Nice story ,, wouldn't say a perfect family movie but it was somewhat enjoyable
Aktham_Tashtush2 December 2018
Not the worst dog story i'v watched ,, i mean to be honest i watched it because i like Vanessa Hudgens (side note, i wish they didn't cancel her show , Powerless ) ,, anyway ,, the movie has a nice heartwarming, Awh moment story ,, especially at the end ... I was not hilarious but it has some funny bits ,, i mean the bloopers in the credits were funny too ;)

cast wise ,, the cast were all known to me "comedy field" and they all were funny in their own way from Hudgens to Rob Corddry, Adam Pally, Ryan Hansen and Thomas Lennon ,,

So to wrap it up,, the movie was okay ,, and it is actually a nice family movie ,, so i'd say recommended.

Must love dogs
abcvision13 August 2018
People are people. They seek but often are in conflict to find the perfect relationship. That's where dogs come in, they give their owners unconditional affection. In this movie you discover the situation of these broken individuals who are missing the attention they crave. The dogs help bridge the gap in seeking love, friendship, and companionship. This is the ideal date movie or a feel good story. Watch it and you are reaffirmed of the fact that man's best friends are always there with a wagging tale and caring heart regardless of is going on in the world.

Cute Movie
Lorrie21714 August 2018
I took my preteen granddaughters (who love dogs) to this movie. I thought it would probably turn out to be a lame silly movie but I actually liked it. It was a cute, funny and sweet movie. It was also so refreshing to watch a movie that didn't involve listening to profanity every three seconds. My girls and I loved it and we talked for about an hour afterward about the cute Chihuahua with the helmet!

Predictable but charming
bastos9 September 2020
This is the perfect example of how predictable and devoid of ideas Hollywood has become. It just regurgitates the same movies over and over again. But this is also a perfectly harmless movie with some charming performances and likable characters, so I'm a bit torn, hence the 6.

It's What You Think It Is
chron13 April 2019
This is about as formulaic as you can get. There's nothing new here, but if you like cute animals, and don't mind a thin plot, you will enjoy this movie. The acting is good enough. The direction is pretty stock.

I personally look for a little more substance in my movies, so it wasn't for me.

A heartwarming celebration to our canine friends!
palepalmito8 August 2018
I was not excited to watch this movie. However, thanks to moviepass, why not? And I am very glad I did.

The movie has 4 plots. A very energetic dog that's driving a family about to welcome babies crazy, an abandoned puppy that was found by a barista, an old man and his overweight pug and a TV host with her depressed dog after a breakup. The transitions are smooth and it does not feel overwhelming to follow all characters.

The plots are basic and not pretentious. Young kids can understand and older, jaded viewers will not be bored. The movie also puts adopting pets is such a good light that the only "risk" is leaving the theater wanting to adopt a four legged companion.

Dog Days is perfect for dog lovers and/or people who are looking for a light hearted comedy. This is absolutely not meant to be intellectual or a gag comedy.

Feel good movie
bahallu10 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit I had quite a few chuckles during this movie. However the part I disliked immensely was the adoption part near the end. There is no way you are going to find a French Bulldog up for adoption. Whenever I go to the pound which is fairly often, it's full of pitbulls and other undesirable dogs unfortunately. The movie is cute and pretty funny but as far as dogs go.....unrealistic.

I really liked it. The acting was sincere and I enjoyed the ad libbing. Yes the plots are predictable but didn't seem forced.

These Are The Days Of Our Dogs!
rgkarim9 August 2018
Man's best friend is always the subject of at least one movie of the year. These films are often filled to the brim with emotion, many of which are capable of making you shed a tear (let's not go down Marley & Me). Yet despite the potential heart break, I and many others are hitting the theaters to scope out if the pooches got the power to entertain. Robbie K is back again and here to share his thoughts on the latest films in hopes of helping you with your viewing choices. So, let's get started, as I review:

Movie: Dog Days (2018) Director: Ken Marino Writers: Elissa Matsueda (screenplay by), Erica Oyama (screenplay by) Stars: Nina Dobrev, Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wolfhard

LIKES:

Cute/Adorable: A movie about dogs often has the factor that melts our heart and Dog Days is no exception. The numerous relationships between man and dog are incredibly sweet, a family atmosphere that will thoroughly make fans of many ages smile. You'll get a wonderful sense of pet ownership as the tales interconnect, and plenty of furry faces to make your cheeks hurt from smiling.

Good Pace: The movie trailer suggest a film that was going to drag in its ridiculous, multi-tale way. Surprisingly, the movie achieves a presentation speed that will keep most people's attention and get you out of there feeling like you haven't lost 4 years of your life. Again, it helps that the puppies are in a majority of the shots, but the brisk pace cuts out the drab and leaves more for fab.

All Characters Used: A star studded cast often suffers from skewed use of characters. Happily, I can announce that Dog Days achieves the balance that many strive for, keeping both animal and human members integrated in a rather even time interval. Well done guys, well done.

Good Chemistry: The relationship between pet and owner is sacred on many levels, and to capture that relationship in the acting is a challenge that is difficult to obtain. Fortunately, our cast was up to the challenge, and managed to solidly execute the acting they wanted. While not Oscar worth, the humans do a great job interacting with each other, bringing believable relationships to the silver screen. Throwing the dogs in there, the magic only further explodes as the personalities of each group unfold, and begin reshaping into something grander as world's collide.

Good Dialogue: What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good script for the actor's to bring to life. Dog Days may not have the most memorable quotes, meme worthy t-shirt jargon, or even those scenes that will go down in history. However, much of the dialogue feels like it was grounded in reality, with our character spouting words that feel like normal conversation. It fits well with the theme of the movie, brings a nice freshness into the Hollywood style, and further creates likeable characters that don't feel as fake. Plus, the good themed morals and heartfelt lessons are not diluted by a grandiose speech.

The Dogs: Of course, this is my favorite aspect, the four-legged wonders are the heart and soul of the movie. The animal cast hold the personality of most of the shots, come trained with some impressive moods and discipline, and manage to say so much, but yet make little noise. It's all of these qualities mixed with those energetic faces that really secures your interest in the film and doesn't let go until the very end. Whoever directed the cinematography to fully utilize them, gets an A+ in my book for maximizing the full effect of the crew.

DISLIKES:

Predictable: A movie like this is going to rely on the straight and narrow so that they can secure a wide age group. The movie drops so many clues messily, you can surely be prepared for what is to come and see it coming a mile away. I had hoped to be wrong for multiple reasons, but only one clue managed to lead me astray, the rest painted arrow signs to the story. Perhaps it is to get you prepped for the deeper moments, but a little more surprise would have been nice.

Editing: The movie is nearly 2 hours long, and while I love seeing cute puppies for so long, the tale didn't need to be that long. We had at least 20 minutes that could have been directed to different areas, or just cutting it out altogether. A minor dislike indeed, but still, utilize your editing crew a little better.

Silly moments: The realism is fine, and some of the laughs are cute gimmicks, there are times where the realism is shattered for ridiculous gimmicks. It's a little something for everyone, but at least one sequence in particular was a little overdone. In addition, some of the running jokes should have stopped sooner rather than later. Still, these moments will crack people up, and get those squeals of delight from the younger crowd.

The Stories: While they achieved the goal of integration, and managed to sew in some inspirational, emotional moments, the story of this film did suffer from what felt incomplete. Oh, sure they had a nice wrapped up ending, but like many of the cross-tale films, so much sustenance is left out. Some tales more than others, Dog Days multiple subplots feel like they are bare boned short stories that managed to get tied in hastily. Cute as they can be, I like a little more depth to the tales, and perhaps decreasing the number of stories was the way to go.

The VERDICT: Overall Dog Days turned out better than I anticipated. It's a good family movie, where dogs rule and the people don't do bad too. This cute, cuddly, moral infused project is really good for a variety of age groups, and will probably pull at the heartstrings as most dogs do. Given all the fun though, there are some editing and story development areas that still require tweaking primarily to help mature the story into a major hit, and perhaps drop some of the predictability. While I did enjoy the theater presentation, I don't feel this movie was needed to be seen in the big screen, but if looking for a good family film, check this out, because it was supported by MoviePass.

My scores:

Comedy/Drama: 7.0 Movie Overall: 5.5

Predictable, light fare, but that is fine if all you want is a mindless, easy-going film. If you want a different, challenging and/or original film, skip this film.

Dog Days were, surprisingly, not bad. If you love dogs, it was a decent movie to watch to just relax and enjoy. The performances were good, the story had a feel good vibe and the dogs were cute.

The Vidiot Reviews...

Dog Days

The dog days of summer are when the droughts get so bad people start drinking out of toilets.

However, this canine comedy contends that the meaning pertains more to listlessness.

Elizabeth (Nina Dobrev) is a morning show host who must learn to work with her new co-host; Tara (Vanessa Hudgens) is crushing on an arrogant vet while a nice guy pines for her; and a married couple (Eva Longoria, Rob Corddry) struggles to make life for their adopted daughter comfortable. Over time each of these tales intersects with one another to create a larger chronicle of modern relationships and urban dog ownership.

While none of the interconnected stories are all that earthshattering or funny for that matter, the canine companions do offer a slight reprieve from the corny, sentimentality of the unmemorable vignettes.

And while dogs can offer sound dating advise; they tend to favor the suitors with musty crotches. Red Light

Schmaltzy, Predictable, Wonderful
jgeorge410 August 2018
Yeah, it's about as schmaltzy as a movie can get. Yeah, it's about as predictable as February snow in Minnesota. But ultimately, it's a wonderful movie and families will really enjoy this.

By far the best part of this is Charlie the dog, and the dynamic between Dax, his pregnant sister, and his brother-in-law. Dax's flippant stoner vibe may have saved the movie from completely drowning in estrogen and banality.

If the schmaltziness becomes simply too much, just let it go and focus on the dogs (I like dogs). 8/10 stars and a great family movie.

Laughed, cried, but most importantly related to!
snowdove-473779 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A friend of mine picked this movie out for a movie theater discount day - just something to see with no expectations and if it wasn't good no harm done - at least we get to see some dogs which we are both lovers of.

We were so pleasantly surprised by the down to earth positive feelings we both received from this movie that we kept saying I wasn't expecting that movie to be so good - didn't see that coming!

Everyday regular relatable life plots - first time parents having twins and feelings of being overwhelmed insisting on her brother to help out, adoption of a young girl for first time parents wanting to make an instant connection and bond of being a family, invisible geeky good hearted guy admiring a pretty woman who serves him coffee while the pretty woman is lusting over the handsome shallow veterinarian, independent female talk show host and her guest an injured self-confident ex-jock thrown into transition, and lonely isolating old guy that finds purpose because of a typical 16 year old boy who doesn't filter his comments. All incorporate man's best friend as an important part of their lives and families.

I especially enjoyed the dog therapist as I am a therapist and have had client's dogs in session.

My friend and I laughed, cried, and related to the different personalities of each of the dogs and the people that were made better by those relationships. Each story had bits and pieces of life that we related to and spoke to us.

We left the theater feeling better about life and the different paths it takes us on and how that is enriched by sharing this world with our furry friends and companions.

Not much bark or bite
phd_travel26 February 2019
There are a few interrelated stories connected by dogs. The problem is the stories are predictable and uninteresting. Nina Dobrev plays a high strung talk show personality who falls for a sports star turned cohost. They both have dogs. She overacts a little. Eva Longoria plays a woman adopting a girl who finds a lost dog. Her story is a little predictable. Vanessa Hudgens story is so dull. She crushes over a vet.

Give this one a miss unless you love dog movies.

Here for the Dogs
ThomasDrufke2 March 2019
It seems like every month now I'm tackling a new film about dogs or that caters to dog lovers. 'Dog Days' was a small independent film that largely went under the radar in 2018, but released to mixed reviews. It's full of cheese-ball writing, cringe worthy romances, and even mostly unearned emotional depth. If that's your thing, then by all means Dog Days will please most rom-com casuals. But even I'm not sure this film passes the Bechdel Test, as almost every scene features women talking about men, and rarely about their own lives outside of romance. Not to say there aren't some incredibly sweet moments, especially with our four-legged best friends all over the film. For me, the characters were spread far too thin for my personal preference.

Sentimental Mush

Dog Days

This was mush from start to finish, it just descended into a morass of sentimentality and we all went with it. Of course if you didn't like dogs this may have been a problem but overall it was watchable 5/10

A little too sweet, but still a good doggo
CubsandCulture24 August 2018
This is kind of the Hallmark version of Short Cuts. It has 4 interlocking comedic stories, two love and two about family. On their own the stories are pretty good, all a bit too formulaic and predictable. Together they add up to more than the sum of their parts. It's all just a little too pat and a little too sweet.

One of the things I really liked was none of the characters were unnecessary mean or cold. Even the antagonists were largely nice people. It was nice break for films like these where one story is usually overwrought melodrama. Sadly the stories don't fully integrate and the film drags a little at the end because of that.

But overall this is a charming droll comedy that has just enough freshness to be worthwhile. The director and cast keep it breezy, light and dogs are all very cute. Gertrude is the best.

Worst movie I have seen in years and it went on for almost 2 hours. I couldn't leave because I was with a friend who drove. Cheesy rom-com Bad acting by everyone No originality, seen it all before. Im an avid animal lover and not one dog pulled on my heart strings because it was so cheesy. Good thing I only paid 5$ for the show.
