Slow-burning introduction
Leofwine_draca21 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A slow-burning first episode of this series. A little like THE TERROR, I think, and with characters that have just enough promise to make it interesting. Colin Farrell is in particular unrecognisable in his role. I just hope the pace picks up a bit from the next one. This feels like the set-up for a joke: a drunk, a drug addict and a fraudster walk onto a whaling ship...

Behold the Man
Prismark1021 September 2021
The trailers for The North Water made it look something like the 2018 series The Terror.

The first episode is set in Hull 1859 and concerns three sailors who go on a whaling expedition.

Patrick Sumner (Jack O'Connell) an Irish surgeon who claims to be involved in a complex property dispute. He is likely to be an opium addict after getting injured as a soldier in India.

Henry Drax (Colin Farrell) is a drunken violent brute of a man who is also a harpooner.

Captain Brownlee (Stephen Graham) has agreed to sink the ship for a hefty insurance payout. It means many of the men will not come out of the expedition alive.

Given the cast which also includes Tom Courtenay. This should have been a thrilling if grim opening episode.

Those seals that got clubbed to death at the end were at least spared watching the rest of this rubbish.

Too slow

A completely uninteresting and dismal pilot. Slow, too slow. For now...
