Troll Detective
Near-L25 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*

The whole season makes you think there's a huge pedo ring conspiracy when in reality it was an accident by a suffering mother who missed her child, and it was such a very well executed prank, making all those characters seem extremely vile and evil when they weren't. In another review someone wrote this to Nic "the world is not that pretty, you wrote the wrong ending, you should've sticked to reality, and the reality is that people are worse, people are unimaginably evil, and I thought you knew this" Nic DOES know that, but his message here was that although that awful reality exists, the one that happens this season also do. Even the season 1 eastern egg was to show both the evil reality of season 1 mixed with the paranoia from this one. Probably one of the most drastic changes in direction from what it seemed to be to what it actually was. Even the soundtrack was trolling giving the ominous feeling something bad was going to happen but it was all in our minds. I understand people who disliked it and found it boring, but it was extremely well executed and acted. One thing i couldn't understand tho was the dead uncle and how much was he telling the truth and how much he was scamming the detectives for money.

Warning: Spoilers
I know some things were put on a plate and there were loads of red herrings. But compared to the performances and music and cinematography and writing and plot and everything else it just seems irrelevant, I'd like to have scene Hoyt be more menacing and have more involvement rather then just be some wealthy drunk guy but all my worries were cast aside when I saw the connection between Roland and Wayne, the scene where they transition through timelines in the car was breathtaking and the final scene where the 'nam side of him was still searching for himself (and Julie) harrowing and gorgeous... like life. Mahershala Ali proves himself to be (and this is a bold statement) one of the greats... good work Nic Pizzolato... have a good rest and come back with a bang.

Very solid ending to a GREAT Season 3
ukigodjevac26 February 2019
I know that many of you, including me thought that we'll see something spectacular in the last episode, that we'll see something unpredictable...But when I thought once again about entire Season and last episode that I watched yesterday, I realised that any twist or something would be too much, because at the end of the day this was probably the most reasonable ending. And if you watched all 8 episodes you could see that the accent wasn't on the case and mystery itself, but on people's lives and their relationships. So with that said, this was perfect ending to a great season. And True Detective is back on track once again after awful Season 2.

Warning: Spoilers
I was reminded of a pastime. The reason why I love this show so much. The suspenseful, disturbing noises, the razor sharp dialogue and most of all the characters. True Detective Season 3 was a slow burn from start to finish that made me use every creative part of my brain to piece together.

My biggest problem with Season 2 that Season 3 reinforced was the emphasis on the case. It reminded me of Season 1 when all the pain, all the mistakes, the mental exhaustion all came back to the case.

The ending was superb, it was realistic, well written and left me content. Cop shows are not about high speed chases, unnecessary action scenes and over the top violence. It's about true police work, piecing together a puzzle that solves a mystery.

True Detective Season 3 embodied everything I hoped for and more. I will wait for Nic Pizzolatto to once again go back to the drawing board however take your time Nic, let it come organically, because I'll wait 4 more years if it means another case that "unearths the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law."

Can someone help me? Why did they show a glimpse of a bicycle jus 2 seconds before the screen faded after the end credits in this final episode.

Warning: Spoilers
The series concluded very well.

I loved the performances of Ali n Dorff.

The entire third season is mesmerizing, haunting n poignant. Since this review is of the last episode n nobody wud mind the spoiler, i found similarities between the concept of this season n the movie The Tall Man and Gone Baby Gone.

Anyways, it was not a hallucination which helped the detective conclude about Mike (the boy from school).

It was the passage from Amelia's book.

So in reality, Amelia was a better investigator n Wayne did the gravest mistake of not reading her book earlier.

Admire Brett Woodard's fighting spirit in episode 4.

Woodard (Michael Greyeyes), going full Rambo style in episode 4 is awesome.

Woodard running barefoot, setting a tripwire and Claymore mine across his front door is tension filled.

The confrontation n the attitude of others towards Woodard is a harrowing ordeal for a war veteran.

Dissapointing, but that's the point
aditurcea28 February 2019
The ending of the 3rd season, as is the case in the other seasons, is a let down... and that's the point. The mistery isn't the focus of the story, the characters are. This series is not about crimes as much as it is about people that get scared by the crimes and their obsession about them. That is the spirit of True Detectives. The only thing that I didn't like about this episode is the fact that they really wanted to hammer this point home, but it isn't that bad. Better than the 2nd season, but not as brilliant as the 1st. Really worth a watch!

The mystery ends in a perfect way, whole production was extraordinary
Holt34425 February 2019
Beautiful ending, not how I excepted it to turn out but it makes perfect sense. We finally got to know the last bits and pieces of the mystery and it didn't let down. Happy ending for once after the depressing ending of season 2. The case tied up nicely, focusing on realism and something that is probably influenced by true cases and it was clever done by the creators. The whole dementia of older Purple Hays made for some great drama and interesting way to play out the ending and it was one thing I loved with it, won't spoil it though.

The overall season was some quality television, writing and the whole production was excellent, couldn't be better. It wasn't action packed, but it wasn't supposed to be lots of action, only realistic drama and mystery and it succeeded in that. The directors catched the tone and atmosphere and did an excellent job. Mahershala Ali's performance was one of the best television performances of 2018 and of 2019, realistic portrayal of a man with dementia and him portraying the same character in three time lines has to be hard as they are all very different, extraordinary work. Nic Pizzolatto created another season of superb drama and a mystery on the same scale as the first season, can't wait for the fourth season.

Not action packed, but still a beautifully endearing and poetic ending that ties up all loose ends
salle-5030825 February 2019
This season's finale isn't like the action packed atmospheric climax of the first season's, but instead opts for a more narrative reveal of the built up story arcs that have spanned out through the season. Although it wasn't flashy and jaw-dropping, the more slow paced reveal felt like a fitting ending to match the developed tones that season 3 has been building over the last 8 episodes. There was one scene in particular that built an incredibly haunting and expressive atmosphere that begged for grand revelation, yet it ended somewhat anti-climatically. Despite this, the emotional payoff of the episode certainly delivered. There were several incredibly beautiful and moving scenes that perfectly culminated relationships that we witnessed building/falling through the three different timelines. This episode doesn't go all out with flash, but still manages to finish off this wonderful narrative in fulfilling and meaningful way. A final 10/10 for this amazing season.

I really enjoyed this season.
reddawn32912 March 2019
I binged all the episodes the other day. I really enjoyed this season. I was definitely intrigued. I got nervous thinking oh no time jumps, this might be hard to follow. But I was able to follow it all. They did a great job with the guys makeup etc for time jumps. Writing this season is fantastic. This story had so many great characters. They gave them such depth & I was drawn into the story for each of them. I really liked the ending & the way they concluded the story/search. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hmmmm, It could've been much better
MoistMovies26 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Whats frustrating with this season finale and the couple episodes proceeding it. Is you can see the potential - story wise, for something much more interesting and engaging.

I thought the slow pace in the middle of the season, would then eventually ramp up to a final climax. In the style of season one. I had convinced myself they were going with the same formula again yet making it their own by focusing more on character development.

Instead it just stuck to the character focused story the entire way through.

I Cant fault the acting. It gets 3 of the 6 stars I've given. The other 3 come from cinematography and other production qualities - and the emotionally engaging themes on display - loss of self - kinship with those around you and rebirth (when considering the girl finding a new life).

But the story ultimately was left on the back burner unfortunately. And when you can clearly see 20 mins from the last 3 episodes and 40 mins from the finale could've been something entirely different to make a more compelling story, while keeping all of what i mentioned in the last paragraph still intact. Its just a shame to see the missing potential. This Season could've stood next to season one as equal. Even without linking the two together like many commenters wanted. It could've done its own thing, while still being very engaging and compelling.

Over all, the entire season is a 7 for me. And thats my generous rating. If i was being more critical in the lack of thought provoking story, it'd be a 6- 6 1/2.

Disappointing, but then good.
zainrizvi625 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In the first half-hour more or less, you get an idea of the direction the finale will go - and it will disappoint you. But the rest of the episode warms you up to it.

Spoilers:

It is not a mistake that the entire series, and the final episode is gearing you to expect a grand conspiracy to come falling down. The episode grounds you. The character played by Gadon serves as a reflection of the viewer - she is convinced something devious is happening regarding the case, and part of her wants it to be true; the same can be said about us.

The episode reminds us that the cycle of tragedy eventually ends, and (happy?) endings are possible in these dark stories - and it forces you to accept it.

Warning: Spoilers
A woman traumatized by her husband's and daughter's death starts to poison a girl, that reminds her of her own daughter, and keeps her in the cellar of her house for 10 years with everyone, including her father-like housekeeper, being silent about what's going on?

Come on... they really blew it with the last episode! I can't believe it.

I was so hoping for a connection between the cases of Season 1 and Season 3! Instead, we get this... Ouch!

S3: Driven by Ali's performance, which covers weaknesses inherent in content and approach
bob the moo2 June 2019
As previous comments will confirm, I enjoyed both of the previous seasons of this show, but at the same time never felt that the first season was this perfect masterpiece that others said, or that the second was as flawed as others would have me believe. So I approached the third season without any great feeling towards the brand, or expectation of what it would do. In common with the first season, this story unfolds over different time periods involving the same characters, and it does so with a brooding darkness that is good for tone but also reminds of the weakness that perhaps it is not all as dark and deep as it is trying to appear.

The third season did remind me of the first in this way, that it takes its time, relies of hints of darkness, and strong performances to get through. It is an imperfect season in an imperfect series in that way; the story is not as thrilling or compelling as it appears, but it is the manner of delivery that helps make it work better onscreen than it would on paper. The design, the tone, the music, and direction are all part of this but in this season I found that it was the performances that did most of the work. Ali in particular is brilliant, and across all three periods he has consistency in his character, which version informed by what we know happened, and how he has lived for so long. Dorff is just as good, although given fewer chances to show it - they are partners, but Ali is the main character of course. The story is better for how we see it impact on him and those around him.

The narrative itself is not quite as strong without this; the case itself seems slow moving and is 'resolved' reasonably straightforwardly - and with more convenience than I would have liked (although that some of it isn't "resolved" is a nice yet cruel touch). There is a 'set-piece' much like in previous seasons, but it doesn't have the technical or sustained impact that the equivalent scenes in the previous seasons had. It all still works well as a slow, steady, drama which has class and quality to spare, but it does feel like it is more style than substance, and if you took Ali's performance out of this, a lot more weakness would be immediately visible.

Poetic narrative only for personal interpretations
bla-824-49371926 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Amelia was the "True Detective" who influenced and burnt Wayne Heys. I didn't realized the weight of Amelia's character until the final scene in which they underlined Heys' "drifting" life. In many episodes Heyes needed Roland's help to carry on with his detective career and finally the guide of what He later saw on Amelia's book: so I found a big and enjoying irony in him being a soldier of recon (as they reinforce in the last scene of the season).

True Detective succeeded once more (after the Season 1) in paying a tribute to all those people that sacrifice their entire life in seeking the truth against evil.

This is poetry in screenwriting and a masterclass in acting at it best. So after seeing it just call a friend and tell him to "grab a beer or go to a game"-

A truly masterpiece
facundofr27 February 2019
If you want something like the season 1, then go an watch the S01 again, this is different, not just a poor copy of the 1, and that's what it makes the difference. The ending is just like the real life: things sometimes are simpler than we think, and all the sordid thoughts are just in our head.

Tying up the loose ends.
conca-628-18337226 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
True Detective Season 3 has been incredible from its actors to the writing.

The finale answered so many questions. Extremely sad about Wayne going to see Julie but forgot why he had gone to Greenland (don't why he didn't ask Roland coz surely he must have known he may have forgot).

Didn't like how Isobel died and most of the suspects as that meant justice couldn't be served for Will and for Julie. You could say the man with one eye not being killed or "taken in" was justice for Will but I don't think so.

Overall, it's been a great season, slow but that's what I like as it's still been intense, gripping and very mysterious. Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff, Carmen and the actor who played Wills father were incredible! Hopefully we get a Season 4 :)

Too many crybabies aren't satisfied with this awesome ending.
wileyschmitt26 February 2019
Season 3 of True Detective is by far the best season, and didn't even have to resort to many of the things that premium channels in many of their exclusive shows use to make their shows more edgy and add unnecessary shock value (like they did often in past seasons of this show).

That being said, I was expecting a different kind of conclusion too, but this ending took me by surprise and even exceeded my expectations in most regards, and the show's intention wasn't to please my assumptions about where the plot was headed, or yours for that matter. Those who can't see the brilliance in this ending have a delusion of feeling that they are entitled to what they want, and are of course kind of dumb for thinking so, especially with this being such a great ending to the best season of such a great show. A 'feel good' ending can still be a good ending folks, especially when the production team does an amazing job telling the multi tiered story and somehow tying it all together in a final episode that often had me wondering how they were ever going to be able to pull it off (even over half way through the episode 'before' the last plot twist that finalized everything).

*Side note: Though the show only briefly mentions it and not part of the actual plot as it unfolded at the end, look up 'The Franklin Coverup' (AKA 'The Conspiracy of Silence). I was really hoping that this was going to be discussed more in the show as it is something that not too many people have ever heard of, and looked as if it was going to be a major part of the plot in the final episode, but likely was mostly thrown in simply for the sake of striking interest with people and then them looking it up to see more about it. This seems to be a ploy of HBO (which is fine in my book because it needs to be known and not just swept under the rug) as it discredits and reveals a lot of the dirty secrets of the Republican party from a very questionable past, and likely still goes to some extent today and never ceased since corruption and disgusting human behavior is obviously still abundant among the political puppets who operate under the threat of blackmail. This is one that was supposed to be fully hushed and done away with, but some copies of the documentary that aired over 20 years ago on the Discovery Channel have resurfaced and can even be found on YouTube. The show was set to air until particular people urged them not to and even paid a lot of money to keep the finished product from ever being seen by the public.

This is another part of what will make this season of TD a timeless classic, and we should be grateful for whoever decided to through this tidbit of information out there for us. Yes the world and its human occupants know no limit of corruption and evil, and that's the reality of our situation here, always has been and always will, but there is also beauty and good that greatly outweighs all of that and will win mightily in the end, and this season of TD shows that to us and gives us some hope in humanity, where others simply want to throw in the towel and demand endings that are closer to how empty and hopeless they feel inside.

Too much unfinished, too many characters and plot lines, just left...
bct1-126 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The end was an anti-climax, sadly. The previous two episodes built up to lead you to believe that there was a wide, and deep paedophile problem across certain parts of America, involving some pretty scary and powerful people, and that the Purcell family were victims of this. The link to Season 1 was clever and it worked as part of this build up (showing Cohle and Hart during the interview to Wayne in the most recent timeline), but non of this materialised. Instead, it was just the obvious... The mum who was desperate for cash gave up her children to a family that was heartbroken. William's death, an accident - anyone who's watched a bunch of cop/CSI drama's should have thought of this very possibility in the first episode although very real, and still very tragic... Sadly... For me... The dad who was deceived never receives any justice in this at all, and like his wife before him, is murdered by Hoyt mercenary, ex-cop, who was so clearly bent. And the guy with the glass eye helping them, looking after little Julie... All too obvious. I suppose that as good as it was, it just didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching this last episode, but there was too much unfinished. There was no real recognition, or vindication for Wayne and Roland from the police, and they deserved this all along. The lady conducting the interview at Wayne's house, she too deserved some credit, and some knowledge of the final outcome, as if it wasn't for her, Wayne wouldn't have decided to finally finish the case. Also, I wanted to see Amelia die, or a funeral, or something to see her ending. And what of the Hoyts? Again, I wanted to see where they were now. Finally, as a slight improvement to the scene where Wayne visits Julie Purcell and her daughter, it would have been nice to have had the Ardoin guy - the father there, because, now, as an adult, he may have recognised Wayne, and could have had some sort of final say and what happened at the convent. The way that final scene played out, wasn't even bitter sweet. All in all, great season, amazing acting, amazing cast, amazing sets and a cleverly written set of timelines, but just not Season 1...

Warning: Spoilers
This whole season was slow paced borong season. Some episode were great some were just god awful boring.

So this episode we find out that the little girl was safe and now with a family is pretty satisfying ending. It could have gone a dark direction but it played put pretty mellow. If ot went like : The one eyed man could have been a bigger culprit and there qas a few shoot out then he tells the whole story right before he died. They never finds out what happened to her but wayne slowly figures it out. Finally reaches her place confronts her if that she was that little girl? She confesses and right then and there boom Wayne's dementia kicks in and he forgets why he was there. The little girl or now a mom gets another chance at life, that would have been much better.

Then Wayne's son picks him up, they are now spending time with the grand children looking at them riding their bike just like how season 1 premiered.

Just my opinion though.

Warning: Spoilers
You know, Season 1 was kinda slow, I'll admit that. But, I was immersed in its story and characters. This one had a good start, with somewhat likeable personas but, after the first episode, it REALLY slowed down. I think the story was pretty weak and the tension was virtually non-existent, except for the shooting scene i I guess. What was the deal with all this romance thrown into the viewer's face? I didn't personally care for it a few episodes in. Disappointing development all in all.

Oh, the ending also sucked.
