Evil Strikes from Above and Below

This is one of the few Indonesian horror movies that used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid. The villain's face is so disturbing it leaves quite an impression even after 20 years now. The story is not without plot holes and too much stating the obvious that a lot of times it gets really hilarious. However, the actors are very serious at their job. It is also worth noting that the film incorporates martial arts, particularly with the seemingly indestructible villain beating his enemies into a bloody pulp. Let me remind you that this is not Oscar-nominated material. You can expect a lot of awkward sex scenes, frantic disembowelment, eye-gouging, neck-breaking, and kinky tongue-rape. Why should you watch this film? For one thing, it is so serious it's laughable. But for late 80s Indonesia, this kind of movie was considered a hit. Plus, this is the only film where Malaysian renowned comedian, Mr Os, assumes a role as the villain. However, the reincarnated Parta is played by another actor who also happens to be a martial artist, hence the crazy fight scene. Bisikan Arwah (Whispers of the Dead) is highly recommended to those who love unnerving, awkward horror films from bygone era.
