I've been saying for a while in my reviews of "Brassic" that whilst I still feel positively about the show, diminishing returns has been a factor. I'd say though that this fifth run introduces a couple of new elements that elevated it above the last couple.
With Dylan (Damien Molony) missing, the gang is told by Molito (Rachid Sabitri) that he'd rescued their friend from the MacDonaghs, so they transfer their weed business to him. Vinnie (Joseph Gilgun) begins therapy session with Fiona Frank (Camille Cottin) and starts to work through some of his issues from his childhood. Tommo (Ryan Sampson) is on a particularly low ebb when his past catches up with him.
Its hard not just to sound like I'm repeating myself in these reviews for "Brassic" but it is, largely, just more of the same. The gang get involved in a series of heists, that go wrong, but then it all works out magically in the end. There is a new element this time, in that Vinnie goes to therapy sessions with a psychiatrists played by Camille Cottin). The substance of Vinnie's recollections are shown to us with the use of puppets, it works really well, if perhaps not landing in the revelation that it appears to be heading towards - though there's always the Christmas special that is acting as the finale of this run. There's also a song for Carol, which whilst another unusual fantasy element, does finally make use of Bronagh Gallagher's musical background.
We knew that Dylan wasn't going to be in this run, oddly JJ disappears following an arrest for cocaine possession and also misses most of the season, only to be replaced in the stories by Adyan, played by Muzz Khan and a bigger role for Meena, played by Bhavna Limbachia. You wonder what's going on behind the scenes with these characters being written out. JJ especially is odd, as we'd heard ahead of time that Damien Molony was missing this time. The new cast work well though and fit into the shenanigans pretty quickly.
Again, it's nothing too revolutionary but it's another enjoyable run and I'll certainly be back at Christmas and again for season six next year.
