Relatability!
ibenimages8 December 2018
I came to watch this movie because I watched Ernest discuss his movies in Pandji's vlog. He mentioned that his recipe for making good movie is "relatability".

You have to make something relatable to life of common people.

And I think that's the strength of this move. As father of teenager in Jakarta, I can relate the problematic in growing a millenial. Also I can relate how work deadlines and schedules took away something that is most important to us: quality time with our loved ones. Although it is a cliche, but the movie then becomes real and resonate strongly in your heart.

And I always love how Ernest build dialogues in his movies. Always sound real, although you know the jokes are made up. And to have those stand up comedians appear as cameos (or supporting acts) always bring fresh humor to his movie.

Finally, another entertaining movie, with full of messages to audience - delivered in strong power of relatability.

Can't wait to see Ernest's movie again.

Great Movie for all ages of audience
hariprawirad21 January 2018
"Susah Sinyal" was family-themed movie added with the natural nuance of East Sumba. This movie depicted about Ellen (played by Adinia Wirasti), single mother who was busy with her job as a lawyer, and newly ran her legal office with her partner, so she didn't have enough time for her daughter Kiara (played by Aurora Ribero). One day between Ellen and Kiara decided to go on holiday to East Sumba for quality time, and suddenly in that area was hard to find a signal to communicate or have social networking activity. At first the relationship between Ellen and Kiara went well when they spent vacation time in Sumba. However, the conflicts arose due to Ellen had to choose her career or daughter as priority. In addition to problem between mother and daughter, this movie also showed some silly comedy scenes that made several audiences laughing. Furthermore, the beautiful scenery in East Sumba also colored this movie and opened our insight that "Sumba is Heaven". The casts of the movie were very natural and excellent to play their characters especially for the newcomer artist (Aurora Ribero ) who played Kiara, but she could play her role as the main character very well. Overall, the movie didn't emphasize on the problem of hard to find signal or no signal in accordance with the title of movie (Susah Sinyal). However the movie more highlighted the conflict between mother and her daughter where she had to defend herself as a career woman or a mother who always be there for her daughter. Nonetheless, this movie is highly recommended for you as lovers of family movies that are nuance of comedy and nature, and suitable for all ages of audience.

Yet another bland Indonesian comedy
dwireman28 January 2018
This movie is your typical play-safe Indonesian comedy with all the irritating elements you'd expect from one of these:

  • Cliche plot
  • Useless characters who do nothing but dispense jokes
  • Entire scenes that do nothing to the plot whatsoever except deliver a lame punchline

Added to all those, this movie also has:

  • Unconvincing characters
  • Bland cinematography (despite some genuinely beautiful settings)
  • Bland, monotonous score
  • Too many character arcs and subplots that felt forced and unnecessary

All in all, this movie was a waste of time (110 minutes) and is exactly like a bland bowl of reheated Meatball Soup - you know how it's gonna taste, you know there's a lot of better options but you settle for this because you lack imagination and decent taste.
