Midnight in Paris
Hitchcoc31 December 2018
Midge follows her father to Paris, hoping to get her mother (who left because she felt unappreciated) back home. Tony Shaloub is fabulous. He is a wife's worst nightmare but he is a wonderful combination of cantankerous and out to lunch. There are great scenes, especially at a restaurant they go to. Meanwhile, Susie is abducted by a couple of thugs. They are going to beat her up, but find out she is from their neighborhood and end up taking her home for dinner. So, what about the standup? Midge ends up in a bar featuring drag queens and ends up doing an impromptu act, using an American woman as a translator (since she doesn't speak French). I thought it was great.

Struggling to find it's voice for the season

Warning: Spoilers
The episode better has a as interesting story as the previous season had, not is it nearly as funny. The most adorable little dog gets introduced though and now it's my main reason for watching this. Unfortunately the dog gets hardly any screentime. I'm not sure the showrunners understand their own show and what makes it good (the dog!)

The simultaneous translation scene is hilarious...
paul-685-6645753 March 2019
I just wanted to point out one aspect: the simultaneous English to French translation scene is hilarious. I wish I knew who played the role of the interpreter. Were they inspired by Godard's "Le Mépris"? OK, I add one more: Marin Hinkle was great. Does she really speak French? Does she have an accent when speaking French? I'd love to know these.

Regarding the visa problem mentioned in the "Goofs" section, I visited Paris as a US citizen in the 1980s (before 1989) 3 times and there was no need for a visa at all.

Still Marvelous, Thank God!
glcobbold5 December 2018
"Here's the card of a psychiatrist who just moved to New York from Boston. He's done wonders for my friend Sylvia Plath".

It's always slightly nerve wracking seeing how follow up seasons are handled, but alas, here there was no need to worry. The first episode of season 2 is exceptional. All the things that made season 1 great - cinematography, music, smart dialogue - are found here in abundance. It's startlingly beautiful and witty and intelligent, yet nothing feels superfluous or overambitious.

Marin Hinkle glistens in Paris as the newly liberated Mrs. Weissman; Michael Zegen brings more emotional depth to Joel and Alex Borstein's portrayal of Susie is as genius as ever.

Watch it, then recommend it to anyone known to watch anything.

Just Beginning the Second Season and Episode is Worth it for ONE Gag (Which I recite in this comment)
markkbranson13 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
OK: I've been a fan since the first season. I got my daughter--who is in law school--hooked into it. We cheered when "Mrs. Maisel" won the Emmy's. And this fall has been hectic and so I watched episode one today. If the rest of season two is as good as this one gag, then my time and emotional commitment is worth it.

Episode One, Season Two is fast paced just like last year's shows. Simply watch the opening and you will see what I mean. Things move in a typical post-modernist fashion with time and locale jumps as Mrs. Maisel accompanies her father to retrieve her mother who has run off to Paris (if you have seen any of the previous, you will understand this plot point).

After a provocative chat with her mother on the alleys of Paris, Mrs. Maisel discovers a drag bar and ends up being drawn to the stage (the stage is clearly an addiction for her). She launches into an improv while a New York ex-pat is translating (which is marvelous to watch as Mrs. Maisel rapid fires her monologue and is translated at an equal pace).

After another post-modernist transition to last season's good bye to Joel, Mrs. Maisel decides to exit. One French patron indicates he still prefers Jerry Leiws (and I appreciate this nod to French preference), but the line that is worth everything is when Mrs. Maisel's translator hurrries to her, handing her a piece of paper with the number of a psychiatrist. The New York ex-pat then says that this doctor has done wonders for a friend of hers, Sylvia Plath.

I laughed, guffawed, and nearly fell from my chair with this delivery! If you know Sylvia Plath, you should enjoy this line. If you don't know her, read about her. This bit is worth it all and speaks, also, to the quality of the writing of this show.

If you have NOT seen "Mrs. Maisel," you must. If ro no other reason, you need to observe and then reflect on why Mrs. Maisel names HERSELF "Mrs. Maisel." This little bit (also in Season 2, Episode 1) does more than capture the character; it holds a mirror to us today--in a post "#METOO" world--and challenges us to think about this same question.

Enjoy!

Unexpectedly Boring
JMaddocks965 January 2019
It felt like years ago when I finished watching season 1 but it was still in my mind.

When I clicked 'watch' on season 2 episode 1 I was unpleasantly surprised.

I remember this show being joyous and funny and dramatic, however, you'll find that the start of season 2 begins boring, slow, bleak, and random.

I hope the season does pick up, if not, I'm not sure how much longer I will last.

A flop
javajan-584567 December 2018
Season 1 was so funny and interesting that I expected more of the same. Unfortunately, there was nothing funny, clever, or different about this episode. Perhaps there is nowhere to go but down after such a marvelous season 1. Any more clinkers and I'll stop watching.

"how much of a cliché can it get" must have been the question in the writing room...
nakrugt19 October 2020
The declining quality of the first season resumes as the most stereotypical depiction of Paris at the time and 50s US everyday life... as long as you have money, everything is pinkish perfection...
