It's 1972 and young Andy Klavin travels to Hollywood for a job opportunity on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. When he gets there he meets Joy, a studio employee, and is immediately taken with her.
Andy adjusts to his new job on The Tonight Show and juggles two difficult assignments: delivering a dog to the studio for a live commercial and delivering the evening's monologue to Johnny Carson.
Joy demands pay equal to her male counterpart. Andy gets invited to join the writers on a male bonding excursion which prompts Joy to mentor him so he doesn't turn out like her other male co-workers.
Andy gets invited to Fred's church but accidentally causes drama. Joy meets with a therapist about a wedding weekend incident. Andy receives news about his brother, who is serving in Vietnam.
A stalker tries to extort money from Johnny Carson and the authorities suspect Andy might be involved. Meanwhile, Andy bonds with Joy and Rasheed by smoking pot for the first time.
The 10th Anniversary Show has arrived and things don't go according to plan. Meanwhile, Andy makes a huge discovery, the writers learn about their job status and Joy learns the truth about her father.
