Though I continue to be underwhelmed with Zelena's term as the show's main villain, she tries. She tricks Neal and Belle, tries to have Belle killed, and seemingly has some diabolical plan for Snow's baby. However, she remains so boring. Admittedly, I'm not sure if it is because she really doesn't seem undefeatable, since we know about the whole water thing, or just because her predecessor was better. Either way, all she has to make her seem strong is Rumple being a monster on a leash she holds the chain to. Outside of that, yeah she maybe more powerful than Regina, but damn at least Regina is compelling.
Topic 1: I Know You, We Met Once Upon a Dream – Regina/ Robin
In the episode there is a split in the search for Zelena and the search for Rumplestiltskin, and while the majority of the cast look for Rumple, Regina goes for Zelena. With this venture, she bumps into Robin, who is also looking for her, Zelena, and Robin decides to join Regina, the same way he did in the Enchanted Forest, without her asking it of him. What ensues is them going to Zelena's cabin and having moments which hint at future romance as Robin flirts with her and Regina flirts back. However, with her seeing Robin's tattoo of a lion, flashbacks from when Tinkerbell tried to introduce her to her true love pop up, and the idea of Robin being that man scares her away. However, for her the episode ends with her looking longingly at what Robin has to offer. A son who can't replace Henry, but could certainly give her a son she can lay claim to without worries the mother may show up, and at the same time there is a man who could be hers, and only hers, who loves her just as much as the man who Snow inadvertently got killed.
Topic 2: Rebirth of the Dark One – Belle/ Neal
Of the group searching for Rumple, there is a split between Hook and Belle, looking through Rumple's old books in the present, and Charming and Emma, searching the woods. However, the real action happens back at Rumple's castle in the Enchanted Forest realm where Neal and Belle search his old library for a way to bring him back. While doing so, they stumble upon Beauty and the Beast character Lumière. He guides them how to revive Rumple, not explaining the costs, for you see Zelena needs Rumple for he knows how to enact the curse she needs. And with this story, alongside how we see Rumple tamed at the end of the episode, we see it is more so his knowledge she wants than him necessarily. Hence why she has kept him close.
Topic 2: You Say Goodbye, and I Say Hello – Neal/ Emma
As for the other team of Charming and Emma, their venture in the woods leads to a discovery. You see, when Neal revived his father during the missing year in the Enchanted Forest, it came at a price. One in which he was supposed to die so his father could live, however Rumple decided rather to absorb Neal in order to save him. Thus leading to everyone thinking when Neal burst into Gold's shop he was alive, when in reality he was Rumple unable to control his appearance, much less mind.
So, as a sweet send off, Emma and Neal were allowed to catch up and share their stories of almost marrying villains and Neal getting reassured Henry is happy. And though he sadly doesn't get to see his son, he at least knows that Emma continues to be a good mom and do everything she can, despite not having much in the way of help. Which makes their parting a bit bittersweet.
You see, with Rumple and Neal inhabiting the same body, but not the same mind per se, there is stuff only Rumple knows which the casts needs. Such as who is the wicked witch in their world? So Emma, in a rare moment, uses her magic to separate Rumple and Neal, effectively killing Neal but giving Rumple enough time so everyone knows who Zelena is.
But, one question is left unanswered: what is Zelena's interest in Snow's baby? The reasoning isn't noted and really I am wondering if she maybe looking to revive someone, her mother perhaps, or if another story book character may come to the show. Either way, with everyone knowing her identity now things maybe a little bit more harder for Zelena, though with Rumple in her prison and her ability to control him, maybe things aren't as against her as it seems.
