This is the music video for "Girlfriend" from 2007, so 12 years old now and the performer of the song is Canadian starlet Avril Lavigne. Well, what can you say about her. Basically that she is Britney Spears with considerably less talent and tries to make up for it through a pseudo aggressive, pseudo-indie, darker approach to comedy that involes pictures of pink skulls on black background. Yeah well, definitely very much on the emo side you could say. I don#t like her I won't deny it. I think her voice is nothing special, her lyrics are at best pointless (like here) and at worst pseudo-pretentious when she sings about stuff like hurting herself. And while I think the chorus is slightly catchy at least, but not very much, the music video is just embarrassing. We see Lavigne in several outfits, two of them competing against each other for the same young man. Then we also see her as herself singing, but to me it just felt like a third outfit. She does not need to act to pull this off as they relied on the so over-the-top it is fun part also with how she defies the laws of physics and gravity in the last sequence and how she crashes that toilet. Oh my, was that really supposed to be goofy or funny in a clumsy kind-of way. For me, this entire project here has failure written all over it. The singing is mediocre at best, the music video offers nothign but some stupid goofing around and the lyrics are as shallow as it gets. Abit shocking to see this comes from the Malloys, who are experienced music video directors and have worked with some true class acts like Metallica. But here, the outcome is pretty horrible. Don't watch these under 4 minutes, don't listen to the song. both highly not recommended.
