An important documentary exploring the interwar years and how WWI came to be understood and remembered in the British public understanding. The documentary takes a particular focus on the graves, theatre productions and other forms. Too often WWI is seen only in the light of WWI and the rise of fascism but this documentary tries to go a lot further than that.
We do though get the run up to WWI. The series also explores how public attitudes to war were shaped by WWI leading to public support for an appeasement policy. We even go on into the cold war to explore how a 1960s generation looked back to WWI through WWII. It seems public understanding of the war has evolved a great deal over the decades.
