBTLE CONNECTION.
