Funny clash between the dark character and the bright, Disney-princess take
bob the moo25 November 2014
As usual I am a step or two hundred behind the internet, so it is only recently that I found the work of Yulin Kuang and her associates. This short film sees the character of Bertha Mason, locked in her attic by Mr Rochester and singing a song about how she occupies her time. I do not know a great deal about fanfiction and fandom or whatever the proper words are, but I can appreciate a funny film which takes a character and does something clever with it. In this case we join Bertha in her attic as she sings about her day – tea, matches, looking out windows, tearing dresses – and, of course, nest.

The tone of the film is wonderfully upbeat and cheerful, and this immediately sets the humor as it flies in the face of what we actually know about the character. The song is catchy and the dialogue smart – with great delivery from Persaud in the lone role. She has very nice comic touches throughout – with the skull flirting and random "nest" getting good laughs among many other good chuckles. Her bright performance and the bright music work well together and the film is well shot in the location, giving it a good look.

I have read that you have to be a fan of Jayne Eyre to really appreciate it, and perhaps that is true, but even with my very basic awareness of the characters, I still found it clever and funny (although ironically for someone who consumes as much media as I do, the thing I didn't know till reading the description afterwards, was that the song came from the film Tangled).
