A powerful second episode with some memorable scenes
DVD_Connoisseur28 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The second episode of Penny Dreadful takes the momentum started by the opening instalment and runs with it, taking the series in new directions.

Following the Bond link that I've covered elsewhere, there's another 007-related actor in this episode but I won't give anything away. What I can say is that Séance introduces Billy Piper's character, Brona Croft, as well as Reeve Carney's Dorian Gray. Both actors are excellent in their respective parts and add another layer to the already enjoyable proceedings.

Alex Price plays a sympathetic Creature who Frankenstein introduces to civilisation. His delight at experiencing the world again is a joy to watch.

The highlight of this episode, however, is the séance itself and, in particular, the exquisite Eva Green's performance. Just as Sigourney Weaver is delightful when possessed by Zul, so is Eva Green when inhabited by God-knows-what. Listening to Ms. Green spout the most powerful of four letter words on a few occasions whilst moving like one of the Evil Dead's Deadites is a strangely erotic experience. But perhaps that's just me.

The music this week really struck me as fantastic. It doesn't smother the action and dialogue in the manner that, say, Murray Gold's soundtracks do. No, Abel Korzeniowski's music is perfectly matched to the action on screen and is subtle but provocative.

An excellent piece of television.

Better than the first episode in almost every aspect
maxglen3 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode although very watchable definitely has it's problems and this episode isn't without sin but it takes everything from the first that showed promise and utilises it more. This episode focusses slightly more on the horror aspect, slowing the pace down slightly to answer some of the more important questions. The séance that gives this episode it's name is fantastically acted and shot and very unnerving and the twist at the end is a stroke of genius. Once again the set and costume design is marvellous to behold and the show really nails that feeling of Gothic literature brought to the screen. A strong 8 outta 10

Penny Dreadful: Seance
jackDee-5656519 March 2021
The second episode of the series continues to deliver with character interactions, gruesome kills, hypersexual encounters and fantastical acting, I actually though Dorian Gray was okay, I continue to be impressed at how engaging and interesting the myths and legends work and how the writers will deal with that part of the story

Fantastic Reliving of Classic Characters
jetkot12 September 2017
I enjoyed the conversations of Dr.Victor Frankenstein and Vanessa Ives. Especially the lines "Man does not live only in the empirical. We must seek the ephemeral, or why live?". The dialogue is beautiful and the scenes are beautifully shot. I did not particularly like Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray. But I enjoyed the introduction of Billie Piper as Brona Croft. This series is turning out to be brilliant. I am addicted

Seance episode: characters, or shall we say spirits, demons

Seance episode: characters, or shall we say spirits, demons

Im not sure what, which, spirits participated.

First, the seance said amunet the serpent. Seems as if just for some seconds until it started speaking lingala.

Second peter (or mina before?), name a mountain after me, until his death from dysentery.

Third, amunet, no amunet girl no, much older? Maybe Amun-Ra, the vampire. How fitting. Dracula is Amun-Ra. The devil, undead, eternal, everlasting, perpetual life, feeding from souls, blood, of others.

Fourth mina? Father, find me, save me.

Doubt I identified correctly any of them.

Even dorian gray is lost. But sir malcom is not.

But then, the vampire is not after Vanessa after all, but after Amunet embodied in Van. A mummy plot.

The best scene in the series? And just after, Frankenstein first born entrance. Wow Have to see them all. Wow, frankestein, van helsing, amun-ra, dracula, wolf man, Seance episode: characters, or shall we say spirits, demons

Why is this rated higher than episode one?
derekmhutchins18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The first episode had a strong narrative, fairly easy to follow, with characters with goals. This one felt like a hodgepodge of character introductions that lacked a cohesive narrative and failed to really move the story forwards. Aside from a killer twist ending (pun intended), and meeting some characters, we're pretty much right where we were at the beginning of last episode.

The séance scene was not scary. It was not shocking. It was not well acted. It was too long.
