Most Valuable Whatever (2015)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Director Errol Morris made a string of commercials for ESPN about how far some sport fanatics are willing to go. These commercials were so successful that the company asked him to make a series of short films that take a look at the more comical side of fans.
MOST VALUABLE WHATEVER takes a look at three "fans" who ended up buying some rather strange or unique items connected to sports. We first meet a woman who paid around $8,000 to have Ty Cobb's dentures. We then meet the Jets fan who paid over $800 for the Mark Sanchez butt fumble jersey. Finally we meet a Maple Leafs fan who paid over $5000 for the toilet bowl that came out of their locker room. This episode in Morris' series is certainly highly entertaining as he tries to figure out why exactly these people needed to own these items. The Jets jersey seems like a no-brainer but the other two are certainly weird to say the least. There's also a small sequence about a $10,000 piece of bubble gum.
