Not your typical D&D show
johncraig-4688616 November 2023
This is definitely not your typical Actual Play show. There's no down time while people sit and do math, nor are episodes an unwieldy length. The editing is spot on, and you can tell that the choices were made deliberately and with care and attention to narrative flow.

The cast really knows how story works, so while things aren't scripted, the cast manages to stay on goal and work towards a coherent story (and if you know how improvised scenes can go, that's no small task!).

These folks have worked hard, putting in so much love and effort and it really shows! Everything from the lighting and sound choices to the multicamera shots to the characterization to the talent we see on screen... A+!

The Best Actual Play Out There
swlindberg6 December 2023
This show started as one of tbe best DnD podcasts around and made the leap to being a show with excellent production, fantastic writing, and a charming cast. I would recommend the show to anyone. They added Khary Peyton to the cast who brings a new energy with Tolo, a character that is a new take on the Tabaxi race from Dungeons and Dragons. Overall, the fact that the cast really enjoy each other's company shines through and watching the show feels like all the best parts of playing Dungeons and Dragons with your friends. Brian David Judkins is one of the most imaginative and engaging Dungeons Masters around. The show is a must watch!

Roll for Inititive
babyvett-553-9775186 December 2023
This show is everything a TTRPG game should be. GM Brian David Judkins weaves together a story of mystery and intrigue as he guides the cast thru the happenings of the ship The Cherry Wind. Second would be the strong cast. Each do a great job of bringing their characters to life. You find yourself invested completely invested in their actions. Third would be the soundtrack that accompanies the gameplay, perfectly chosen to match the mood and emotion of the situations.

If you are a TTRPG player, or if you've ever considered playing, this show will only solidify your love of the game and make you wish you could be a part of the adventure. A must watch for anyone who loves the game. A+

D&D done differently
crittersmom6 December 2023
Do you love watching actual play D&D but don't have 3-5 hours a week to invest in each episode? Do you tune out when a show becomes mechanic heavy? Do you live for the role-playing? Then this is the show for you. This show is heavily edited so that it is plot forward. The players obviously love what they do and work very well together. They have developed memorable characters that tug at your heartstrings from moment one. You will laugh, you will cry. You will cheer, you will groan. This family-friendly show is a must watch for anyone who loves D&D but only has a hour or so to watch an episode.

Such a great show and cast
cnjzmhzm3 January 2024
I'm a long time player of Dungeons and Dragons. After listening to their podcast series of campaign one, I knew when they announced this new tv show, I was going to be there each week. I have watched each episode so far, and it is just as amazing as the podcast. Brian's storytelling is fantastic, and being able to see the cast's reactions to things makes it much better than the podcast. And speaking of the cast, they are a great bunch. You can see how much fun they are having. The characters are a strange lot, but in a good way. The set and special effects add a lot to the show. In a word, this show is all I expected, and more. Outstanding!

Encounter Party is So Much Fun!
kacyauthor20 December 2023
I have been enjoying Encounter Party since sometime around season 2 of Campaign 1, and now the televised Campaign 2 is really fun to watch.

You don't have to have watched Campaign 1 to "get it", nor do you even have to know much about D&D. I knew next to nothing about the game before I started listening to the podcast.

The overarching story arc of each Campaign is full and complete, with mini-arcs that keep you drawn in. (They're not all murder mysteries, I promise!) And for the audio podcast, the little side stories between seasons are priceless.

The players are committed to their characters, their reactions both in-character and as players are genuine, because this is true improv. The humor is genuinely funny and unforced. The DM adjusts to surprise "wrenches" to his plan with aplomb. It's just good!

The only caveats I have is that 1) you have to pay attention. There's so much going on, and clues that don't come into play until later episodes, so if you want to try to figure out what's going on ahead of the characters, listen closely...or re-watch often. (I've listened to the full Campaign 1 at least 5 times.) My hubby listens while he does other stuff and then complains that he doesn't know what's going on. (He does that with a lot of shows, though...my side hustle is explaining what he missed. LOL) 2) Campaign 2 has little-to-no profanity. I don't think I've heard any at all. I believe at the request of the D&D channel. Campaign 1 has warnings about profanity and graphic descriptions of combat. If f-bombs and some pretty gruesome details aren't your thing, you may want to pass on Campaign 1. (I loved it, and felt like it's so in-the-moment that I hardly noticed it...but then, I've been a sailor AND a trucker. LOL)

Please, take this as an invitation, and listen/watch Encounter Party. You can thank me later. 😉

A Live Play Worth A Watch
smalltownvices17 January 2024
I've watched this show over and over again since they started posting the episodes on demand and whenever it's airing. I think it's so much fun. Other live plays never kept my attention. This group just feels more natural than those other ones. Yes, they are actors and I think it's pretty obvious. I don't think it takes away from the show as much as I thought it would. Currently there is 10 out of 22 episodes available. I really hope this continues into another season in some capacity. Highly recommend checking it out. I've seen all the episodes at least 7 or 8 times. Not counting the most recent episode of course.

Highly enjoyable television
katiewdwrd20 January 2024
I don't play DnD, but have been enjoying this delightful group of humans play! Lots of great storytelling, including great voices and descriptions by all the actors. Lots of great action sequences, but everything in between is great too. One of the best parts is being able to tell just how much fun everyone who made this was having! It lets the viewers in on the fun. Its rare TV nowadays that can make you laugh and cry, and still be fun even while packing a more emotional punch, but Encounter Party does it with ease. The sets and miniatures becme more and more intricate as the show continues, and the lighting is really captivating. Every time I think I have a favorite episode, I like the next even better.

Fantasy born around a table? Yes please!
dicetowertheatre24 January 2024
The team delivers an exciting story at an explosive and imaginative table. If you are looking for another table with a high caliber of creative members you really should look no further and check out Encounter Party. A show that already had a well deserved and strong following as a podcast actual play, now its been elevated with higher production and fantastic energy. Seriously watching Brian David Judkins run the table is a joy how he engages each of the star cast and players to pull out the best in an improved storyline. Each player encompasses so much of their character's heart and soul while delivering a diverse adventure with multiple story arcs. This show is a joy and should give plenty of inspiration for players as well as introduce new people to our favorite hobby.

This is a fun show!

Warning: Spoilers
Light spoilers:

I usually put my reviews on YouTube for this show, but I am proud to say it here too: this show is fun! It's quick and digestible, the actors are having a lot of fun, and as a Dungeon Master Myself, it's a treat and a learning experience to watch Brian take that role and run with it.

From murder mysteries to Shakespearean drama to Evil Cults to DUNGEONS MADE OUT OF GIANT BODIES this show has a ton to love. I highly recommend giving the first five episodes a try, that's the first arc, and it's delightful. Odds are you will stay for the rest!

I hope this show gets a season 2, because I know that I for one would be front and center for that as well.

The true spirit of D&D
robertchapin20 January 2024
This show harkens back to the days when there was just you, a bunch of buddies, some dice, and a brilliant DM - a master storyteller that weaves an adventure full of action, intrigue, comedy, and mystery, that captures the imagination. This is that show. And the players are just as amazing. If you get a chance, make sure you see the intro. These guys have been playing together for years and to see them in the studio for the first time realizing their dream is priceless. And I applaud the story the DM has crafted, which will surely be picked up in the near future for an animated series much like Vox Machina. Bravo guys!

A fun show
alisongambardella13 February 2024
My 9 year old son and I recently started watching Encounter Party together. Knowing very little about the D&D world, I was pleasantly surprised by how much we ended up loving this show and the storyline. The storytelling is absolutely fantastic and the characters bring so much warmth, passion and energy to the table. It really is just such a fun show to watch together. My sons favorite character by far is Flik!

We enjoy Encounter Party so much in fact that my son really wants to start playing D&D with his friends. I can't recommend this show enough. We will be watching every Tuesday at 9pm and you should too!

Engaging + Fun Show NOT Just for D&Ders
kevering11 February 2024
Encounter Party! Blends the intricate world of Dungeons & Dragons with compelling narrative television. This one-hour episodic adventure was brought to life by the talented team behind the hit podcast of the same name. What sets this show apart is its universal appeal; one need not be versed in D&D lore to dive into its depths. The premise is intriguing and innovative: strangers, bound by a prophetic dream predicting the doom of two among them, embark on a quest that challenges fate. This narrative backbone asks a riveting question: Can one alter destiny upon its foresight? Encounter Party! Thrives on its exceptional storytelling and character development, reminiscent of the camaraderie and dynamics seen in popular shows like Critical Role and Acquisitions Incorporated. Yet, it stands out by striking a perfect balance between deep character immersion and the sheer joy of friends navigating the unpredictable world of D&D. The production value, from the warmth of the characters to the meticulously crafted set pieces, enriches the viewing experience. This series does not just tell a story; it invites viewers into a shared understanding of adventure, camaraderie, and the timeless question of fate versus free will. It's a must-watch for anyone who appreciates innovative storytelling and immersive experiences.

Who Knew Actual Play Was So Fun To Watch!
jamie-kirkpatrick26 January 2024
While I played D&D as a kid in the 80s, I was totally unfamiliar with the term Actual Play or that it had spawned several popular (and very boring, IMHO) podcasts and YouTube channels. The beauty of Encounter Party is that it's an incredibly entertaining narrative show and one that's COMPLETELY improvised by the actors playing. Along with the intricate story created by DM Brian David Judkins, the cast hook you early with the humanity (ok, they're not all human), depth, feeling and humor with which they've instilled their characters. By episode 2, you can't stop watching and the well-structure episode cliff-hangers make it so you can't wait for the next episode. My pre-teen daughter pointed out after the latest episode, "After each episode, I have to remind myself that I didn't actually SEE any of that stuff happen." (Ahh, the power of imagination!) It really does feel like they have created something new and unique with this show. While I know there is a ton of Inside Baseball for the D&D players out there, I feel just as at home with it as a non-gamer as I did with Game of Thrones (having never read the books). And as I Google things that are mentioned on the show, I gain an even deeper appreciate for how the creators have incorporated those details, while still keeping the story accessible to a general audience. Really looking forward to future seasons!

I never thought watching people play a game would be so entertaining
kevinmmorin9 February 2024
It was one thing to listen to the Encounter Party podcast over their three seasons. As a somewhat recent DnD convert, and a storyteller myself, this show has really found a way to bring in visual elements to enhance the actors' storytelling.

However the real gem of this show is that each of the actors are deeply bought into their world and the characters they are creating. You can tell they all care immensely for not only the platform, but the stories they are creating. And to do it off the cuff? It's truly incredible.

You see "improv" and assume you could be watching people learn how to use "Yes, and...". Yet, despite the fact that each had to do some deep research in their characters' creations, they're able to move through each story with an ease as if they're doing exactly what a script told them to do. That truly is a mark of how wonderful these performers are.

Run, don't walk, to watch Encounter Party. You won't regret it.

A Must-Watch Series for Actual Play Fans and Newcomers Alike
Prof-Basha29 January 2024
If you're a fan of Actual Play, you're in for a treat with Encounter Party. But even if you're not familiar with the genre, this series is sure to win you over with its engaging content and high-energy players.

The production quality is top-notch, with each episode masterfully crafted to keep you hooked from start to finish with every single "move." There's never a dull moment. Perhaps most importantly, the enthusiasm of the players is downright palpable. They're clearly having a blast, and that energy is contagious. You can't help but have a ball along with them!

Encounter Party is a true masterpiece that hits all the right notes. It's a must-watch for anyone looking for pure entertainment and a good time.

I don't play dnd but I love this show!
jennifertyliszczak12 February 2024
I've never played dnd personally because I'm not great at all the on the spot improv. I found this show through friend recommendation and I love it! The story is soo good and I find myself trying to solve the puzzles but not nearly as fast as the characters. I'm so invested in each characters story and Brian does a great job connecting each of their personal adventures into the larger story. The story is so thoughtful while also feeling so organic and the chemistry of the cast is just so fun! I feel like they are all my friends! The actors are awesome, and each character is completely different and they all compliment each other. It is so fun to watch the personality traits of the actors influence the characters, and vice versa. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

Changed my mind
michaelryanhahn8 February 2024
I grew up seeing guys play D&D off to the side, and I thought that wasn't for me. This show changes my mind. It's so fun! It made me rethink a lot of what's possible with games. A hundred years from now, people will still be playing this, because it's a story where you can actually do it, you participate, and you don't need crazy expensive tech to play. You just need a few things and a lot of creativity, and you're good.

The show is also super well-made. The cast and the creators really know what they're doing, technically, and they know how to put on a good performance. I honestly think it'd be really cool if they ended up doing cameos in the next D&D movie.

Tired of D&D? "Encounter Party" might be your cure, too!
QCGVee2 February 2024
I've became disenchanted with D&D over the years, probably due to market saturation (read: oversaturation) and had given up finding a show that really stuck with me. As somebody in the TTRPG community, I began to stay far away from anything D&D, choosing to spend my time enjoying literally ANY OTHER system. So you can imagine how I tried to come up with excuse after excuse after a friend recommended "Encounter Party" to me... Imagine my surprise when I finally watched it (not entirely forced, but...) and I was hooked from the beginning! The players are entertaining, the characters are so unique with incredible personalities, and the story is at the forefront of the show. Also, just gonna say that, as somebody who LOVES a good puzzle solve, the E1 puzzle box scene away from the main table was WONDERFULLY done and had me completely invested from start to finish. You'll laugh, you'll cry (or at LEAST tear up), and, most of all, you'll come away caring about this scrappy band of characters as much as I have. I truly can't wait to see this story unfold!

A little bit of everything!
boustanyashley9 February 2024
If you want action, humor, adventure, and drama, this is the show for you!

Fantastic for people who love D&D and who have never played before. The cast is awesome and the story is engaging!

The GM (game master) is wonderful with setting the scene and moving the plot forward. Each player is developed and the game play and banter is entertaining!

I especially love the balance of humor and drama in the game play. The team obviously takes the game seriously, but they don't take themselves too seriously and that always makes it more fun to watch!

Highly recommend to anyone wanting to watch something worth while!

some of the best actual play out there
tonyinterdonato28 January 2024
Encounter Party was the first actual play I ever checked out and helped introduce me to the genre itself. I listened to the first two seasons of the podcast and was so thrilled when the got an actual play show. It's shot every well and it's so nice to see the gang all together. Khary is a great addition to the group as well.

Plus, this show is actually set in forgotten realms, on the sword coast, and even in Baldur's Gate! If you are a long time player and fan, you'll enjoy revisiting these familiar locals with a new group of fun characters and players. If you like D&D and actual play, I highly recommend checking this show out.

Actual Play That's Ready for Prime Time
NathanielGaas2 February 2024
"Encounter Party" is a joyful, energetic, and approachable experiment in improvisational storytelling. The world of actual play can be difficult for viewers not already initiated into the world of role playing games. Where other attempts at bringing D&D to television ask the viewer to commit to hours and hours of mechanics and meta-play, "Encounter Party" uses a focused cast and a crisp editing eye to put the story front and center in a digestible, ready-for-TV format.

If actual play is ever going to break out from the niche of Twitch.tv broadcasting and reach a wider audience, "Encounter Party" is the form it will take.

A Party Worth Encountering
bcfisch-5352030 March 2024
Encounter Party is a Dungeons & Dragons actual play show, meaning that it shows people playing D&D, but it carves a unique identity for itself within that landscape. Where most actual plays (like Critical Role, for example) are more or less documentaries of people playing RPGs geared towards communicating the experience of playing the game, this show is focused on the story being made through the game of D&D and is tightly edited to tell that story in 1 hour episodes instead of multiple hour episodes. This focus on the story instead of playing mechanics makes the show appealing to both experienced players of tabletop RPGs and people who have no knowledge of them.

And the story is well constructed, both in the prepared work of Dungeon Master Brian David Judkins and the collaborative performance between him and the players. Judkins has crafted great scenarios that continually build on each other and has ingeniously woven the characters' stories together along with great setups and payoffs. He also makes great use of physical props and models to immerse the players and audience in the world, and is able to distinctly voice the different characters encountered along the way. The editing does a great job of making coherent episodes from long play sessions.

The characters featured are shown to meet for the first time in more than one way, with the players themselves not privy to each others' characters prior to the start of the show. This gives a sense of discovery, seeing the characters react more authentically as new information comes to light. The players are united in purpose of storytelling, having great chemistry and complimentary strengths. They have crafted interesting and developed characters.

The characters featured as of season 1 are: consummate professional fighter and prominent member of a respected mercenary group Vinh (David Lee Huynh), proud and talented if somewhat abrasive sorceress Asher (Landree Fleming), young pacifist with a love of all living things Ulavina (Sarah Babe), brash but caring magical barbarian teen Tolo (Khary Peyton), thief-for-hire with a strong moral code and cheerful disposition Flik (Ned Donovan), and stoic country elf who is less talkative than the rest Dryddian (Andrew Krug).

Additional attention must go to other aspects of the production handled by people who aren't on camera. The set design, models, sound design, lighting, cinematography, and editing all come together to perfectly support what's already there. (the models and lighting in particular have impressed me)

The players and DM are able to work together to allow everyone to shine, all having great instincts as to when to back off, when to step forward, and what kind of story beat they are performing. Able to go between being tense, emotional, funny, mysterious, and wondrous, Encounter Party is a phenomenonal TV show that deserves a bigger audience and more seasons to continue crafting stories.

The only thing I can see holding it back is that its channel, Dungeons and Dragons Adventures, is currently available exclusively on two lesser-known services, Plex and Freevee. This is no fault of the show, just a barrier to entry, especially for international audiences to whom the show is entirely unavailable.

You've heard of Critical Role and D20, meet the next GREATEST DnD actual play!
fnzsys12 May 2024
Listening to campaign 1 of encounter party is one of the most engaging and dynamic storylines I've ever heard from a DnD campaign. Each of the players have a different energy that work so well dynamically together and every time I think I've figured out who's my favorite character, another one comes along with something that makes me want to say THEY are my favorite.

The plot is engaging, the combat is tense, and the DM, Brian David Judkins, is pushing players to their very limit of their ability. After an extra tense battle you can heard every player sigh with relief as they overcome yet another battle well above their weight class. Oh and since the DM allows all his rolls to be confirmed, you know there's no dice fudging happening. If you haven't checked out Encounter Party yet, what are you waiting for?? Join the party!!
