..OK, so I basically went to see this movie to see how far Bengali CGI has come - and I was not disappointed. All the shots of the plane flying were quite spectacular, and in no way could you tell that it was fake. Just, in some shots, it was obvious that a red light blinking on the plane had been added later in post - it looked pretty bad. Strangely it was there only in *some* shots, and not in others. All those clouds couldn't have been easy to render - job well done, guys. Also, the fact that the runway was CGI wouldn't have been easy to tell for a layperson. The control room though, looked quite artificial - just, something about the lighting, I think - maybe some members of the audience could have guessed that the view wasn't real? ...and even some laypeople today know what a green screen is - wish they'd done this better. Anyway - still, Very Good.
As far as the acting goes, some of Rukmini's was awful, and some also strikingly good, notably where she's shouting and throwing a tantrum when she's been rejected - I really *felt* for her. Dev cannot emote at all in the cockpit scenes where he's talking all this "tech" stuff or whatever, I didn't feel scared at all. Otherwise, he's alright, in the rest of the story, he carries it in an ample fashion. The song and dance sequences were ridiculous and should have been cut out. Both Rukmini and Koel are absolute BOMBshells though - I feel they're some of the most beautiful women in the world! Lucky Dev! :)
The story - well, it was nauseating to watch Dev pick the "virtuous" girl over the other one, y'know, the Westernised, urban, decadent drunkard, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaaaaaaaah - UNTIL THE END. Then *Rukmini* tries to save someone else by showing IMMENSE character, and risking her own life - it was SO GREAT to see this!!! Bengali cinema is FINALLY coming of age! But - and this was the whole letdown of the movie - WHAT HAPPENS TO THE *OTHER* STORIES???!!! Does the jobseeker get the job? Do the little girl's parents end up.....reuniting? Do the lovers end up....making a new life for themselves or something?? (Paran B., was can assume,.... dies,...there's no story to tie up *there*) It's only *Dev's* story whose loose ends are tied up!! :( WHY TELL US THE BEGINNINGS OF ALL THOSE STORIES AT THE START IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA COMPLETE THEM AT THE END??!! If we are to believe that..the future is unwritten, there should have been a shot of all those guys walking off together into the sunset or something at the end.... and that was Not There. That was a HUGE LETDOWN!!
OK, so on the whole, a reasonably good experience, but the story/stories was incomplete. I hope there will be many more Bengali movies which use CGI extensively to tell a story in the future.
