Incredibly real, lived-in performances. There are facial expressions in here that I have not seen in a movie before. There's a kind of caged, emotional ferocity that can be hard to decipher on each of the main performers faces, and the need to read them and wonder about them makes the viewer an active participant in the drama. There are faces in here that cannot be contrived by a performance. The director was able to work with these performers to create real life. This is the highest accomplishment of cinema.
Narratively, it is plotted in tiny details that are keenly observed from real life, but that are enormous in their emotional impact.
This movie runs on a tonal and subtextual wavelength that if you don't catch, may not carry you, but if it does, it will resonate.
I understand that it may not be for everyone, but I don't understand people thinking it's bad. It is executed with real care and artistry, especially for its scope.
That someone could create such real life, such real, and difficult, and scary life, with actual history and real uncertainty, and especially for it to be done in such a small space with nearly no crew is staggering is an absolute marvel.
